Monster Games is making Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D

reggie-whats-wrong-with-you-gif.1795

Unless they just did stuff for other companies like Next Level Games in the meantime.

Even if that were true, and I have my doubts, they would have that product listed on their website, or there would be at least some source material that shows their involvement in such projects. Even if it's someone snapping a shot of them from the credits roll.

I don't think they'd hire people from Bioware, Vigil, Naughty Dog, Junction Point and the like just to work on a Mario Kart game.

Well no, of course not. But it wasn't the entirety of Retro working on the classic courses for Mario Kart 7. They merely had a small team assisting EAD for under a year. Outside of that, they've been working on a project since finishing DKCR since the beginning of 2011.

This would make sense, given that Mario Kart Wii U presumably didn't begin development until the beginning of 2012. They probably need help at EAD making some of the 32 courses if Iwata wants the game done by November/December this year.
Retro hired several character designers, as well as a level designer who worked on Modern Warfare, Enemy Territory and many other high profile first person shooters. I don't think they're working on a kart racer. My guess would be Metroid Prime 4 or a new first/ third person shooter IP.

But is the content 100% identical? I don't think we know yet.

We don't know for sure yet, but there's nothing to suggest it isn't.

Plus it's not like Monster didn't have animators before; I doubt any additions they could make would require additional staff (unless they were all working on another project).

I never said they were only helping with Mario Kart Wii U, merely that it's possible they are helping with some of it so that it gets done in time. Presumably, since Retro is now two teams, such work wouldn't have any impact on the production of their own Wii U game.

Huh, they're two teams now? Wonder how they split those people up? Anyways, I think Retro's next project will be Nintendo's Halo competitor.

Have they said anything about the stupid game breaking shake and blow mechanics in this game?

I don't think "game breaking" means what you think it means.

And going by the comparison video, it seems probable it's still in there as the locations of the secrets seems unchanged.

The trailer in the eShop clearly shows the X button being used for the boss beatdown at the end; in the Wii version, there'd be a "waggle" icon and you'd shake the remote to hit the boss. So, it would appear that all motion-based functions have been reassigned to the X button.

Yeah, they've grown considerably in size since 2011. Hiring tons of people, moving into a much larger building, etc. Presumably, it's likely their Wii U game is similar to what you're saying. A sci-fi shooter of some kind, maybe even Metroid-related. Their second team I assume would be a 3DS team, which could also be Metroid-related, since that's one of only a few franchises that hasn't yet had a game for 3DS.

I'm doing it oh so right. Those games were always terrible.
This post... I don't like it one bit. Combined with your avatar, it's interfering with my recurring fantasy where Barack Obama flies through my bedroom windows at night, hovers over my head, and lovingly whispers to me that he agrees with all my tastes in gaming.

I really, really think that Retro is working on Star Fox. But not just a simple shooter.

I think they are Metroid-Priming it.

I think they are too and yeah, it will be a vast adventure/action take on it.

They could be also working on Metroid or a new Ip(my wish) but my hunch always keeps telling me it's Star Fox.

  • Good: Now we know Retro is not working on a remake.
  • Bad: Now we know Monster Games is not working on a new Excite game.

Pretty much.

Though I think I can wait a little longer for a new Excite game by Monster Games. I'm really excited to see Retro making a game in HD.

Hmmm, not a great piece of news simply because that all but confirms 30 fps. I don't have faith that they'll be able to convert the game to 3DS while maintaining the full 60 fps framerate.

Even if this is all Monster Games is doing -- and who knows if that's the case -- it will probably sell more than any original effort.

Should be a 7-8 month port job. Monster Games, hurry to the finish line, then work on something to EXCITE us more.

I forget, does Nintendo own the rights to all the DKR characters? Besides Banjo and Conker, of course, and Diddy Kong who they obviously own.

They do; since Rare had already announced and trademarked both Banjo-Kazooie and Twelve Tails of Conker before DKR came out, those got to stay with them.

Not that it matters all that much since the rest of the DKR cast is some truly forgettable stuff.

I'm not sure it's that simple. For example, Tiptup was in Banjo-Kazooie.

They don't. Only the Kongs and Krunch. Rare confirmed it in one of their blog posts IIRC.

However, they do own the music according to DKRDS credits.

I thought everything that appeared in DKRDS was owned by Nintendo. Banjo and Conker were removed as they are now owned by Microsoft.

At start up (as well as the credits) it says certain characters licensed by Rare. I'm no legal expert but I think the characters were able to appear because they're technically Rare characters as opposed to Banjo/Conker which were in games published by Microsoft (giving them the official ownership)

Retro Studios has about 80 developers in their studio. They could technically handle one decently big HD game and a small 3ds game?

Monster Games only has about 30 developers in their studio, they probably are mainly handling this one 3ds game till release.

Neiteio did mention that Tiptup was in B-K, so that's probably one of them. I can't imagine that all of them are with Rare, though, because what's the point?

Yeah, for Banjo and Conker I think it's more just a thing of popularity. They could actually pass as Xbox advertisements, while no one's going to go out and buy a 360 and B-K XBLA because of...Tiptup.

...

(...well except me.)

EDIT: Also, just so you guys know, Leigh Loveday confirmed in Scribes that Rare DOES own all of the DKR characters that aren't Kongs, Krunch, and maybe Tricky. It has to do with Rare being the publisher of the original game.

All the non-Diddy/Banjo/Conkey DKR characters can burn in a fire. A fire where the odor of their wretchedness will will be seeped into the world for generations to come.

Interesting. That probably bodes well if Nintendo do ever make another DKR, because those other characters fucking stank.

Besides Wizpig and T.T., we need those around still.

Thanks! Didn't know about that!

Oh right, T.T.

T.T. can stay, everybody else can fall of a cliff. ESPECIALLY stereotypical Indian Elephant man

T.T. is just a clock with hands and feet so they could totally make an Original Character Do Not Steal that looks just like him. Call him Chronological Craig or some shit.
