I don't think in any way could someone classify H4 as bad. However, I am surprised when longtime Halo fans give it a free pass when some of the staples of what make Halo so great are gone.

I had the exact opposite reaction personally, I read the books and lore going into Halo 4 so the changes to Halo 4 conformed with how I wanted it to change so it would become more like the lore and the books.

Halo 4 went in a better direction then where bungie took halo reach IMO... specifically the multiplayer.

I consider myself a pretty big Halo fan and I quite enjoyed Halo 4. Haven't played in a couple weeks, but the multiplayer is a lot of fun.

Thats why you liked it so much. The story was a complete disconnect for me because I couldn't follow what in the world was going on at any given time. It reminded me of the time I had to go see Twilight with my wife(shudder never again!) and I was like what the hell is going on here! To which she replied "You have to read the books"

Absolutely but it fell really short of H3 for me.

Now your in console bias mode where you start making believe stuff based on your perception of the console.

Halo 4 is the fastest selling Halo in the history of the console. When it did 4 million in the first four week MS new they had a huge hit on their hands.

You pretending Halo 4 is 'bad' matter to what may end up easily an 8-9 million sellers for MS has zero bearing on no indication that future installments will 'suffer' since the fans who love the game are looking forward to the next one.

In fact, it will be one of MS biggest system sellersin terms of games when it releases.

I never said it wasn't the fastest,i said it is on decline in comparison to the other halo games. first month was lower than halo 3 and reach and the legs dont seem as long wither. I know it will be around 8-9 million but that is declining. Halo 3 did 13 million. How is that not a decline?

It isn't on pace at all and definitely won't sell the most. On npd it shows decline and in the chart track sales as well. It debuted less than reach sales in uk. I am not saying the ip is dead but it isn't what it used to be by far. I am definitely willing to give 343 another chance and see how things go with Halo 5.

It's selling those blockbuster numbers that you are in denial about. It released the week before COD and just like Reach it's going to sell all the way through 2013.

Halo fans are still playing Sparton OPs daily and the game will be in the top 3-5 for a forseeable time in the future.

In my opinion, your completely mischaracterizing what your perception is vs. what happening in reality.

COD is the top franchise for both consoles by far, but Halo is the top sellling hardcore exclusive this gen and no hardcore exclusive series has even come close to the success it's had.

No other hardcore exclusive game this gen has the thousands upon thousands standing on line at midnight every release. It's a testament to how anticipated the franchise is.

343I created an epic campaign and the multi is getting better every update. As a Halo fan since the launch of the original Xbox I can't wait to see what they do with all the new power of next gen.

just curious, what didn't you like about reach in terms of direction?

Loved the end of Reach though. Actually teared up a bit in the end. Seeing that letter from Bungie was brutal.

I could be here all day explaining why reach was a step in the wrong direction after halo3/odst

Yea ODST story was good, the title update fixed a bit of it though

Where did i say it wasn't a blockbuster? Of course it will sell on the name alone that bungie built for years. it's still down though, that is my main point. already number 4 on xbl when halo always was at the top in the past. it should be at least number 2 but it isn't. GT 5 sold more than reach and they released the same year. not sure how strong the brand is.

I am curious,i also didn't like reach i just wanted to see what it was. I think 4 is in a way worse direction due to it stripping off what made halo unique.

It's definitely not a bad game. But it's also not great. Serviceable is more damning praise imo than calling it bad.

I was not aware we even knew what cards were in the Sony dev kits.

And either way, we know most of the final specs now so its not like they matter anymore :p

If you are developing on more powerful hardware, the games by default will look better. You will see a noticable down grade between E3 and launch when retail units hit for the Microsoft machine. Sony's will upgrade, but I am trying to prepare GAF for the eventual meltdown when the Xbox games look substantially better.

Well when you say it ha.

What would that be?

Fair enough for you but I found the singleplayer amazing and the multiplayer really fun.

The large expansive fights are....gone. The giant Tonka Truck level felt like a mashup of two levels from Reach and H3 and while being technically BIG didn't give you a whole lot of creativity because: AI was much easier to deal with than any Halo game I have played as well. I only played it Co-Op but for instance in Reach it took me and my brother hours to get out of the first open area with the 4 Elites. HOURS, and that involved flanking and timing your plasma shot just right. All that team strat is gone in 4. We breezed through that game on legendary it just kind of felt empty.

You are talking Halo 3. It sold 8 million copies in a time when the 360 had 11 million. That's right do the percentage. It sold for 3 years straight mostly close to it's original price. But comparing Halo 3 numbers lifetime to Halo 4 which has average a million a month is ludicrous.

MS usually releasesthe series in September where it sells unscathed for a few months befor COD arrives. This time it came of the first week of November, but it still was 4 million the first week of December, which pushed the series over 50 million.

Again you can spin decline all you want, you can pretend it's bad and it il effect future games all you want, but all of that is straight opinion and every indication is it's console bias fiction.

Fastest selling, still charting, still a success and the brand is still strong. But, we now live in the age of COD as well, and even the once mighty Halo won't sell as fast as that retail monster.

I'll be blunt I personally think 343i is the best thing to ever happen to Halo, I personally think Bungie was actually starting to hurt the franchise more than anything.

Large and expansive I can get although I still think there were some quite large battles in Halo 4, I'm guessing the way they were pushing the hardware with Halo 4 restricted battles of the size we would have wanted. Hopefully new hardware can bring back these larger battles and more expansive landscapes.

There is nothing really unique about being hard but I can understand that you felt it became too easy even on Legendary.

Halo was never built to be a teamwork game the entire premise of the game was lone wolf with co-op thrown onto it.

The 360 has 0 exclusives worth playing, IN YOUR OPINION. Please quit stating you opinions as if they are facts.

fantastic reading skills.

I didn't say the 360 has 0 exclusives worth playing. I said that in one year they didn't have any.

And it still outsold the ps3 in every month, despite the ps3 releasing exclusives in almost every month.

Can't wait for the meltdown after the durango reveal.

Don't think so,developer will mostly test it in beta devkit/final devkit first before they show the trailer.

I will say that a lot of the design decisions that I didn't agree with came from how beautiful the game looks. They just had to sacrifice a lot more than I thought. That being said I am really excited for what they do with the series on 720 with those limits gone.

GT5 did not outsell Reach at all. In fact, find GT5 in those charts after the first few weeks. People saw the shipped numbers and from PD and claimed it sold astronomical number in the first week.

The fact is Bungie, MS nor most any gaming developer keeps updated shipped numbers on a website. PD does, but as big as that Series is, Reach outsold it.

XBL changes week to week. Halo , nor any game on the planet can compete with Call of Duty fans who repeatedly are prestiging. That's the draw of COD and why we all play it the amount we do. The Shooters RPG.

But on top of that Minecraft is another great game that has gamers on Live for hours upon hours zt a time. There is nothing wrong with being in those positions as a Halo game.

You can keep reaching but the game will still be on XBL charts top 5 for most of the year.

Strangely I really feel that now. I also didn't feel that they needed to arbitrarily fit in specific level designs from the past. I wasn't bothered by a tighter gameplay area because from how I played the game and the locations I just didn't feel that they would have fit.

Name a year where the 360 had zero exclusives.

Halo 3 came out when COD 4 turned huge and had word of mouth. Halo is still in decline ever since halo 3. Reach was less and halo 4 is even lesser. Tell me how that isn't decline.

It’s really puzzling to me why so many folks think that Microsoft are the heavy favorites for this upcoming gen. In my mind, Sony are the favorites for next-gen. Especially when you look at the facts.

The PS3 is currently well on its way to passing the 360 in total worldwide shipments and it will probably happen this year. When the dust settles from this current gen, PS3 will most likely end up with more global marketshare than 360. (Wii = #1, PS3 = #2, 360 = #3).

And this will have been accomplished despite $599, shitty ports, "haz no gaemz" and most importantly, being on the market for a full year less than the 360. What this means is that while Xbox might be the bigger brand in the U.S. right now, Playstation is still the biggest brand worldwide.

In the current gen, with their utter incompetence, arrogance and stupidity, Sony managed to hand Xbox a big price advantage, an easier system to work on and a full year head start with the next-gen market all to themselves. Despite all of this PS3 will still likely beat 360 this gen (strictly in terms of global marketshare, not in terms of profitability or overall success/failure, which are completely irrelevant to the point I’m making.)

This time, things are very different. Their console is developer friendly with no expensive/exotic parts and there definitely won’t be a year separating the two launches. They might have a price disadvantage to MS due to the higher specs, but it will in no way, shape or form be anything remotely like $599 vs $399.

If they still manage to beat MS in terms of global marketshare this gen when they did absolutely everything wrong, what do you think will happen now that they seem to be doing everything right?

Of course the big intangible will be whether MS has a huge new idea that will become the next Wii and capture the casual and non-gamer audience in the same way the Wii did. But that sort of thing is very difficult to predict.

I fail to see where you're going with this. Those are all minor oscillations, it's really a moot point when each mainline game still sells by the truckload. It would be like claiming that Gran Turismo has been declining since GT3 - which is technically correct, but the brand still hasn't lost its power, and it doesn't seem like it's going to anytime soon. The same applies to Halo.

And while GT5 may have sold more than Reach (I don't know, I didn't check), that's really not the least surprising since GT fans have been waiting for the next full game for five years (and unlike FPS players, racing sim fans on PlayStation really have no alternative). Halo fans, on the other hand, have been well catered to, and they still buy millions and millions of every mainline release.

Yeah but tighter areas are done better by other games. I even think KZ2 does focused corridor shooting better than Halo. Where that series shines is the sandbox of opportunity big open areas affords you. Especially co-op. Halo 3 co-op was one of the best moments of this whole gen.

Loved the end of Reach though. Actually teared up a bit in the end. Seeing that letter from Bungie was brutal.

But yet you have 5 in this page alone. Double standard much?

I agree 100%, when it came to reach it felt like bungie just released it to fulfill there contractual duties instead of giving it 100% of there dedication like 3/odst(moreso 3)

Everything is done better somewhere else on something else during some other time. I am talking about Halo 4 and what I liked about it and what fit narrative wise and logistically for me as a gamer. I don't like squeezed in levels for no reason. If that is what they wanted to show, and it seemed to fit to me, that is fine with me because I loved the result.

Only thing i am trying to say is that is is in decline. xbl top 10 has it at 4 already. Halo was enormous earlier this gen.

I completely understand that but I am used to that feature in other games you know. No one, absolutely no other developer touches on the open area gameplay like Bungie did. Its one of the hallmarks of the franchise and is just for me personally the best single gameplay feature of this series. I apologize if it sounds like I am arbitrarily crapping on peoples opinions I was just trying to explain where I was coming from.
