Punch-Out!! Let's talk about it!...!

Would rather have one of the opponents since they have more moves than just punching.
It wouldn't really fit the roster though. If Little Mac was in, I'm sure Sakurai's team could come up with something like they have with characters like Captain Falco.

One of my favorite game. I'd like a new Punch-Out!! on 3DS.
Also, this is kinda funny that Glass Joe and Gabby Jay are both French but both lame :(
This serie is a lot of fun, even if in Super Punch Out, the last circuit is full of cheaters.

Loved the Wii version. Don't think I ever finished on the harder mode though. Maybe I'll throw it in the WiiU tonight.

One of my favorite series, straight up. The arcade version was fucking trash compared to the home version. Yeah, I just said that. Fucking TRASH! For a quarter it was OK but gameplay wise the NES version was king. If you can't beat it it just meant you had to get better. The controls were pixel perfect, it was like an free-form version of Rhythm Heaven. And the inclusion of Iron Mike? Damn son, you couldn't have planned a game for that time period and that market any better. That commercial was bananas!! There was absolutely no way that you could see that and not beg for that shit for Christmas. I got that, Legend of Zelda and SMB...so yeah, best Christmas ever.

I walked to Blockbuster in the rain and waited all day for a copy of Super Punch-Out to come in. Freezing my ass off soaking wet at the counter just praying that the people who rented it didn't want to keep it an extra day. It was just as bad-ass as I hoped it would be.

The Wii version was probably my favorite remake of any game ever. Then once you go through it with the patterns from your childhood burned in your brain, the game flips it all on it's head and you have to fight these lifelong familiar boxers with all new styles. Damn Nintendo, you made me feel like a 7year old again with that shit!

Wow man, what an awesome series. I hope there's a new one for WiiU. I can't wait to get the WiiU VC version. Ok, that's enough, my phone is about to die.

GREAT THREAD OP!!<3

The way he just laughs at the end of the commercial.. Brutal.

Punch-Out is so damn good; I think it's the Secret best Nintendo franchise. The reveal of the Wii game had me more hyped than just about any other game. In fact I'm gonna go pop it in the Wii U and play it right after I'm done writing this. So cool how it's basically a remake and a (fantastic) sequel all in one

I do have a slightly different nostalgia for the series though, as I never even heard of the game until my friend unlocked it in Animal Crossing with an Action Replay. And while all the other nerds were jacked about playing Zelda, I kept trying to figure out how to play Punch-Out, not realizing it was less of a boxing game and more of a rhythm puzzler dressed in boxing shorts. When it all finally clicked I fell completely in love, and it became an every weekend thing for my friends to watch me try and beat Mike Tyson (it took me a few years and I doubt I have it in me now, but that was a true gaming achievement)

I didn't get to play Super until the VC release either, and while I really like it a lot, it doesn't quite fill the same void for me as the other two games; for some reason I don't dig how star punches are handled in it where you basically have unlimited as long as you have your meter up

Probably one of my favorite arcade experiences.

The sound on that machine pops, the bright graphics done in mostly primary colors, the taller cab with the static 'versus' graphic. The bright red plunger for your special punch. Altogether it was a pretty intoxicating mix and hard to walk by ... or walk away from.

In 1985, there was just nothing else like it.

Star Punches in SPO are very well balanced just as they were in other games and still require skill and knowing the fight to use effectively. The whole point of the meter is to reward your skill with an extra offensive tool to quickly do away with your opponents. At least that's how I see it anyway.

Haha, word! Couldn't wait to bust his ass....until I actually got to him. Then I sat there staring at the screen, occasionally dodging too early and stepping right back into his fist. It lasted all of 15 seconds and I just couldn't fucking believe it. Up until that point I had never had a game just turn insanely evil on me. Then I had to fight Macho Man again? What the fuck, I just spent all day trying to beat this cocky bastard! Grrrr...old wounds heal slowly, apparently.

Punch-Out for Wii was awesome, one of my favourite games of the generation. However, it sucks that it was marketed as the enhanced version of the Wii Sports game. Easy for someone unaware of the franchise to label it as shovelware.

I realize that from a purely gameplay point of view the meter basically accomplishes the same thing, and yeah it actually is probably better balanced/more of a useful tool than the star punches in the other games. But I was speaking more about abstract, touchy-feely way of how it makes me feel too powerful, like I'm on equal footing with the opponents instead of being in a David and Goliath scenario. Granted, there are various reasons for this, but the meter is definitely part of it for me. Just makes the game slightly less interesting to me even if it is more mechanically sound and solid than the other two console entries

Still an amazing game though

Love this series. The SNES one is my fav, just cause I can come back to it after a decade and still beat the game. My fingers have its own brain.

Great series. Spent most time on the SNES version, Super Punchout. The controls on the arcade version felt very sluggish to me. Like they responded slow or something. Way better controls/feel on the NES. Sadly I've never played the Wii version, but it looks damn cool.

Super Machoman on SNES was my toughest opponent.

relevant?

I loved the Wii game, even got my brother into it (he only plays COD, AssCreed, "mature" games) and we had a blast with the motion controls. I liked the two-player mode too, with Giga Mac. I can see that being his Final Smash when he's included in the next Smash Bros.

I love the Wii version but some the redesigns irked me a little bit. Mr. Sandman's face isn't squarey enough and Super Macho Man's face is too squishy squished. Soda Popinski and King Hippo's redesigns are top-notch though...

I'm pretty sure they threw a little Reggie Fils-Aime into Mr. Sandman's updated look, haha.

I knew you'd be back!

I see what you mean and that makes a lot of sense. In SPO you don't feel like an underdog like you did in MTPO because of how the looks and feels. Both great gameplay in each right but those differences are quite clear.

Somebody hack Vodka Drunkenski in to MTPO! Soda Pop my ass!!

I think the Nes version is still my favorite. I never got to try the arcade one, always wanted to but never found it anywhere. I live in Australia though, so it's not that surprising!

If you need another dose of Little Mac, he has been showing up in the VGCW. I especially love the remix of the theme they use.

I've never been a huge fan of the Punch-Out series, but I've always found ways to dabble in it.

Don't think I've ever played Super Punch-Out or the arcade games.

I do own the 3DS VC version in case I ever want to play it. Will be picking up the 30 cent version as well. Nintendo really likes to give this game away; it was available as a Club Nintendo award and next it's going to be part of the Wii U VC promotion. The NES version (with Mr. Dream instead of Mike Tyson) really gets a lot of attention.

I'm glad that the Wii Punch-Out is so loved, though. It's nice that a developer can pull off such a faithful but also refreshing remake. I haven't played it myself, but I did play Doc Louis's Punch-Out which was a Club Nintendo platinum prize, and I did beat him after a bunch of tries. Seemed fun. Maybe I'll grab the Wii game sometime since it's a Nintendo Select and can be found cheap.

I was never much of a fan of Punch-Out!! but the Wii version is amazing.

Isn't it odd that there was never a handheld version of Punch-Out!!? Especially on the DS, considering the dual screens of the original arcade.

All of the games are fantastic. The Wii version is so good, yet so underrated. I never finished Title Defense, though. Got about halfway through and then moved on to other games. So hard.

I played Super Punch Out religiously with my little brother, competing for best times long before YouTube existed. Bear Hugger became our obsession. The only benchmark we had was Nintendo Power said he could be beat in under 19 seconds.

I had the top time on every single fighter except for Bear Hugger, and eventually we moved on and forgot. 10 years later, I dusted off the Super Nintendo and resolved to finally beat my brother's record.

I finally figured out how to dizzy BH and recorded a video of my winning time: 18:09

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=brgnOMgK9c4

Youtube was the easiest way to share the video with my bro -- we lived in different states.

Best part -- every once and a while some random YT dingus stumbles on the post and tells me how slow I am.

I love Super Punch Out.

Punch-Out!! for the Wii is one of the very best experiences last gen. It's an excellent, excellent game. I like it at Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! way more than Super Punch-Out!!

If Left Field Next Level Games could do a game based on Super Punch-Out!! for the Wii U I'd be a happy camper. Or the 3DS. Don't care. Just want more Punch-Out!!

Love every installment. One of Nintendo's most underrated IP's. Especially the Wii version. That should have had nostalgia powers like nothing else. Their execution on it was so good.

The best Punch-Out!! related media I have ever seen are a aeries of youtube videos by kingdomcarts about the NES game. It was a little like a documentary of him discovering the speed run community, but was an amazing breakdown of the game and all the crazy strategies people use. It completely blew my mind.

He never finished the series, and recently the videos have been flagged as private on youtube. He just kind of disappeared without a trace, I'd be very curious about what happened to him, and also if anyone out there has access to those videos.

My description doesn't do it justice. The videos were outstanding.

From the NES, to the SNES, to the latest Wii version, I think they're all great. It's crazy how many strategies there were to beating these things quickly and efficiently. Reacting on just a small tell, a pixelated wink, the timer of the round. One of Nintendo's hardest franchises, and one of their best.

Man, I agree with ReXXXSoprano, beating Mike is one of those video game experiences that resonates years later. I can still see his uppercut pattern in my head.

I missed out on the Wii version. Going to buy one now & see how it works in Dolphin.

You got it wrong:

This...this is glorious. ZA WARUDO!

I agree that Punch-Out!! is one of Nintendo's most underrated properties. Those games are all fantastic, and every installment has such rich replay value. I still periodically go back to Super Punch-Out!! and beat it in a sitting. I can't believe the lack of hype for the Wii version!

Unfortunately, I never had the opportunity to play the arcade versions. Some day... Some day...

Also, Little Mac for Smash Bros. U.

We remember things very differently.

This is good timing, i picked up the 3DS virtual console version from club nintendo and planning on spending the afternoon with it. Will post memories & thoughts later, i'm quite looking forward to it having loved the Nes and Snes entries as a youth.

One of my few regrets in never buying a Wii was missing out on a new Punch Out game.
I might pick it up when the compact Wii systems get US released for cheap.

You know, i completely missed the Wii entry other than spending a night with it at a mates place over a few drinks. Will hunt for it next chance i get.

That Wii commercial and theme song, damn.

(that was meant to be an edit to my previous post, not a new one.)

I will be pissed if Little Mac isn't a newcomer in the next smash. He was robbed in Brawl. This shit better not happen again Sakurai.

Only played Punch Out and Super Punch Out (never had a Wii, was too young for arcades).

They were both great, games but I always liked the NES version more. It just seemed to have a little more personality.

Speaking of the originals characters damn near borderline racist! Not that it's necessarily a bad thing cuz like I said it had personality, but I definitely remember it being toned down in Super. Has the Wii version been sanitized of that? I don't see any modern mainstream game trafficking in stereotypes like Punch Out ever again.

The stereotypes were definitely still there in Super Punch-Out!!. And they are absolutely still there in Punch-Out!! for Wii.
Including a new gay stereotype!

Well there's only one brand new character in Wii Punch Out--Disco Kid, who is extremely.. "flamboyant". Ahem. So yeah, they didn't tone it down a whole lot, lol.

Super is the best game in the series.

Also, I don't know if I just suck now, but PunchOut Wii is hard as hell.

This thread got me curious, so I did some digging.

Princess Peach was supposed to be a fighter for a while!?!

Would've been ballsy.
