[Eurogamer\DF] Orbis Unmasked: what to expect from the next-gen PlayStation.

A few guesses just based on games we've seen so far:

1313
Watch Dogs
MGS GZ/PP/V

A lot of big Sony dev teams have been quiet for quite a while but who knows what will be at launch and what will be the second wave.

I truly hope MGS5 is on the next generation consoles, as opposed to the PS3/360. It would seem a massive waste in graphical potential otherwise.

Don't delude yourself into thinking that there are magical devices that can make up for such a power difference. There can be optimizations that increase efficiency and separate modules which are intended to be used to offload certain tasks but raw performance is still a fundamental metric and 1.8tf vs 1.2tf means that there is a clear advantage in GPU perfomance.

As I said: raw performance, yes. But you don't just brute force data into those GPUs. More important is synchronization of data, caching and so forth. Many of the pixel operations can be outsourced to other elements and as long we don't have any clue on the exact architecture of either GPU the 0.600 TFlops difference is just a number. We don't compare off-the-shelv graphic cards here.

Oh god, imagine all that power in the hands of Sony first party developers.

This.

I can't even. What they did with Uncharted and Killzone this gen on 512mb...

That article.....I keep waiting for a dose of reality to keep my hype in check but I am almost foaming at the mouth over this stuff.

Digital Foundry don't seem the type to put such a big vote of confidence toward something they are unsure about. The future looks bright gents it looks bright indeed.

well said.

this is why something doesn't add up with these rumors. there is no way ms gives that much advantage to sony.

Systems are just designed to achieve different tasks in slightly different ways.
Microsoft will clearly have a better and richer OS with a great multitasking experience. I'd expect tons of new features and exciting services to be enjoyed during gameplay.
Sony seems focused on improving the OS and functionalities that we're seeing on Vita but the system was designed to give developers a powerful enviroment to run games and a more powerful GPU coupled with really fast RAM will really make a difference in the hands on specific developers.
That's it if the rumors are true.

Based on the economy, Sonys position, the move towards casual etc, I was expecting 4 core with 2gb GDDR5 and a super affordable price. But secretly hoping for 4gb. 8 core with 4gb? Sign me up! Just hope the price is still decent and not in the elite range. Don't want PS3 pricing again.

I'll settle for £299.

lol, don't we feel silly thinking things will change and everything goes as predicted ages ago??

durango/orbis = powerful, traditional
Nintendo = convenient, innovative.

every generation is the same, choose your non-nintendo console of choice and add the nitendo console to the mix and you are all set.

I would feel great about $500 but would drop $600 begrudgingly as well. How about you guys?

Exciting services? Honestly what more would you want from your console than what is already available on the Vita? The only thing I can think of is allowing videoplayback while the game is running, but that's pretty much it.

Normally, though this time (for the first time in 3 generations) I'll be skipping the Nintendo console and grabbing the UHD twins.

The "buy a PC" talk needs to seriously stop. Really.

Show me where i can play sony's first party games(or even most 3rd party games)on a PC then i would happily build a gaming PC with 50 petaflops and 50 petaflops of RAM.

That argument doesn't take into account that not every game is available for PC. So no, i will not buy a PC.

FLOPS * average utilization * efficiency matters. So if MS can find a way to keep its flops utilized a lot more and more efficient, they can definitely match or exceed the PS4.

That is completely wrong and you are making a trend based on 2 generations. I'm not a fan of Nintendo, but neither N64 nor Gamecube could be compared to the Wii and WiiU.

My limit is £380. Not really sure why but I just think it'd be morally unfair for me to go higher, or to justify it to my wife lol. Ideal would be £350 or even less though. 500gb PS3 super slim is still £250 out here...

why do you guys say that the ps4 is powerful when they could only play bf3 on medium settings using that card?

This part is my favorite and why I'm not worried about the specs (they're great regardless):
Of course, these ballpark tests are not the be-all-and-end-all of next-gen power - let's not forget that the new consoles are dedicated games machines gifted with a host of advantages over PC hardware. Factor out the overhead of the Windows OS, introduce ever-evolving development tools written for a fixed platform, and consider the performance advantages of a dedicated design - particularly the fast interconnects between CPU, GPU and RAM. What we have here is hardware that easily punches above its weight compared to performance couched purely in PC terms. It's a state of affairs borne out by both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3: by 2007, PC hardware had already moved significantly beyond the raw horsepower offered by current-gen consoles, yet games like God of War 3, Halo 4 and Uncharted 3 have extracted visual performance that could only have been dreamed of back then. Based on what we know about the next-gen consoles, there's little reason why history can't repeat itself.

By the way, did anything happen in these 26 pages? I just got on and it's 26 pages... hate asking for cliff notes but just standard back and forth or any new news?

Because optimisation and fixed architecture and blah blah blah.

Here's a task for you: Try getting 360-level performance from The Witcher 2 on a PC roughly equivalent to that console. Go on. ;)

Nope. Battle lines for the next system war are drawn, the machine with most flops wins instantly and everyone should buy a PC because next gen is there already. :p

I would not call Durango or Orbis powerful especially not Durango. A GTX 670 is more than 2x Durango's performance not including the VRAM is GDDR5 as opposed to DDR3. I would say the Durango and Orbis are a nice compromise between power, heat, price, and performance though.

Exactly Vita does pretty much everything except video playback while a game is running. Let's think what other services can be added and how much more RAM you would need for OS.

While a game is running you can:
Playback video offline or streaming service (Netflix, YouTube, Skype Video)
System works as a DVR, watch TV and record TV
Stream on other Device like Tablets and Smartphones

These are the only things I can think of that they can add, and are the only features that are not on Vita. Everything like playback music, browser store, browse web, view trophies, cross/party chat, view LiveArea leaderboards of another game and etc can be done on 256MB RAM. I think nextgen just needs 512MB of RAM for OS.

What platform do you think will be better for multiplats. I don't really care about sony or ms exclusives.

I guess it depends which platform devs feel most comfortable developing for and which one is the lowest common denominator.

I can't wait to see what Polyphony Digital, Naughty Dog, Sony Santa Monica, Guerrilla, Sucker Punch and Ready at Dawn will do on PS4 O_O

I feel comfortable at the $500 mostly because of the mileage I have gotten out of my PS3. $600 for the amount of entertainment this thing has provided seems pretty dang cheap now.

Good for you. I have a gaming PC for superior multiplats so only exclusives can entice me to buy the system and this generation I've not been impressed at all by Sony or MS's output.

I hope it will be better next-gen.

$499 with break even point at 2-3 purchased games at launch. $399 flash only SKU coming 6 months later.
Goes for both consoles.
