Project X Zone is coming to both Europe, Australia, US in the summer of 2013 for 3DS

Not a game I would have bought in the first place, but this growing trend of half-assed partial localizations is worrying.

You're not doing any favors to your game being niche and not selling a ton by adding a language barrier.

It hasn't affected a game I care about yet, but I think we should try to do something about it. Petition?

I'm perfectly fine with more games with japanese VA + subs if that means we get the games

Take it one step at a time. At this moment everyone should be glad that someone is even localizing a japanese title in the first place, especially when several key games like AAI2, type 0, bravely default etc doesnt have a western release announcement.

There is no language barrier. It just asks you to READ. It's no different from how foreign films are treated in the US and most European countries (who know what they're doing). And it's not like there's some super-important plot you need to follow (going by what people who played the JPN version say, it's pretty dumb anyway) so what's the issue here?

A petition is really useless here. The VO would be ridiculously expensive for this kind of niche game.

I don't see how any of this would make it a half-assed localization. If they were throwing the Japanese script into Google Translate I'd be with you but just because they don't want to spend a ton of money on dozens of voice actors for a game whose audience is tiny and often prefers the original vocal track anyway? No.

This.

Let's face it, Project x Zone is for a very niche audience. It likely won't sell a lot of copies, so it's probably not worth the budget for getting it fully localized in English [hiring English voice actors/etc.]. Honestly, even if they did, I'd still prefer to play in Japanese with English subtitles if given the option.

I wouldn't be surprised in Senran Kagura gets the same treatment. If so, that will be yet another Day One Purchase for myself.

The game had limited appeal in the first place (moreso with the gameplay sounding mediocre), and most of that appeal will lie with an audience that prefers Japanese VA. Plus I have a feeling they wouldn't have gotten the correct VA for each character, and thus it'd screw up the fanservice part anyway.

The original game uses original voice actors, right? It would be a nightmare tracking down all the original US actors on top of that, as well as recasting characters who never spoke English before.

That, and 86% of the audience for this game would hate Namco for not giving a JP option.

A few of the importers are saying that it's repetitive?

Can some of you expand on that, if you could?

I haven't finished the game yet but a lot of it is once you find the best chain of attacks for a pair/pair with support, combat doesn't change too much. Everyone seems to get an additional attack or attacks upon hitting a certain level but that's not really enough to drastically change your attack orders. Every battle is basically: launch enemy/break enemy shield to launch them, and keep them in the air as long as possible until you run out of moves or they die. It's identical to Endless Frontier.

Also, IIRC enemy health starts out pretty low at first when you can take out each unit with a single pair unit but it scales pretty high after a few hours where it's taking multiple pairs to take out a single unit, and then there are like 20+ of those units on the map so it feels really grindy/drawn out. It's a weird spike in the length of time it takes to complete each mission and the difficulty of the monsters too; I'm frequently getting new characters who are many levels above the ones I currently have (so the new characters will be on equal level with the enemies of the stage) so I could be doing something wrong in maximizing XP gain though.

A lot of the novelty in every mission so far has been seeing what new characters I get and playing around with the kit. After that wears off it's just beating up enemies to get to the next stage. I can't read any Japanese though but that's just what I find repetitive in the gameplay.

This. I'm part of the 86% and having the Japanese voices is a huge plus, at least for this game. Hopefully Senran Kagura pulls that off too, day one if it does.

Of course, dual audio would make everyone happy but this is way too niche to make that a sound investment imo.

lol I just read a brief preview of the story premise.

I kind of wish I hadn't :( So stupid... this is the kind of game for which I'd rather not have a shitty throwaway narrative to tie things together. Just present the game for what it is -- an excuse to combine characters from the pantheons of three publishers and then have at it.

Oh well.

This for the most part.

Thing is they had a dcent balance up until about Stage 20 but after this it gets very bad. The time it takes to take out a single enemy isn't so bad, but the sheer amount they start throwing at you and the amount of HP that starts to rack up it just really bogs it down.

If they had the pacing of stage 1-18 all the way until the last 5 stages or so then it would have been a much better game.

All this said the sheer amount of love and work they put into every character is simply amazing. The work Monolith did with characters like X and even some of the Sega Characters just shits all over the characters parent companies efforts for nearly a decade.

By about a little over halfway through the game you'll have unlocked every character as well as all of their attacks, so the feeling of character growth is gone and every stage is just a grind to get to the next one. Later on stages can take a good 1-2 hours to complete and the stages themselves are pretty barren with with no meaningful terrain mechanics other than some walls and obstacles.

It's generally agreed that the game falls apart after about the halfway point. They use the same plot element over and over again to explain why you need to go onto the next stage with the villains doing the same thing over and over as well. The story doesn't make you eager at all to see what will happen next.

The game's supposed to be about 50 hours long and I stopped a little short of 40 after reading it doesn't get much better. I still liked it better than NxC but it's quite terrible as an SRPG.

Pretty much this. There are certainly cool moments involving fan fav characters, but the overall story isn't enough to push you forward when you're playing as characters you don't care about. On top of the shallow game mechanics, the whole thing just becomes a bit of a chore.

But yeah, better than NxC. I will say though, that the sprite work is pretty fucking awesome. For many, that'll be worth the price of admission. It was for me, anyhow.

I'm glad this is coming out for reasons of seeing future Japanese 3DS titles getting released, but Namco x Capcom was one of the most boring games I've ever played in my life. It's completely awful in almost every single gameplay point. I wasted eighty dollars and like forty hours of my life before vomiting and moving on.

Anybody that is looking at this beyond simply seeing pictures of characters you know next to each should be warned.

So happy this is coming over. I never thought it would. Thank ye Harada.

Question though, what is the pronunciation?
Project X (ecks) Zone
Project Cross Zone
Project Zone (the X being omitted)

I'm pretty certain that it is pronounced like the bolded. That said, get prepared for much of the gaming press to use the first pronunciation.

They are keeping the Japanese voices so...

Purojecto Kurosu Zone?

That's how I'll pronounce it anyway

Considering the reception in Japan, this announcement is getting way more excitement than it probably deserves. There will be a lot of disappointed fans, come summer, I expect. But, hey, any localization news is good news.

I'll likely still buy it, just for the hell of it.

i've yet to see any comment about the negatives of this game that wasn't already in namco x capcom and i loved that game to death ( despite the flaws that game had )

i can say yes to this kind of game.
Yes it's repetitive once you've accustomed to some combos ( and you'll do that quite often ) but namco x capcom compensated by the freaking huge cast and the fact that despite this repetition , there was a high difficulty.

The dialog and the cross over being good were just a plus. i'm hoping that with a cast being bigger ( or as big ) i'll get the same feelign.

I doubt I'd be disappointed by this game.

I've already reached the pinnacle of video game disappointment with Uncharted 2 and Final Fantasy X.

I gladly bought Endless Frontier knowing what it was, and I'll gladly buy this. I hope the same goes for the rest of the people planning on getting it, though.

I think a lot of people are just seeing their favorite characters and don't care about how it's going to play.

Exceed was actually good though. First EF wasn't bad, though a bit lacking.

Yes, it's Project Cross Zone. From the Cross Gauge that you spend on attacks. It's also a riff on the cross-dimensional/reality element of the plot.

It's so irrational, but even if this game is sub par I feel like I have to buy it. It's the fact that it has lots of characters I love, the amazing sprite work and my love for RPGs. Plus this game being successful is a good thing for non-Japanese 3DS owners.

I was an irrationally obsessed Namco fanatic when Namco x Capcom came out and it still managed to disgust me at how bad the game was.

One of my best friends is obsessed with Namco AND Capcom AND loves SRPGs (whereas I mostly dislike them) and even he hated the game.

Pandering fanservice can only go so far.

I'm still glad the game is coming out though, in a roundabout way.

Only thing I don't like about the voices being in Japanese is that Yuri won't be voiced by Troy Baker. Don't care otherwise.
