[Eurogamer\DF] Orbis Unmasked: what to expect from the next-gen PlayStation.

I only trust journalists and official announcements. You people get way too excited about some weird deliberately vague stuff posted by GAF dudes.

Not only is it vague but its often contradictory every couple of days, or more specifically when a new rumor emerges.

i'm trying to remember
didn't the factory mold/shell for ALL of sony's recent hardware releases/revisions (psp go/ps3 2.0/ps vita/ps3 3.0) leaked months in advance?

Drive by posts that contradict previous information should come at least with a slight explanation.

Otherwise it just seems like they are making fun of a bunch of us.

I find it funny how many people suddenly know exactly what Sony is doing next gen, even tho they have been saying for weeks to months, they have no idea and probably won't (I'm talking pre eurogamer article and some pre vgleak stuff).

I guess it will be vice versa for MS when they get there leaks eh?

Screenshots of Orbis/Durango games will tell me all I need to know about these consoles. All this technical stuff goes over my head. I admit that I preferred Nintendo's introduction of the Wii U better than Microsoft and Sony's introduction of their hardware.

When I first saw that Zelda Wii U demo, I was really excited about the Wii U. I thought about all the great games I'd be getting to finally play in HD with good visuals: Super Mario Bros, Zelda, Metroid, Rayman, Donkey Kong, Pokemon!

And then the specs came out and I lost interest. Only 1GB for games? I was disappointed in the numbers yet wowed by the demos. How stupid is that? And now I just can't bring myself to buying a Wii U because even though I was impressed by what it can do, I'm not impressed by the hardware.

And the same is true for this situation. People are making comparisons between 8gigs of DDR3 and 4gigs of GDDR5 and the only thing that really matters is the gaming experience. Show me a real time trailer or a screenshot and don't tell me a single thing about the specs.

They're probably PC gamers.

On pc I'm used to 75-85 hz not 60 :p

On consoles I was used to 60 fps during the dreamcast-ps2-xbox 1 era. It's been painful to go back to 30 I hope next gen puts emphasis on responsiveness in the form of a locked 60 fps (and level design and gameplay) over shinies and bloom.

Kinda a dickmove if you ask me. He knows obviously more then us, so he can just say whatever he wants. Then sit back and see how everything unfolds on this board. Imo when everybody is in the dark, people with knowledge here shouldn't joke around.

Proelite works for Microsoft (not Xbox division) and has been saying Durango>Orbis for a while now.

I think this rhetoric where one machine is more powerful than the other needs to end. There is a very big wrench in comparing things apples to apples. Performance is now dependant on engines who favour bandwith versus memory or higher polygon count over texture variety.

This. It sometimes is really funny how those people here vouch for each other or just repeat what other, confirmed people have said. Like when Iherre talked about how there is something missing with those specs, and suddenly a couple of other posters just repeated what he said without adding anything new, sorry but that's just fishy.

Hardware phrases of the current gen:

360: None
PS3: "Unlock the potential of the Cell"

Hardware phrases of next gen?:

720: "Wait until devs unlock the potential of the secret sauce"
PS4: None?

Well it can even be said that he wasn't talking about hardware. But he is implying a significant discrepancy between Durango and Orbi's software. That is important for example, more so than hardware numbers.

In all honesty, I think he was joking. People are so caught up in which machine is better that they completely disavow any sort of logic.

Nope, I've read in one of the threads that the PS4 will be spreading some "Secret Sauce" on its toast too. This shit moves too fast and changes too quickly to keep track.

Both of these systems are going to be releasing games that blow you away. This isn't going to be a situation where one of them is constantly seen as "superior".
Proelite was just having a bit of tongue and cheek with that comment.

Sony maybe, but MS might decide to spend more $ on services and give smaller budgets to their studios. MS don't really even care about gaming anymore so its hard to predict what they'll do.

I was thinking about some of the things mentioned in the rumours so far and i thought of something.

It seems the word is the new controller will incorporate move somehow, some saying they have managed to get rid of the orbs that the Move currently has.

There was also talk of the controllers having mood lights on the controller for better immersion, what if this is for move detection? If the split apart controller idea is true than this could possible aid in giving every owner their own version of move in the box.

MS is going after the Hardcore first and foremost. Make no mistake about that. They will have some surprises this E3 for sure.

As it stands now, according to the rumors, I think there is a very good chance that we *will* constantly see a console as superior, more like last gen. Over 150% processing power and 300% memory speed compared to it's competitor speak a very clear language.

And just because a developer here, who may or may not know something, and who is probably under a very strict NDA and who doesn't want to take sides, formulates a vague, diplomatic response regarding a power parity between those two new consoles, doesn't mean we should ignore the rumored specs.

I think this rhetoric where one machine is more powerful than the other needs to end. There is a very big wrench in comparing things apples to apples. Performance is now dependant on engines who favour bandwith versus memory or higher polygon count over texture variety.

If those rumored specs are true, one console will have prettier games or the potential for it. I would call that "more powerful".

I just hope they do something different with the OS/Dashboard.

I honestly stopped playing my 360 for the most part ever since it went metro and also became totally ad-centric.

Remember those Wii U speculation threads being completely whacked out (edit: and I mean what people unfortunately called the "echo chamber")? That's what reading the last couple pages is like.
Prime example...

No. MS are going to launch with an under-powered box that has Kinect 2.0 packed in. They'll dedicate most of their E3 conference to Kinect sports 3, Dance central 4, facebook, twitter and cable services. Maybe they'll show off a quick video with 3rd party games that are in development, but for the most part non-gaming related things will dominate their conference. I think we all just need to accept than MS simply don't care about gaming anymore.

third parties?

Which won't look as good on nextbox due to bandwidth constraints, weak GPU and too much RAM being dedicated to OS functions.

I thought we were calling this "wizard jizz" going forward..

That makes sense. My inside sources are telling me "Wizard Jizz" is a keyword for secret technology that allows you to create potions and spells with Wonderbook2 using real ingredients like a lock of blonde hair, and a bloody tampon to summon Kate Upton in the flesh.

It's cute that a certain group of people like to tell themselves this. Maybe it's ignorance, maybe it's a hopeful wish, or maybe it's just nervousness.

EDIT: I hadn't even gotten to this golden nugget.

You remind me of Fox news pundits who downplay everything Democrat leading up to the election.

But whatever helps you sleep at night dude. Keep those fingers crossed.

Trust me I didn't want things to be like this, but actions speak louder than words and MS are making it very clear that Durango won't be a gaming console, but instead a cable box/tv tuner.

You forgot "Xbox 1.5" for 360.

Sure it wasn't THEIR hardware phrase, but reading this thread it seems familiar for some reason.

Yeah, that's why they've bought a couple different developers to make games for next gen....

Do ads really bother you guys that much? I remember when in-game ads first started happening and people flipped the eff out. I thought it was kinda cool that jet set moto had ads. Made it feel kinda realistic in some way. Dashboard ads don't bother me at all. I mean, it's not like I can't quickly get in whatever game i have in my 360.

i've got a new favourite insider rumour for durango:

They haven't even officially confirmed Durango's existence yet have they? Bit early to come to such a conclusion.

The magical DDR3 sauce.
Honestly I don't think will see nothing of drastically better on both. But this time xbox could handle worst transparancies compared ps4.

This is getting ridiculous. The next thing in this thread will be how and when the PS5/Xbox1080 are released and which portfolio they are up to.

We don't have the final specs and we are really starting to discuss which route MS is going? I really don't see why MS should abandon games for the living room, but hey if you know more, please go ahead...

Old. Clearly not happening. 16 cores, 3GB of Gddr5, 5Gb of DDr3, almost 300 MB of edram, two gpus?

This shit would mop the floor with Orbis.
