Dead Space 3 Review Thread [Up: Embargo Up]

I think the first half of this year is the beginning of the end for them. I doubt DS 3 or TR will set the world alight sales wise, Gears will no doubt sell less then the trilogy.

They just need to look at the success of Minecraft and how it's a game that's all about gameplay.

Or I could be completely wrong in which case gaming is screwed.

Cinematic gaming has just as much of a place in gaming as something like Minecraft. I'll never understand why some gamers want certain types of games to go away simply because they don't like them. Variety is one of the best things about games. Not everyone wants or even likes completely open ended games while others love them. Just as not everyone likes line cinematic games. But they should all exist. And should all (as long as they're quality titles) see some level of success to keep them going.

Bleh another pretty good PC game that's not available on Steam... Thanks, EA. Guess my copies of Dead Space 1 and 2 will forever be lonely.

indeed, I don't give a shit about Minecraft but I ain't telling people that it should die.

The 5 point scale is better than the 10 point scale. Scores are already a lazy way of reviewing things, at least with the 5 point scale the short hand is easier to understand. The most incredible bit of reviewing shit in the world is the 10 point scale with decimals. 8.8 has got to be the most hilarious review score of all time, for several reasons.

Waggly armed idiots is the best description of necromorphs I've ever read.

8's are bad now? Just seems to be all over the place. People acting like it got 5's. Polygon gave it a 9.5, seems that the scores are just heavily dependent on the reviewer for this one.

Most reviews seemed to like co-op, so that excites me.

Some care about what is actually being said more than the scores. And what's being said is what a lot gamers feared: lack of horror environment, linear design, in favor of cinematic/action.

Probably why you are reading so many people on here being down on the reviews.

Sounds like they dropped the ball on the story, which is the part I was most excited about. I'll probably still open my copy when it shows up today - because I have to know for myself - but what a bummer.

LOL my thoughts exactly. :D Well DS3 is a HUGE release so of course it's causing these reactions. Though lets not forget they had stated the pre-orders for this were bigger then ever. Also the demo was dl some insane amount of times. I want to see how this one does sales wise.

has anybody reported differences between console versions?

DS1 was a bit better on 360
DS2 was even visually but 7.1 audio and DS extraction put me in the ps3 camp.

The developers behind those games for me are more intent on raising the bar for story then they are for making great gameplay.

I can pay £6 to go and watch a film, that's all the cinematic experience I need. When I pay £40 for what is essentially a movie that's where I have a problem.

TWD was a great approach to that form of gaming IMO, and the pricing was very fair.

I agree. The problem is gamers aren't getting their deep AAA (or whatever they used to be called last gen and previously) games anymore. I don't want to play 2D indie platformers and while I love games like Crusader Kings 2 I don't want to play a largely menu based game all of the time either. I miss when the big games were actually the best games too.

Ugh stuff like this was exactly what already annoyed me and stopped me from finishing 2. A constant assault of necromorphs accompanying everything you do, just gets tiresome. Well I'm glad in a way, because I feared that this game would turn out getting rave reviews, after which I'd have to buy it again and then justified EA's approach. I won't rain on anyone's parade any further, have fun everyone that does buy it.

Sounds like a lot of games this generation, they make other parts of the game quite good that enemies end up just being something developers shove in your face all the time to extend the gameplay, it's not even just combat though when developers still insist on doing things in 3s, I see you've spent the last 10 minutes fighting people to press a button, but you need to do that 2 more times because we couldn't think of anything else.

I'm playing the game now and let me say clearly,

the love triangle is fucking awful and should never have been in this game

I cannot emphasize that enough.

It is bad, you can telegraph how it'll end up right from the start.

Couple of hours into it. Ammo everywhere, they compensated for this by making the enemies more bullet spongy...the result is a game with more dakka and shooty bits for the hell of it.

The human fire fights were beyond terrible, i hope to god that doesn't return.

And this chicks tits are hanging out, plus the new upgrade system sucks.

Discussions leading up to Dead Space 3's launch did not come without skepticism from its fans. They feared too much action in favor of real horror. Too many jump-scares in place of twisted hallucinations and psychotic events.

I held onto hope. I was confident in Visceral's ability to make an enjoyable game. And they are still great game makers. But the direction that Dead Space 3 took felt confused. Like it didn't know what it was anymore. It became this Frankenstein creation of every bullet point needed to make a blockbuster hit, with some half-assed creepiness that ended up only serving as a depressing reminder of the husk that the series has become with this third title.

I gathered this much from the demo, honestly. I just didn't have fun with it at all. The positive aspects are damned with faint praise, too. Waiting for that $20 tag. :lol at that Kotaku comment.

Resource packs can also be bought using Ration Seals, items brought back by bots that, when saved up -- and it does take a long while -- bypass the need to reach for a credit card.

heh, I'm glad Sterling touches on the audacity of the microtransactions and their intrusive nature to the immersion, even if they are optional.

So pleased someone has noticed this. It's absolutely ridiculous, that moment. Really couldn't believe it.

I guess I'm just not keen to noticing things like that. I didn't even pay attention to her tits whatsoever. It wasn't till someone mentioned it on here I went back and said... ohhh damnnn. lol

I like well written stories and i like cinematic games when they have a good story like Heavy Rain.

But the problem with triple A cinematic games is, that they all try to be a Michael Bay movie.
And the second problem is, that this trend turns series like Dead Space into Michael Bay movies and that is a bad bad thing for variety in triple A game and for gamers that set value on wll written dialogs and stories.

Nah, they don't keep doing it, but that one scene is absolutely stupid.

Her character is the one I liked least, actually.

Why the fuck is there a love triangle?
"Hey guys, we need to develop this relationship some more, how about we shove someone else in the mix randomly because heaven forbid people just get together or don't without another love interest to screw everything up?"

That's not Ellie is it, tell me they haven't screwed up one of the better female characters in recent memory for big boobs and a love triangle?

Nice spin, EA.

Dead Space 3 Launches Today to Global Critical Acclaim – Heralded as One of the Best Games of This Generation

...

Dead Space 3 is an International hit having received a 9.0 from Multiplayer.it in Italy, 9.0 from AusGamers in Australia, 8.8 from 3DJuegos.com in Spain and a 9.75 from Game Informer magazine in North America. As a result of these four, the game is launching with an average score of 91, and being raved by Game Informer magazine who said Dead Space 3, “[is] one of the best games of this generation.”

Fair to assume those reviews were allowed to be posted pre-embargo due to the slightly higher review score? Classy if true.

Sterling's review was particularly interesting to me since he has been a big fan since the original yet raged hard about some of the changes EA has made.

Gamereactor DK/UK/ES/IT review is the same: 6/10.

Pretty convincing points from my colleague, IMO (including the love triangle criticism). Will try the game tonight though.

Like I said above, not every game is for everyone. Everyone has their favorite genres and other genres that they don't particularly care for. You don't seem to care for cinematic-style games, and that's perfectly fine. But I still don't see why you'd want an entire genre or style of game to go away. There's plenty of variety out there without having to kill off something like cinematic games.

But this obsession with cinematic game design is killing variety in the AAA sector though..

But this happens anytime something becomes popular. It's a copycat industry. In the the PSone generation we saw an unbelievable number of 3D platformers, survival horror and RPG games released. Those were the most popular genres in that generation, so a lot of companies were trying to make some quick cash off of them. In this generation the big genres appear to be FPS, TPS and cinematic-style games. So everyone tries to copy the most popular games in those genres.

Some people blame Activision for what's happened to FPS games. But what do they really want from Activision? To kill CoD? It's not their fault that publishers would prefer to play copycat instead of actually coming up with something unique to compete with CoD in that space.

Seems as if a lot of the things I was worried about really are an issue.

I'll still give it a shot to decide for myself, but what a bummer.

Sons of b#*^%s, why? As a straight male I am getting really tired of over sexualised females in games at this point, especially when they weren't beforehand.

My reaction to the scene with her breasts was literally: "Seriously? FUCK, we can do better than this!!".

I really enjoyed Sterlings review and thought he hit the nail on the head regarding the currency system etc.

Im still so on the fence about purchasing. Even with a couple GS coups I wont be spending the full 65, but still man....waves and waves of Necros, a convoluted upgrade system, Ellies model is fucked up, there's an unnessecary love triangle, a Gears-lite half assed cover system.. At this point I'm only really interested in seeing how it looks and how it sounds. I kind of feel obligated to see how the story ends since I'm such a fan of the series, but I dont know. This is a tough call.

The audio is some of the best I've ever heard in a game. Throwing on some decent headphones, it's absolutley incredible.

Seriously, the audio design team at Visceral deserve a lot of praise.

Amazon still has the $20 credit so it's a good deal instead of waiting for a $20 cash drop.

Hrrrrg this just makes it harder for me since I have yet to experience a Dead Space game with my Turtles on.

This is such bullshit, games are NOT more simplistic than they used to be. Name me a top-selling title from last gen in the action/TPS genre that was so much "deeper"?

Realistically, the most direct inspiration for the DS franchise is RE4, a game that is full of set-pieces and QTE's, and has no more depth to its systems or characters or story than any of the DS games.

What kind of bugs me though its not just that the past is viewed through rose-tinted spectacles, its that the present is constantly viewed through a shit-stained prism of whininess.

Sorry to vent, but the "good old days" were just as flawed as the present. People just weren't so hard to please back then.
