Punch-Out!! Let's talk about it!...!

Maybe this is blasphemy, but I never quite got Punch-Out!! I never owned it on the NES and never even played the SNES version.

All that changed when Next Level Games released the Wii game. All of a sudden, the quircky appeal of the series' characters was made apparent, and I fell in love. From the buttery smooth animations to the casual racism to the brilliantly unfolding story progression over several different game modes, that game was just perfect. I've loved Next Level Games work with Nintendo properties since the first Strikers and I have high hopes for Luigi's Mansion.

Lock these guys down, Nintendo! I want them working on a Wii U game like yesterday.

Arcade, the others suck - Super Punch Out (arcade one) was the best

Same here. I was really hoping the SNES version would have all the scaling graphics of the arcade games, but when I got the cart home, I was really let down. The music and sound effects of the SNES version sounded really hollow as well, which is odd when compared to how crisp arcade game from 1984 sounded.

Did anyone here play Teleroboxer?

It´s a fantastic game and you will like it if you liked Punch Out.

Also I have another (or two) recomendation for you if you are into these kinds of games.

Battle Clash or the superior Metal Combat are two extremely fun games which reminds me a lot about Punch Out even though you play them with the Super Scope.

The concept is similar in that you have to recognize and memorize patterns to defeat your enemies. I was blown away by Metal Combat at least!

I LOVE this series. I have been obsessed since Mike Tysons Punch Out on the original NES. Got up to Super Macho Man and could never beat him. I can knock him down twice in a round than I would choke. I need to get my revenge.

Super Punch Out is my fav of the series. I just love the music, style and overall weird randomness of the entire cast of characters. My only problem was that the last boss was kinda lame and generic design wise. Would have been cool if Mr Dream was the final fight. Overall this game was amazing.

Punch Out Wii was great as well. I got about halfway through title defense mode before I threw in the towel. What a tough game that I need to revisit sometime soon.

I never had a Wii but always wanted to play Punchout, as a kid I loved Mike Tysons Punchout so much!! Now that I have a Wii U I need to grab the Wii Punchout, ive seen it in Walmart for $20

Probably one of my favorite arcade experiences.

The sound on that machine pops, the bright graphics done in mostly primary colors, the taller cab with the static 'versus' graphic. The bright red plunger for your special punch. Altogether it was a pretty intoxicating mix and hard to walk by ... or walk away from.

In 1985, there was just nothing else like it.

I can't believe this is not on 3DS VC.

TAKE MY MONEY NINTENDO!!

The first Punch Out was on Street Fighter 1 levels of bad controls.

The rest were great. I'd still get down on the original though, flaws and all.

Remember that arm wrestling game and Bald Bull was a hudden character?

Never fails to crack me up.

Next Level's game was one of my favourite experiences on the Wii. Polished, fun, and full of challenge, it even used motion controls in an enjoyable way. It was pretty much the perfect game for me.

Such a great track

Punch out!! NES was great, but a little too hard as nails for my taste.
I felt Punch out!! Wii was, bar Skyward Sword, my game of the generation. So good, perfect balance between frustration and challenge with pure triumph upon victory. And also how each character has an amazing personality and it was just an instant classic for me.

NES Punch-Out was one of my favorite games of all time. Didn't beat Mr. Sandman until I was in college, that guy was SO TOUGH. Wii version didn't really connect with me but I'm on a big Wii kick right now so I should bring it back out.

Although my favorite NES game is Mega Man 2, one could make a VERY convincing argument that Punch-Out is the best NES game of all time.

Super Punch-Out was awesome and the Wii version was perfectly executed with a perfect combination of gameplay, nostalgia and challenge for both new and veteran players.

Great franchise. I haven't had a chance to play Punch Out Wii yet.

You really should, the games great. It was my first punch out and some of the most fun I had on the Wii was sitting back with a friend and taking turns trying to beat all the fighters.

Just keep in mind god damn it's still tough!

Punch-Out!! was hard when I was like, 7. Back then SMB was hard, too, but that's because I was a kid.

I find it hard to believe that people who play video games regularly would have trouble beating that game today. You memorize the pattern once and it's over.

Love the games, just a little surprised that people classify the NES game as hard. Title Defense on the Wii was way harder and still very doable.

Don Flaminco can easily be beaten by anyone!

Give him a punch and dodge his counter then left, right, left, right, left, right, left, right, left, right, until he dies!

:D

Indeed. After getting that initial process started, he can literally be beaten with one's eyes closed.

His second encounter is a bit more of a challenge (or at least not as repetitive), but still.

Also, surprised this hasn't been posted yet:

007 373 5963

I think there are plenty of people who still have those numbers permanently ingrained in their memories.

I assume he meant the 2nd fight. I've had that one go to decision in the past.

Love the Punch-Out series.

Was never big on the arcade editions and was lucky enough not to be able to hear the annoying announcer in arcades (Body blow! Uppercut! Uppercut!).

NES Mike Tyson's Punch-Out is the best. A perfect level of challenge that is still fun even after you know all the patterns. The cast is awesome and Tyson being the last boss makes things extra special (Nuts to Mr. Dream).

I'm a big fan of SNES Super Punch-Out as well. The updated super system is fun and the improved graphics and sound are great. Yea, the SP is waaaayy too easy, the cast isn't as cool and it goes a little too far out of the realm of boxing - legally getting jump kicked in the face, smacked with a stick or balls thrown at you... - but the Time Attack saves the whole experience. Finding all the tricks that will bring down these guys super fast is tons of fun and the system seems a lot more flexible, making finding said tricks more enjoyable.

I liked Punch-Out Wii as well, though after completing it I never went back. Despite the extra modes and such, I've never had that urge to replay it over and over like I did the previous two. At the very least, it's a solid remake of NES Punch-Out and I'm happy they brought back the original Little Mac design. I would love a 3DS port too.

For those that may not know, "Fight Night Round 2" on the gamecube includes a full version of Super Punch Out. I just picked it up from gamestop for $1.50.

One of my most beloved NES games. Never managed to beat Tyson. I got to the point where I could consistently "go the distance" with Tyson, but I'd always lose by decision anyway. I remember renting the Rocky flicks on Friday and then watching them in order, and I'd always be so pumped for Punch Out! after watching each of the movies. Super Punch Out! just never captured me in the same way.

I played it recently on my brother's 3DS and I was shocked that I couldn't get past Soda Popinsky.

Super-Punch Out!! is one of my favorite games of all time. The gameplay is a huge step up over the original.

I couldn't get into the Wii version since they gimped everything and went back to the style of the first game. Boo.

I hate for Super Punch Out is mindblowing.

It has more of everything that made the original great. More characters, more moves, some of the best graphics you'll see on the SNES, just plain awesome. It also controls better than the original and the visual cues for fighters aren't cheap.

It's a hell of a lot better than the Wii game.

Fully agree. They even took a further step back and took out the ability to cancel the dodge animation by hitting the opposite direction.
I think Wii Punch-Out!! is highly over-rated.

Super Punchout is the best in the series, followed closely by the NES one. The arcade ones are awesome, but are extremely difficult and play much more loose than the console counterparts.
But anyone who may be interested in a Virtual Boy(god forbid), or at least has access to one, Teleroboxer is the spiritual successor to Punch-out and is hard as nails. A worthy challenge to anyone who considers themselves good at Punch-out.

I loved all the punch out games, never got to play the arcade rendition though - none of my local arcades carried when I was a kid / teenager. Super is probably the one that I hold the highest only because I dedicated so many hours upon hours beating the shit out of every single boxer. I really hope Nintendo has a new one up their sleeves for the Wii U with all new challengers this time. Little mac deserves his comeback.

I actually love that about it. It makes you commit to what you are doing. Also, Title Defense mode is by far the hardest run in a Punch-Out game for me, and a balanced kind of difficulty at that.

Different boats I suppose.

You would only think Wii Punch-Out!! is overrated, if you like much more Super Punch-Out!! than NES Punch-Out!!
As someone who finds Super the worst entry (not bad, only worst of the good), you can see why I love what Next Level Games did. Same with people you think that overrate the game.
Super is the easiest game by far, the no rounds, and no character intros and dialog, with the inmense amount of clones makes the game just good for me, becuase it mostly takes all the charm anc charisma of the original.
Just to name, how shitty were Aran Ryan and Bear Hugger in Super, and how good and different characters are on the Wii one.

Yeah, really loved the Wii game. One of the best games in the console's lifetime, I think - maybe even better than the original. So much love and polish in there.

I'll be honest, when I first turned on Super, I was kinda turned off my the lack of smoother animations. I got over it, but it still isn't as smooth as I would have hoped. Even back then. That is the only issue I had with it.

does anybody remember those super in depth NES punch out videos, (youtube?) This guy brought up the convential thinking of how to play but proved us wrong? An example being that you do more damage if you use counter from a certain side and just really articulate things like that.... I can't find em

I'm glad to see that GAF for the most part has correctly identified Super Punch Out! as the best of the home versions.

I'm pretty sure a large part of my brain is still dedicated to memorizing all those patterns and counters.

Super Punch-Out is also way too easy and the super punch system is overpowered. The stamina and star system in the NES game may have been limiting, but they required the player to put a lot more into the game, and the NES game was better for it. The only way to get challenge out of the SNES game is to go for fast times.

I agree with SpacePirate Ridley. It's a good game, but it's easily the worst console Punch-Out game.

They were brought up earlier in the topic. They were made by a guy called KingdomCarts, but he never finished the series (he only got up to Bald Bull 2) and later made all the videos private so no one could see them. It's too bad, because it was an awesome video series.

Kingdom Carts.

As soon as this thread popped up I immediately searched for them but it appears that he made all his videos private in a huff or something.

He never did finish the series. I really wish I had saved them, they were amazing, well instructed, great videos.

Thats not entirely fair. The Wii version only has 1 new character so you cant give the Wii version points for a great roster when its just a mashup of the rosters of the 2 previous games.

There is no way Nintendo could have released Super Punch Out with the same roster as the original game. The Wii version gets away with it because its been forever since we have had a Punch Out game. If they release one for the Wii U it will have a lot of new characters, and undoubtedly some will be worse than the characters in the original game.

The only thing i dont like much is taking away that special thing Tyson gave to the game, and putting fucking Donkey Kong.
I dont know, the idea is not good. Tyson is impossible to do now, yeah, would have been better something like...
Its a dream fight in the original, so they could have made a little cutscene of Mac watching a Rocky movie on the TV, his hero, and sleep in his couch. So he starts dreaming and turns out that Rocky wants to see in a friendly match why Mac is so good and won the title.
That would bring:
-A cartoony stallone that would be amazing, even if its only someone imitating his voice.
-An amazing remix of the punch-out!! theme with Going the Distance
-This ending would have blow everyones socks off. Just imagine Rocky losing in round 3 and saying "This kid is good Mike, it reminds me when I was younger!" Holy fuck, chills down my spine.

Super Punch-Out!!, well I dont know, some charisma is lost. Not having a stroyline with a trainer for the Little Mac wannabe is a little bit shitty. And too many fucking clones. Apart from people like Dragon Chan or Hoy Quarlow have to go with their legs and stick out of the ring. I want punch-out!! to be as wacky as it can be, even with guys cheatting like Aran Ryan or Masked Muscle (because they do it while the "referee" is suposedly not looking, and you know they are cheating, so they make good villians), but things like slow special attacks with sticks or kick anyone can see a mile away. Fucking come on!
I also like more the heart gameplay, than the charge your super thing.
Also Nick and Rick bruiser suck as final bosses, no charisma, shitty design, fucking clones.

One thing I do like is the trainers for each boxer, that was good and something I would love to see in a future Punch-Out!! by Next level, but make that you can see the trainer, like for example, Gabby Jay being the first boxer for the next game and having Glass Joe as his trainer, the animation gags and jokes would be sublime.

This post made me cry... So awesome.

I feel the same way, but have you heard of RedTom's Punch-Out Home Page? It's an old fansite that KingdomCarts pretty much got all of his strategies from, as he said in his first video. The website isn't quite as entertaining as his videos were, but his exact strategies are there.

How can you possibly hate on Bear Hugger? I really like the Wii game as well but I would definitely have liked to see a bit more from Super in it. As someone who is completely clueless about actual sports, I've never liked the rounds system. I'm vaguely aware that's it's an actual thing but from a game mechanic perspective it's just an annoyance to me. Also the super bar is a much more straight forward than the star punches. Super is definetly easier than the NES original, but I'm not really sure how I'd place it against the Wii game (until the title defence mode at least).

For those of you who haven't already seen it... Iwata Asks: Punch-Out!!

http://iwataasks.nintendo.com/interviews/#/wii/punchout/0/0

Takeda: Okay. Hello, my name is Takeda, the game designer.
Everyone: (roaring laughter)

Iwata Asks is so good but so weird haha.

Is Punchout Wii a decent little workout/way to get the blood flowing? I usually run or play basketball to stay in shape, but less so during the winter. Might pick up Punchout Wii.

I know this wont be popular here but I actually prefer the Wii iteration more than the Super Nintendo one. I remember renting the Super Nintendo one and being done with it within a few short hours and while I enjoyed it it was done. The Wii iteration just gives you so much to go for. It's not enough that you beat the guy you had to beat him the right way. It's so underrated.

It's not really a fully fledged workout, but it is good if you go for it. My brother and I got winded playing it, and neither of us is completely out of shape. Although that may be because we were overdoing the motions. :P
