I definitely agree with you. But it sure is asking a lot for people to expect Sony to change the analog layout just because they are more familiar with the opposite design. What about everyone who thinks the DS feels more natural? Sony isn't going to abandon them. Btw its nice to have civil conversation...it seems rare lately.

Why not, Nintendo does it all the time. From three handles to assymetrical, to only one optional stick to symmetrical. Why shouldn't Sony just try to look what works best.

Am I the only one who seriously doesn't care if the sticks are symmetrical or not? I'm able to switch between the PS3 and 360 and even Wii U with ease.

Agreed, it really doesn't bother me. The one thing that does bother me however, is the unusable d-pad on the 360.

Trigger shape doesnt really bother me outside of racing games. I dont know how anyone that works for polyphony touched those triggers and didnt say "uhh hey ken.." I want them to change the spongy feel probably more than I want the shape to change, thats the worst thing about the DS3.

I'm curious as to if the weird rims on the sticks are placeholder or not. Seem a bit odd and potentially uncomfortable.

Apart from looking pretty ugly, i was honestly expecting a big revision, not some minor changes to the design here and there.

It's the opposite for me, my fingers rest on R1/L1 naturally (and thumb on stick below dpad/buttons is more comfortable since the stick is higher, the others low). I also don't like triggers and "Oh, but it's like shooting a real gun!" is dumb. I want quick to press buttons, not emulate a gun.

I can understand it for racers, but that doesn't mean all other games should suffer from making triggers the standard shoulder button to use.

Completely agree and I'll back you up on the resting position on controllers I do the same.

Maybe they should add a mechanical adjuster on the triggers that allow you to transform them into a more traditional button?

I want both the Xbox 720 and PS4 to lessen the travel on the buttons on the controllers.

This is a prototype for a reason.

Also: The touchpad isn't necessarily something you'd want to use 'instead' or at the same time as the analog sticks while playing...

I would see it as a complimentary addition to the available inputs.

Assuming the new controller has a touchpad, of course. ;-)

Excellent. Sounds pretty good to me. People will go bonkers a bit anyways until they get to try it for themselves.

Thanks for your view on the hypothetical situation where we have a touch pad ;)

Mmmm yeah, look at those sexy concave sticks. Give it to me Sony! One last plea to increase the length of those grips for those of us with larger hands.

I'm very happy with what we're seeing here overall though. The light bar on the top makes perfect sense, although I'm guessing and hoping it'll see similar support to the Sixaxis feature on PS3. I am a bit annoyed by that speaker grill though... looks like a dust trap which will drive me mad every time I pick it up. Very nice to see what looks like a headphone jack on the bottom of the controller though; hopefully the spot where a mic included in the package plugs in. I'm glad we're still hearing rumors of the Share button as well, that's something I'd definitely like! As long as they fix the shape of those triggers (and we've heard rumors that we have) then I'm thinking we're good to go.

Sure feels like I'm ready to go all in on Sony next gen at this point!

No magnetometer/compass? Wouldn't that just be normal sixaxis, and not even as good as vita or move?

As for the lack of split controller, I expect this is just so you can have default pointer type controls in any games, they'll probably continue to sell move controllers for more specific games that benefit from dual controls.

The magnetometer adds nothing to the move. TTP on the forums even recommends disabling it in the XMB (which you can do) do avoid drifting issues. The Sixaxis has no gyros iirc.

I'm sure its already been said on 44 fucking pages, but they've integrated the move's LED into the pad, and the console itself has cameras integrated?

Thats one awkward game of golf. I'd prefer it if they threw a wand into the package.

Probably has more to do with locating your position in a room rather than using it as a move controller.

I think it would be awesome if I set my controller down on a table and the PS4 automatically recognized the controller is set down and not being used and pauses the game(of course you could always just pause it with the controller but this would negate that need.).

The LED is in the pad.

However in the consumer unit, the cameras probably won't be integrated in the box. As someone said earlier, this is probably done with dev kits to minimise the risk or someone detaching and removing/stealing/leaking the camera equipment.

The increased height of the middle of the controller makes me wonder if that's partially intended to afford easier one-handed wielding of the controller, holding it by the middle. Your thumb would have access to the touchpad for clicking. Thinking here about one handed point-and-shoot etc. The current dualshock is a bit too thin in the middle to hold it like that comfortably.

Maybe that's not an intended use, but I wonder.

I'm more interested in something like: the console asks you about your tv screen size, resolution (this could be done by the console itself) and based on the distance the controller is located from the tv, text and menus gets resized automatically for a better viewing experience.

If it has multimedia features, web browser, etc it's important that text is clearly visible.

Now that is a awesome idea, but beware people don't like you saying the PS4 is a multimedia device apparently.

Personally I wouldn't mind if the final ps4 looked like the devkit but in black. Would look like stereo equipment if it was black.

I can switch between them just fine, but that doesn't mean I don't have a preference. Stick placement tech has advanced since 1997.

Proper gyro controls for shooters like in golden abyss. I would like that.

I like it. Ergonomically it will be completely different.

Feature wise it excels I think. Move compatibility, possible cameras, mic, possible headphone jack, touchpad. Ticks all the boxes.

that used game/narc'ing controller was brilliant

man i hope we dont shed either start or select, those are proud controller traditions!

Or proper gyro controls for shooters like in golden abyss.

Hngh.

That and using the glowball for pointer controlls, even if it is just for light gun games sans lightgun, would be awesome.

Action games and tps are okay with dual sticks, but playing a fps on console is just awkward. Gyro aiming for fine tuning would help, but I want an even better solution. TTP has this enormous thread about KZ3 with move, I'd like to try that, but I don't have a move and getting it for just one game? I dunno.

Btw, if that is really the devkit, the final console should be pretty small, right.

It's kind of crazy how they just keep grafting stuff onto the original PS1 controller. Hopefully the final design is at least a lot more ergonomic than the dual shock has ever been.

I like this mock up better. Gizmodo are using this on an article.

from the EyePad Patent

What I find more interesting is the 2 cameras next to the touch screen.
According to the patent its there to register hand movement above the controller opposed to waving your hands around in front of the tv in kinects case

evidence from the leaked image supports this patent, since you see 2 black blocks next to the touchschreen.

Not sure if I'm seeing the benefit a touchpad will bring, cant think of a good gaming experience I've had with one.

This is what I've been assuming since the first rumors about the touchpad. It's for doing tasks where a laptop style touchpad would be more useful than analog sticks. Like browsing web pages, menus, etc..

this plus glasses: imagine a basket game in which you see the ball in front of you over the dual shock, you take the ball and score the basket...

Didn't read the thread but I just wanted to say I am really happy they sticked with DualShock design.

It's a timeless classic, there was no need to changing it and I am glad Sony did not.
