Rumored Chinese Forum Xbox720 specs: 8CoreCPU,8GB,HD8800GPU,W8,640GBHDD

I also believe the product can't survive. Too many devices achieve the same results. They basically hope for lazy third party support.

I hope Sony first party turn up the heat on what we expect from 'next gen'.

You get more of one thing for less of another. There is a trade off.

Says who?

It's probably nothing.

I can't follow all these rumors.. one minute the Xbox is a beast out-powering the PS4, next they are equal in power, then the PS4 is better by a bit, and now people talk about the Nextbox being a low power low price machine.. so what is it?
Well the "rumors" thing should indicate why the specs of these still unannounced consoles change so rapidly. :)

For all we know the video game news is Sony dropping the price on the Vita. Or Nintendo deciding to let the world know that the Wii U was released two months ago. Excited regardless. Such a slow time of the year for gaming.

Atari U.S. files for bankruptcy. (Ben Fritz's hinted news)

http://www.latimes.com/entertainmen...et-ct-atari-bankruptcy-20130119,0,25279.story

The U.S. operations of iconic but long-troubled video game maker Atari have filed for bankruptcy in an effort to break free from their debt-laden French parent.

Atari Inc. and three of its affiliates filed petitions for Chapter 11 reorganization in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New York late Sunday.

Its leaders hope to break the American business free from French parent Atari S.A. and in the next few months find a buyer to take the company private. They hope to grow a modest business focused on digital and mobile platforms, according to a knowledgeable person not authorized to discuss the matter privately.

Karak is making sure he isn't making any errors with his post or something like that, it should be ready for tomorrow. CVG are likely dropping their article on monday (to maximize hits).

Big week ahead of us then, especially with Microsoft announcing fiscal results and their event on the 24th.

I'm skeptical by nature so don't get mad but is Karak 100% confirmed legit? I can't remember much he has revealed.

So far he seems legit, but he's always been pretty vague with his reveals.

That's BS.. he needs to just drop whatever info his "buddy" gave him.. if it was on me I would have released it already.

oh -_-

Options lol.

MS are shoving gaming down the toilet in favour of social media apps, Kinect and other forms of bloatware.

Like I've stated many times today, nextbox will be more of a cable box/tv tuner than a gaming console.

Yes, all those millions spent developing non-game Halo 4.

All those millions invested in new development teams.

They clearly hate gaming. Do you feel "betrayed"?

Jesus, some of the comments recently are just hilarious.

He didn't say they don't or won't develop games anymore. But it seems they may be willing to sacrifice a considerable amount of hardware power for non-gaming applications, which of course would anger hardcore gamers. It's not rocket science, you know.

Then buy a PS4 or PC if it's that bothersome.

I remember when we all WANTED this shit in consoles.

"We" still do. I have a ton of apps I use on my 360 now. I'd love a lot more. And if they're going to bundle Kinect 2, I hope to god they have some really good voice recognition software. On par with the Google Search app. And obviously leverage Skype in as many ways as possible.

"We all"? Not me. My problem is that consoles are already offering a lot of additional features like movie playback, voice chat, internet browsing and services like Netflix etc. I don't need more, and I don't want them to sacrifice hardware power for that. And I am quite sure many others see it similar.

Agreed. But apparently we're not the same people who bought the 360 at launch. Except I was....

While I'd prefer better specs, I'm not too fussed about the power of either console any more. Enough for devs to have room to breathe is fine with me. I just think it's far, far too early to poo-poo the console because it has so much RAM dedicated to the OS, like so many are doing in here and otherwise, as if it's a negative.

I think this shit is what's going to keep the console market viable. PCs are only viable for gaming because they do more than that. Mobile exploded for games because phones do more than make phone calls but rather because phones do more than play games.

The people who are saying they just want a pure gaming machine speak as though the fact that the devices can do so much more than games is some negative aspect that inhibits their ability to play games. The fact is these features are what keeps our hobbies viable. The newer generation of gamers have already moved on to other alternatives. Our group has the games hook but to keep the tens of billions that MS, Sony and Nintendo invests into this industry relevant, they need to adapt.

Lets see how they adapt first before writing them off.

Not at the expense of everything else apparently.

I agree with the above post about them treating next box as a proprietary computer. If they can pull it off it would be impressive.

Its a direct tradeoff vs. graphical power. Of course it can be a negative to some people depending on how they value graphics vs. features. Its not like its free.

I'm 100% sure if MS does go that route they have compelling evidence why said features will bring more to the experience than horsepower though. And we don't even know what features MS is planning to bring yet.

If you have a console with plenty of ram, enough power for games... why to limit it to only games? why not to use it for another things while you are not playing games?

speaking of which ..... how does everyone feel abouit windows 8 being the basis for the 720 dashboard?

If you mean Metro, we already have that. They need to remove the idiotic ads for stuff like insurance, cars etc and leave the ad space to games, movies, music etc I love the integrated store, but hate the non-content ads. Something tells me we'll be getting a lot more of the type of ads I hate.

As the base I'm fine. Windows 8 kernel with customised Metro style dashboard is what I'm after. The actual current Windows 8 interface is not suitable for a controller.

Windows 8 what? Kernel, UI... Desktop?

I think Windows 8 kernel is a given. UI wise, unless they give a way to control it that's just as intuitive as touch or limit the feature set, it may be a bit much. As far as desktop is concerned... there's no place for it here.

Things I would like to see carried over is device interoperability, file system and connectivity.

I would also like to see what other control-scheme options beyond Kinect touch though I'm not sure how fidelity will change all this given unknowns about Kinect 2.

There's an awful lot of prick-teasing in these n/g console threads. It was fun at first but is getting tiresome now.

Can't get many new graphics cards for that money though

You can! By the time these consoles are released you'll be able to buy a mid-range card for $250-300 that will handily outperform whatever is inside Durante and Orbis. Then spend the rest on Steam/Amazon/GMG/Origin sales and you're golden :)

Of course. Why would devs lie?

Because they're affiliated in some way to a specific party? You don't think that Remedy would say good things about Durango or Naughty Dog about Orbis?

MS knows that its PC sales are declining. The Xbox is their silver bullet to have people invest in Microsoft's lethargic app ecosystem. Their way for people to buy Windows again.

I truly hope that's not true, as it could also compromise the new Xbox's sales. The new paradigm has failed so far on PC, tablet and phone. Is it really a smart choice to bet the Xbox farm on it?

Maybe I'm crazy, but I'm totally down for a console that is more like a PC. If that bad boy has kb n m support, a good browser and multimedia features than I'm down because I would love a "all in one" box at a good price.

Shouldn't you get a "Steambox" then?

We need to assume that both MS and Sony have done their maths and optimised their architectures for end to end efficiency

If MS had shot bandwidth, they wouldn't need a decent GPU because it'd just be sitting there waiting for data, and that would be a waste of money to include it. So you have to assume that along the pipeline overall, DDR3 with 60-70GB/s is enough

The fun part is how the edram works, how much of the rendering pipeline can genuinely use that to save main memory bandwidth, and what special sauce there is. (Somewhat offset by promises of magic from edram with 360 that didn't entirely pan out)

All plenty of unclear details to fuel crazy speculation. Love it :)
