Each month, a member of the iOS GAF community will host a new thread for the chronicling of new game releases, rumours, discussion and petty personal attacks that have come to define the fast-moving world of iOS gaming.

The OP will contain a list of all the best new releases for that month as they come out. This way we get to keep tabs on the best games and you (yes you), the mythical unicorn known as the iOS Novice will have an excellent resource to look back on to find games you may have missed.

Also keep an eye out for the ‘GAF iOS Challenges’; events where GAF members battle it out on the Game Center leaderboards of a chosen game for both fame and fortune (prizes donated by generous members of our community).

Without further ado, let’s do this!

A non-exhaustive list of iOS games that released both towards the end of the previous month and games that have released during the current month so far -- games which have been highlighted by the GAF community in one way or another. Feel free to post feedback on this list in the thread.

Trailer

Temple Run 'clone' - play as Sonic the Hedgehog as you dash, jump and spin your way across stunning 3D environments. Swipe your way over and under challenging obstacles in this fast and frenzied endless running game

Trailer

Trailer

Trailer

Many years after passing away, the King rises from the dead with the same old goal: Get more gold pieces!

Using a unique combination of role playing elements and slot machine mechanic, battle your way through more than 50 enemies in a quest for more gold pieces and more loot!
Get more and more powerful loot as you progress. Equip your loot to customize the outcome of the slot machine. Pick from 7 zombie classes, each with different weapon mastery and a unique play style. Combine any 3 of them as you see fit throughout the game.

Trailer

You are a marooned space traveler whose ship has crash landed on a mysterious alien planet and must navigate through beautiful but perilous environments while fighting bloodthirsty creatures to save your crewmates and escape with your lives.

Use a grappling hook, jet pack, high-tech weapons and awesome powerups – create friggin’ black holes! - to fight through non-linear levels set in explorable, hostile environments.

Trailer

Backflip Madness is a fast-paced, parkour-flavored extreme sports game. Your goal is simple - make tons of spectacular tricks and stunts.

Trailer

Freemium with wait timers. This is the highly anticipated and now controversial second sequel in the Real Racing series. Everything in the game is essentially better/improved upon from RR2/RR1 except now you'll need to fork out $$$ if you want to play it like you may have played RR2 and RR1. General opinion is that this is an excellent game; mired heavily by a freemium business model. The developers have listened to feedback and have been making adjustments since the game's initial release in New Zeeland in mid February.

Eurogamer Review said:
Elegant and artful, Year Walk is an unmissable piece of work - and one that is surprisingly hard to disentangle yourself from once it's done. You can close the app and put down the phone, but the forest may spread beyond its glassy confines, its spindly, silver-skinned trees taking root in your own home, your own dreams. 9/10

Experience the ancient Swedish phenomena of year walking through a different kind of first person adventure that blurs the line between two and three dimensions as well as reality and the supernatural. Venture out into the dark woods where strange creatures roam, on a vision quest set in 19th century Sweden.

The Year Walk Companion is the definitive guide to the mysterious myths and creatures encountered in Year Walk. A mini-encyclopedia to keep handy when playing, or in preparation of your adventure.

Q - Should I buy this new EA game?
A - Maybe. While most older EA titles can be seen as hot garbage, we can't predict the future. Just be aware that EA has a tendency of sales where even recent titles can be a dollar/euro rather than premium $4-5. Spend your pack of gum money wisely.

Q - I just got an iPhone/iPad. What are the best games?
A - Best iOS Games Ever v1 / Best iOS Games Ever v2. You're welcome.

Q- For gaming, should I get the iPad Mini, or iPad 4?
A- Both have their pro's and con's. Mini is cheaper, and arguably a better grip for gaming, but the screen isn't as great and the device is less powerful than the 4. Most games these days all run fine on it, but I'm not sure about in a year.

Q- I'm a new iOS user, what non-gaming apps should I get ASAP?
A - This thread would be a great place to start. Asking here wouldn't hurt either!

Q - How do I back up my game saves for games that do not support iCloud save games?
A - Use a file manager program such as i-FunBox (PC/Mac versions available) - It's free and requires no jailbreak.
i-FunBox has a ton of different features, but to back up save games you would simply want to do the following:

  • Click the iFunBox Classic tab
  • Connect your iOS device, via WiFi or USB, it should then appear in the Connected Devices list on the left side of the UI.
  • Under User Applications, navigate to the game you want to back up save games for.
  • Select the Documents folder and copy it to your PC/Mac - this will copy the folder and all the contents. This contains your save files and settings for the game (a bunch of .lua files).
To restore a backed up save game simply do the reverse.
  • Under User Applications, navigate to the game you want to restore save games for.
  • Select the Documents folder and choose to copy from PC/Mac
  • Navigate to where you saved the backed up Documents folder on your PC/Mac, open it and select all the files within it and open them. This will copy the folder and all the contents back onto your iOS device.
  • Restart/fully close the game itself and your saves should be back!
Check that the file structure of the game is GameName > Documents > files after you're done (no Documents folder within the Documents folder!), otherwise the game will not recognize your restored saves!

Q - How do I hide my Real Name on Game Center?
A - Ever since iOS 4.3 your real first and last name, taken from your Apple ID, will be shown to your GC friends. If you value that information and want GAF's leaderboards to show your proper GAF nickname instead, here's how you do it:

  • Open the Game Center app.
  • Go to the Me tab and tap the yellow ribbon that has your email written on it.
  • Chose View Account and you'll be prompted for your password.
  • Scroll down to the Edit Account Info section and tap on the Apple ID profile.
  • Change you First and Last name (you must enter both) to whatever you like (e.g. First Name: Tunesmith, Last Name: GAF)
Done, now that's who you're going to be listed as on your friend's Game Center leaderboards. This will affect Game Center *and* your Apple ID. If it's the same account you use for App Store/iTunes (like me), you will still be able to use it for iTunes/App Store's purchases (you can still buy whatever you want like you could before) *BUT* in the receipt it'll show your nickname or whatever you chose as First Name and Last Name when you changed those fields. The first time you will use the modified account on App Store/iTunes, you will be asked to verify the account by re-entering the 3 digits code of the credit card's CCV security code (if you make your purchases using a credit card).

How to Become an Official GAF iOS Game Center Member

The List
Updated: daily (mostly).

#RULES: How to get on the list / Update your profile / Add friends

  • Send Dash Kappei or Tunesmith a PM if you want to be added or taken off the list, following this text formatting:

GAF Name = Game Center Name / iOS Device(s)

  • When you add someone, add From GAF to the friend request and your NeoGAF name as to easily tell who's who.
  • We are on the list and, if you are too, it's OK to add us even if we're not best buddies; don't be shy: we enjoy having more GAFers challenging us on the friends leaderboards.
  • Don't just wait for others to add you first you should at least add some of the profiles posted above yours if you want to get the ball rolling... It's really up to you. Ideally the last member of the list will be the one to add the profiles above his, and so on and on with each new member. Or maybe just add whoever you like, that's also an option.
  • Remember: your real name will be visible to your GC friends
  • You can add everyone on the list at once; click the second sheet on the iOS Membership list and read the instructions, works on iOS and Macs

ibqWs3Y7QVwZBe.png

Thanks to Fuu & Dash Kappei for handling the community list's past/present duties, Dash Kappei for running the iOS Challenges and finally past OT hosts for having done a wonderful job thus far for our community!

...and that's everything for now. This is a live OP and so will change as the month goes on so check back often.

This Month's GAF iOS Challenge dedicated thread

GAF's iOS Weekly Challenge 7: TINY WINGS [DAT PRIZES GENTS! Rob.Kirkman's approved!]

Chosen Game

Tiny Wings

Specific conditions/game modes

- GAME MODE: DISTANCE TRAVELED [so not by score, you can check the specific "Distance" Leaderboard in-game and in Game Center]

Rules
  • To participate you just need the game and to add Dash Kappei on Game Center: (Dash Kappei GAF). As soon as you fire up the game and play it for the first time while being signed in to Game Center, you'll be part of the Challenge. That's it.
Add "From GAF" and your nickname on GAF in your request or Dash Kappei won't add you to friends.
  • Challenge organizer can participate but is not eligible for any prizes.
  • Screenshots of the TOP 20* scores (TBD) will be posted in this specific post and in the specific GAF's iOS Challenge threads that exist for the duration of the challenge, so DON'T add me on Game Center or at least don't compete in the weekly challenge if you don't want your real name to be shown.
You can easily avoid your real name to appear if you follow the few simple steps on the FAQ Section of this thread's OP (first post above) "How do I hide my Real Name on Game Center?".
  • GAFers only, I won't accept requests from non-gaffers. Sorry lurkers.
  • Check the GAF GC members list handled by Dash Kappei if you want to add others, but being on the list isn't mandatory to play the iOS GAF Challenge. If you want to be on the list send Dash Kappei or Tunesmith a PM following this exact text formatting:
GAF Name = Game Center Name / iOS Device(s)
When you add someone, add From GAF to the friend request and your NeoGAF name as to easily tell who's who.
  • Scores are valid only for the "This Week" section on the Leadearboards and those scores made before the challenge won't be counted for the full final results, even if mistakenly counted during the challenge.
  • You can still enter the Challenge even if it has already started, granted that I can accept your GC friend request on time. You can join the contest at any time, even if there's an hour to go.
  • Posting your new scores in the monthly iOS thread is encouraged as well as posting your Game Center profile for others to check on your score when you do so. This is not at all mandatory anyway.
  • If you submit some ridiculousy good highscore you might be asked for proof: take an in-game screen (repeat: in-game and NOT of Game Center's own leaderboards) and post it in the challenge's thread when you die/loose and the game shows the score (grab a screenshot pushing the HOME + Power buttons at the same time). Failing to provide proof might even invalidate your score.
  • If you get caught cheating (messing with Game Center or similar scummy tactics) you can probably kiss your NeoGAF's account goodbye forever.

Our friends at Gamagio and Skybound Entertainment really went all the way to prove how much they love NeoGAF and its iOS Gaming Community!
They've provided us with:
15 codes total for their iOS game The Walking Dead: Assault. There are 13 left and will be given away this way: 10 for the first 10 spots on the leaderboard and 3 with a raffle for all the participants.
But that's just the start: ONE lucky gaffer, winner of the competition, will be awarded as a GRAND PRIZE the Hardcover Volume 1 of The Walking Dead (RRP $34.99) which includes the first 12 Episodes. Yeah, that's not it, because the man himself wanted to be involved, so the volume will be SIGNED by The Walking Dead creator ROBERT KIRKMAN! How cool is that?! Really big, big props to Robert and the guys at Skybound who wanted to be a part of this even if we weren't competing with their own game. Thank you guys, you're awesome!

Check out TWDA and support these kind gaffers' game, it's pretty fucking awesome in my opinion and it reviewed great: it's something you don't see on iOS very often, plus it sports a superb artstyle:

Then you have our kind friends at PikPok and Sidhe who've sponsored so many times with cool swag that I don't know how to thank them anymore. They're offering the #3 place a Steam code for Shatter:

.. and there's something at least as good as the game itself, we've also got 3 codes for the OST for #3, #4 and #5.

It's an "old" iOS game and not within the remit of the monthly OP, however I was thinking of adding a retrospective section/spotlight of sorts that lists some of the still popular older titles, among some other OP refinements, but I'm currently at work so that'll have to wait until later today/weekend. :)

It doesn't seem to have been already mentioned but...I'm really liking Penumbear.
I'm not that into platformers (and I suck at them) but it's really something special.
BEWARE: iCloud sync and device rotation do not seem to work due to a bug (to me anyway).
Other then that it's really nice, with spot on controls.

One game that I think has been criminally overlooked is 14px (even though this is a January release). It's a great, fast paced, Super Meat Boy-esque platformer. Tight controls, challenging levels, great music. The art style is simple but clean. It's worth the $1 if you enjoy platformers.

Just playing RR3 and as I received a picture message, my framerate dropped to single digits. That caused me to crash and cause some fairly extensive damage.

I feel like it was a meta-commentary on the dangers of texting & driving.

Eh, I take great delight from playing games with ridiculous IAPs and not spending a penny. I feel like I've beaten the man, man.

Except Simpsons: Tapped Out. I'll admit to spending about £30 on that but going by 'time played', I've definitely had my money's worth.

FFV might release this month. And the FFT HD update is coming. Square Enix Character Mail is also gonna get a huge makeover near the end of March, and new maps for Crystal Defenders are coming too.

Also, pre-registration for The World Ends With You: Live Remix is now open:
http://games.gree.net/?action=preop...register=twitter_57459&reg_code=GPPO050057459
Players who register now get a "start dash set" when the game goes live in a few days.

Finally, I wanted to recommend Shadow Escaper:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/shadow-escaper/id587291971?mt=8
It's a Temple Run clone released a few days ago made by CyberConnect2, the developers of the .hack series, Asura's Wrath, Solatorobo and many Naruto games, but it's actually way better than Temple Run IMO.
First you choose a character that must escape these angel baddies, they're the monkeys of this game. You play on a timer, once the timer is done so is your day, and at the end of the day your character turns into this huge monster and destroys the angels, the more orbs you collected the more damage you deal and the higher the score you get. After you're done with the day, a new one begins with harder obstacles/enemies and a sped up character. Each day gets faster and harder. The only "bad" thing is that you have Stamina that recovers over time, each time you play a stamina point gets deducted. You start with 15 stamina points but you can upgrade your gauge to get more points.
Screenshots since the iTunes page has those typical ones filled with words all over the place:

Yes, it looks great. And you can still click the picture to see the full size when it is wrapped in quotes, it just makes the page fit nicer.

That first one is amazing.

Help! Does anyone know how many residential floors there on in tTiny Tower, I have googled it and can only find old answers, I really don't want an empty floor sitting on the top of my Tower, I finished all of the business floors, and now only have residential floors left, I currently stand at 183.

Any help would be fantastic!

This may sound dumb but I was wondering if there was a simple (could be updated graphics or w/e) version of Pong that was playable online? Or maybe even an Arkanoid like vs. game?

Friends, is Table Top Racing worth a pack of gum and the precious time it would take to chew it?

What's a good controller for iOS? Mainly for emulators.

I bought an iCade Bitty, but the d-pad is very unresponsive. Pressing a direction isn't enough, you have to press and then apply a good amount of pressure for it to register (almost feels like using one of the rare PS games with pressure sensitive buttons). You have to think about being sure to push "correctly" just enough that it takes you out of the game, defeating the purpose of using a controller instead of touch controls.

The iControlPad looks cool, and the upcoming 2 looks even better, but christ are they expensive.

I think you mentioned in the last thread that Baldur's Gate was updated recently. How are the controls now?

The latest patch didn't do much but the previous one did iron out a lot of the small annoyances like doors and picking up loot and inventory management.

It is better than launch and perhaps getting as close to perfect as it is going to get without redesigning the whole thing.

...,

Btw thanks to the recommendation of 14px above. Really liking it and nice to see a double jump.

However it is quite laggy on an iphone 4, so consider that before buying.

Help! Does anyone know how many residential floors there on in tTiny Tower, I have googled it and can only find old answers, I really don't want an empty floor sitting on the top of my Tower, I finished all of the business floors, and now only have residential floors left, I currently stand at 183.

Any help would be fantastic!

69. 185 floors covers all the currently available floors.
