It's Official GAF. I'm too old to know some new slang.

The realization of my irrelevancy, at least as it relates to hip and cool culture, hit me like a ton of bricks yesterday. I'm a 33-year-old college student, and while I never really feel that out-of-place in my classes or at school in general, I came to know my own mortality, or at the very least, my own 'cool' mortality.

Sitting in class, we did a group project to get to know one another better. A separate group from mine, mentioned the word "ratchet" and
everybody laughed. I immediately knew that it was a slang word but I had no fucking idea what it meant.

I asked someone sitting next to me, "what the hell does that mean?" She explained it to me and I still don't understand. I promise to never use it in a sentence, young GAF. But hey, why don't you tell me some other newer words so I can beef up my vocabulary.

Fuck. I'm old.

You know what's crazy? I'm 24 and I knew this thread would be about that damn word. I don't know how I knew... But I knew. That word is completely nonsensical. I firmly believe some people just say it to try to fit in. It's idiotic.

Why the fuck have you divided the sentences like that?

S'okay...a few years ago, I consulted a dictionary for the definition of the word "epic," to make sure I wasn't missing something.

I wasn't.

I m 27 and as far as I knew "ratchet" meant a gun, a pistol or handgun specifically. But I feel you OP. I'm in college as well and am the oldest person in my classes. It hard me the hardest when we were discussing 9/11 and of my classmates piped up and said "I don't really remember it, I was only in grade 2 at the time."

I've never heard ratchet being used like that. On a different note, can anyone from Maryland explain to me what "cised it" means? Is it short for circumcised it? what does that even

:( I start school in a few days, and I'm 32....

I saw some kid with those big raver jeans, like with the belts and chains hanging down from them. I though, man, those were popular when i was a teen.....then I felt old.

But kids still wear those big raver jeans with like a colored stripe down them?

I'm so old, I hear Ratchet and don't even think this:

But instead, this:

I assume it's because a "ratchet" is a "tool". So ratchet is just an evolution of the slang term "tool" used in a more specific sense.

It's still a dumb word.

20 here, first time I've heard of that word in a situation where it doesn't relate to a videogame series or a type of axe.

I'm pretty sure "cised" is what the Sports Junkies use all the time to describe the fact they are excited about something happening. They are all from MD, so, that may be what you're thinking of.

I feel your pain, OP. I'm 29 and in college, and I feel very similarly whenever there's some dumb group project we have to do. I had a 3 hour biology lab last semester. I would say, on average, the 3 other members of my group were on their phones looking at facebook/instagram/whatever for at least an hour and a half of it. They would talk about "musicians" like 2chainz and I would just sit and nod politely while doing the bulk of the work.

It's very hard for me to relate to a youth that spent their entire life on the internet.

I'm 33 also and I always look up any new slang I hear and, if I like it, appropriate it for my own use.

Like a last year when I started throwing shade and putting motherfuckers on blast :-)

Kids don't actually use the word "feels" in public do they? That's just an internet thing, right? Shitty slang is shitty.

I overheard some guy in his 20's using it the other day at uni, it's already begun.

I knew it was going to be about this word. I, too, struggle with oldfuckitis. Hip-hop GAF will help.

But stay away from Pop GAF. The language they speak is basically Old Tongue used to communicate with unknown horrors from the darkest depths of the cosmos. Like Mariah Carey.

Did "mint" ever come back, cause I really like that one. Never went away in my vocabulary, that's for damn sure. I don't even know if it counts as slang.

Cool has an expiry date. Since the youngest generation determines what and what not is cool, eventually you'll reach an age where you will never be cool again. As soon as you stop trying so hard to be cool, life becomes much more fun laughing at those who do.
