I hope somebody remembers this game. Does it support widescreen resolutions? I'm currently eyeing this on GOG.

Silent Storm is more down to juggling action points, not strictly turns like the new XCOM.

If I recall correct, Silent Storm later got a sequel or add-on that was way better, but never released in English.

The game is excellent, but you might also want to consider the original three X-Com games. They're currently 50% off on Steam.

I recently installed the GOG version of Silent Storm, but my PC died before I had the chance to try it. Back when I first played it, I really loved the beginning of it.

The answer to all turn-based strategy game-related questions is always: Jagged Alliance 2. It's by far the best game the genre has to offer.

Oh, it's on GOG? I might actually have to pick it up in that case. Heard it had a bug that made it not start on systems with over 2GB of ram. Remember playing a little bit of it back during release and it was pretty fun.

no, too old and clunky. Graphics are hard to accept after XCOM.

I like the old 2D graphics myself, but if you're looking for something more modern than Silent Storm is your best bet. Gorky 17 might be worth taking a look at, but it's closer to a strategy RPG.

There is nothing clunky about JA2. It holds up well today. The absolute peak of the genre, its masterpiece.

That being said, Silent Storm is miles better than the new XCOM. The environmental destruction was ahead of its time. If you're in a building, you can shoot a guy on the floor above you through the ceiling and he comes crashing through. Or blast away whole walls with grenades. What a brilliant engine.

To be fair the battle system is somehow better but the overall campaign and management parts are at least as bad.

Silent Storm is fantastic until the panzerkleins come into the campaign. After that it gets a little goofy.

yeah, I noticed robots but I don't mind them.

I also tried to play Fallout Tactics but just couldn't get into and that's strange because I replayed Fallout 1-2 last year.

Wow! Cool, I thought this was only released in Russian.

The second game had these cool walker suits that made it more like a steampunk alternative history game. Though, looking at the screenshots... This game has aged horribly.

looks much better in motion, take a look on youtube.

If I liked XCom a lot will I like Omerta City of Gangsters? Somebody answer this when the game comes out lol

I was eyeing this as well.

edit: here's gameplay

edit2: here it is in better quality

edit3: here's some combat

I'll vouch for Silent Storm; while it's a different theme altogether than X-Com, it's definitely the better, deeper game. Silent Storm was an amazing strategy game through and through. To me it was all about the the bullet ballistics, which X-Com really doesn't have. In Silent Storm, if you want to, you can try to spray through a wall or shoot someone through a wall if you wanted to try to. Not to mention that explosives really deform everything they touch, to the point where buildings and such will crumble if they take enough damage.

soooo Sentinels supports 16:9 and S2 does not :( Looks like crap without scaling and I can't find where to turn it off in Nvidia panel. Any help?

Bought x com since I thought it would be.more like ss. Severely disappointed. SS had a great system in place and setting but did get goofy. Still I loved how the enemies came after you and moved as well and there was no detection bullshit. Also, setting traps immensely satisfying.

I think they're trying to get the game on Greenlight, I think if that happens they would manage to fix issues like that...

ahahaha, no, it's not Nival trying to get the game throught Steam Greenlight. It's some publisher which doesn't even have any right to do it (JoWood afaik) doing this and Nival didn't know about this two months ago when Greenlight was launched. Source: russian industry podcast. So by supporting this on Greenlight you're supporting not the developer but some crook pub which went beyond distribution rights granted to them.

of course it's serious. If I wanted to play a strategic game with no graphics I'd play chess.

This is so backwards I even don't know where to begin. Jagged Alliance is one of the best games of all time and people make themselves a great disservice by not trying it. Its graphics are serviceable, they were never amazing to begin with, but they haven't aged all that badly either.

I would like to recommend Incubation while we're at it.

but they are not serviceable.

anyway finally got SS working with no scaling (had to switch it on GPU) so I'm off to try the game.

You are dumb, dismissing a true classic and the pinnacle of the genre like this. I feel sorry for you.

I really enjoyed Silent Storm until about the last third of the game. Without spoiling anything, they change up the squad dynamics so it becomes less about infantry combat.

I recently bought jagged alliance 2 off steam. After some issues trying to get it to run the latest unofficial patch (most guides are outdated) I noticed another problem. The instructions are not clear. My guys keep walking backwards, I spend ap to turn and don't turn where I want to be facing, I managed to trigger fast travel through luck but don't think I could do it again. Is there a reliable way to learn how to play somewhere? I'd like to play but it's a pain.

okay. I also refused to play XCOM back in 1996 because of its cartoony graphics (my friend tried to lure me in but we ended up playing C&C the whole day just because it didn't look like it was drawn by a drunk kid). Feel free to say something else about my intelligence and so on :p

fuck me, I've mistaken JA1 for JA2. JA2 looks like Fallout. So as I understand it's good...

ok, I bought it too.

SS2 is amazing judging from its tutorial which I've almost completed (currently killing the last dude) and after fixing scaling I can finally play my copy Fallout Tactics.

So I completed the first mission of Silent Storm 2 and in my opinion it's a groundbreaking game in this particular genre just because physics and relief actually matter (dropped magazines are rolling down the hill, Remo would love it). Actually a shitton of things matter - where you look, how you are positioned, in what stance you are in. I can see how XCOM can be viewed as a simplified game. But SS2 is also much, much slower (and equally enjoyable).

This team should have tackled XCOM but well, it is what it is.

It isn't the graphics that make it hard for me to replay JA2, it is the interface.

Silent Storm is pretty good until the VTs with lasers come along and throw balance out the window.

I'm playing through all three games now (XCOM by Firaxis, JA2 and SS2, also Hunters HD on iPad) and it's very interesting to compare them. SS2 feels like it has the deepest combat - tons of stances and options of movement, well developed physics engine, 6 fire modes, relief and due to that it's the slowest one of the three. I can't say anything about base management yet.

JA2 feels like fast paced Fallout with party. I don't know why people think that it's THE BEST TBS EVAH because it has less tactical options and freedom than SS2. But I can already say that its strategic layer promises to be the best amongst three.

XCOM feels like it's the middle ground - it's fast paced as JA2 but due to destructability and 3D engine offers more strategic option than JA2 but not as many as SS2. As I understand there is quite limited destructability in JA2 if there is any. As for AI all three games provide enjoyable experience in this department but I must play more to compare it (and it's hard to compare them because tools availavle for AI differ too much).

All three games are very good. Any HD mods for JA2?
