So...really....how did Resident Evil 4 turn into such a masterpiece?

Pretty much because Mikami is a boss. I mean, what other dev is so talented that even their throwaway/scrapped original concept is good enough to be its own actual game (DMC)?
A lot of ideas and such in DMC made it into RE4 final. Go back and play it, it's pretty interesting.

Resident Evil 4 is simply one of the best games ever, everything was well balanced, it's just incredible.

The first time i got the game on Gamecube, i was simply blown away.

I remember having Metroid Prime 2 and Super Monkey Ball to trade, went to Gamestop and got RE4 thinking it'll be another tank controlled Resident Evil... boy was i wrong, i couldn't stop playing... it was that good ! I wish i could feel that intense feeling again but no game this gen came close to it imo.

Many games this gen were inspired by RE4. Gears of War being one of them...

Having just finished RE4 for the first time last week (I know, I know. Curse you backlog!) I now understand where all the praise comes from. This game is so good, and so expertly paced that it makes similar games feel disjointed in comparison. The places and scenario's they come up with for the player are challenging and inventive and never feel recycled. Truly great game.

After playing and finishing 4, it was a sad realization that the franchise has fallen so far from greatness and become so vacuous.

One thing it did, was not give it all to you at once. Guns, ammo, upgrades, roundhouse kick, then out of no where your suplexing monks. The build up to the boss fights. Reload animation was amazing. Backtracking wasn't a chore, it didn't make you "sigh" when you had to. You can shoot a thrown axe down, shoot it out they're hand and watch him or her pick it up. No boss had to be killed in one way. For me the only game to come close when comes to atmosphere is ZombiU, technically not impressive, but use of filters and post processing effects to really create an atmosphere of doom and gloom.

I've yet to play it...

^ What is this!

Well I started long time ago but only finished the HD version last year.

The setting is great, the feeling of "I'm alone but not alone", the music when I find a place to rest is very calming after a fight.

It's a good game to play in the cold winter and you can play with a friend, solving the puzzles together, taking turns (or alone in the room to get your tension up while the lady is making some cake, that's good too).

There are many other reasons to make this a great game with a decent replayability.

Never played. But I vastly prefer RE5 over the classics, so I maybe don't like the franchise for the right reasons.

I think if I never played any other RE's 5 would be good, but coming into 5 with the knowledge of where the series has been and what has happened 5 was, at least for me, extremely disappointing, and that was before I ever beat 4.

It was all about Ada

And Ashely btw. She's good looking.

LEOOOOOOOOOON!

WAIT!

Loved RE4...the only one I finished actually :) if anyone wants to fill me in, how does is compare to Revelations? Just wanna know what's in store for me when I pick it up for Wiiu :)

I know I'm in the minority.

Before playing RE5 I played but never finished RE2,Code Veronica and Remake. Then I played and finished RE:Zero for gamecube and enjoy it.

I never got to play RE4 so I when to RE5 with my latest memories being Zero. And it was such a huge improvement in the buddie mechanics, the graphics where amazing, finally got rid of those tank controls and it was just fun to play. Maybe if I played RE4 before I would be a hater but I'm glad I didn't because RE5 is one of my favorite games on this gen. possibly of all time.

RE5 and RE4 control practically the same.

RE4 is the epitome of game design, it's fantastically paced with rewarding mechanics and solid gunplay....but the MOST important part is that it NEVER repeats any encounter throughout the whole game.

I agree, this is the most important aspect of the game. The great pacing, the balanced progression systems and the spectacular moment to moment action are all enhanced by the designed enemy encounters. No tps/fps (or frankly any action game at all) before RE4 had the guts and conviction to scrap repetitive enemy encounters.

It was modern DOOM. The game was about being a lone man fighting blasting baddies all day with powerful guns and having extremely active gameplay.

Hell, it even fakes you out a few times. "oh, another gigante? no pro - OH SHIT THERE ARE TWO OF THEM WHAT THE FUCK"

I've always thought it testament to how fucking good RE4's gameplay is that RE5 still manages to be pretty fun to play despite being a game full of terrible design choices.

I liked 5, a lot actually. The one thing I can't stand is you can't tell your AI partner to wait somewhere so they always get fucked up. Hated that shit.

The death animations.

Better than RE6's animations, some of which take too long.

Also the ability to speedrun the game and the fun little glitches you can do to make a playthrough seem almost completely different from the normal way to play the game.

The funny thing about RE5 is that it's pretty similar to RE4, but IMO almost every single change they made is a change for the worse. It's still a fun enough game to play - the core gameplay is just that strong - but the whole thing basically just feels like "Resident Evil 4! Made a bit shitter."

At no point in RE4 do you ever feel like the developers cut corners, or said "good enough", or saved something for the sequel. It feels like they thought they were making the last action game ever.

It must suck for the the dozens of developers who worked their brains to exhaustion by helping put together an amazing game like RE4, only to be completely brushed aside by fanboys. The ones who literally think 1 person had everything to do with what made such a large and complex game so successful.

RE4 was so great because a lot of dedicated and talented developers wanted to make an amazing game.

Best reloading animation ever. Every time I play this game I keep this weapon because of this animation all the time although the semi-automatic is far better.
Nah, the bolt action turns into a long range cannon with the damage it deals. That's another thing about RE4 - the weapon balance is pretty tight, even in the most unexpected places. It really is the epitome of 'attention to detail.'

This part is what I think set it apart. Consider the games that were around when it was released, and how groundbreaking just the demo was. How many times did you folks replay the village section and find new things about it every time, all the hair raising moments of the Ganados swarming in on you while you barricaded the door, barricaded the windows, only to have them come through a window on the second floor and come in after you. It was a mindblowing way to have a small bit of sandbox in the game, with the key of it being that you had to always bring your A game and be constantly thinking about where you were going to go next, where you could hide, where you could run to, because otherwise you were dead.

Agree. And that's why I was careful. Though I did name Mikami, it clearly wasn't just him.
