Do you guys think some reviewers are going to mistake the MH3U HD's graphics for being of Wii U quality instead of basically enhanced 3DS graphics ?

Not every weapon has a tree based on each monster, so you might be farming completely different bosses for each one. It's also more fun if you mix it up and farm materials for your Dual Swords with your Great Sword, for example.

And yeah, weapons generally have pretty tame material requirements compared to armor sets.
You say that, but they tend to require the rarest parts. Which is why I gave up on farming for a Volt Axe. Farming one Lagi plate for the armor set was bad enough, I had more than enough of every other part for two sets by the time I got the first plate.

It sucks. Luckily, online can cut that grind significantly. Gaf is here for you!

I don't really have any interest in studying all the intricacies of a game before I play to obtain the ideal character but I'm glad I read up on that charm table business. I'll be just fine with making sure I don't have a cursed table. I hoarded charms in Tri like no other and will probably do the same in 3U just to make fun and unique skill combos. With my luck I'll get a cursed table on my first try. Thankfully I won't put hundreds of hours into the game before realizing.

Lol oh man... I farmed for charms probably for a couple hundred hours easy, no joke. I was just as addicted to finding/obtaining the rarest charms as I was every other aspect of the game... I hate to admit it but it all started when I thought there was a chance a guy could mine for a "ancient LS". Sadly mistaken :( maybe this time??? Lol Can't wait to see what kind of new armor combos can be created though, should be interesting.

I'm currently playing ZombiU non-stop, what kinda GOTY? Over 12h and I have yet to open that nursery area. Wasn't expecting it to be this huge and awesome.

Thanks Ubisoft, now I don't have to keep counting the days until MH3U.

Lagi looks better. Textures have definitely improved, there's self-shadowing, and it looks like he has more/better normal mapping than before. Terrain textures seem sharper too.

Zombi U is a fantastic game. I love the fact that it's slow paced and you have to take a step back to observe the situation and plan. It gets crazy when you have to think quick to survive. Also the Multiplayer is surprisingly fun.

Regardless, I'm playing DS classics to get me by before MH3U's release.

Honestly, I was the same in Tri. I didnt focus too much on charms. I had a few here and there that helped out, but only if they were damn good (like +10 to auto block or +10 to heat resistance). I think this time, since I'm starting fresh, I'll get to know them more.

Is this game good in single player? I'm interested in playing it, but I would be playing single player. Is it enjoyable that way or is it mostly designed for multiplayer?

It's definitely enjoyable in single-player, but it is a lot of fun in multiplayer.

Decisions, decisions. I plan to get the Wii U only after W101 hits but I'm afraid that by then the online community of MH will die out. Is this the case for MonHun Tri on Wii?

This is coming from someone that has not played a single MH game before.

Monster Hunter community is super hardcore, there will be a community for it for years.

No, definitely didn't die out and didn't get small in a matter of only months. There are still thousands playing on the Wii. Monster Hunter games come few and far, so the online community would be strong.

MHTri had a good amount for years. MH3U will most likely be the same I bet.

It's still fairly active, even with the changeover being imminent.

Keep in mind that Capcom kept MH1 alive on the PS2 for well over 3 years in the west, so they know that the fans are pretty damn dedicated. With Nintendo hosting the servers this time around, I doubt you'll see it dying down anytime soon.

The single player is enjoyable and gives you a taste of multiplayer by allowing you to take AI companions on your quests. All the single player quests are of a lower tier difficulty though, if you want to step your game up you have to go multiplayer, or at least that's how the previous games have been.
Does anybody know if all the monsters and quest difficulties will be accessible in single player in this edition?

Everything is available single-player.

The online community for Tri didn't see a dramatic downturn in activity until the past year, IIRC. And there's still around 5-6 hundred people on each night on the NA servers for a 3 year old game.

Ultimate's community may not be as big as Tri's if only because the 2010 Wii userbase dwarves the 2013 Wii U userbase but the cross-region play should keep things fairly active around the clock.

Are we going to set up a noob-MH crew to be shown the ropes by pro-MH GAF?

I wouldn't mind doing runs with GAF. The only thing I absolutely cannot stand however is getting upchucked (not so bad if it's all in good fun) and then players leave to farm material, etc, while the monster's still active.

I don't mind if you farm before for like 10 minutes or 20 because that's alright. Get a breather. But while the rest of us are fighting? Come on man.

GAF has always been good with that though, so I'd love to see a community for people new to the game.

Now that I think back on it, I take back what I said about all the games not having all the content available for single player haha. MHFU gave you the option to do the guild quests solo, which is actually how I played much of the game until I got xlink/convinced my buddies to get PSPs.
It is a little upsetting though that all the content of the original MH was lost with the shutting down of the servers. Bopping Lao and Fatty holds a special place in my heart :p.

Well, i'm excited to be yelled at and die alot. My first real adventure into MH is going to happen on the Wii-U (i couldn't stand MH on the psp..3g i think was the title).

Only do that when a monster leaves an area where you can get some materials.

"While MH3U's graphics are merely an HD upgrade to Wii-level graphics and the Wii U's power should certainly not be judged based solely upon this game, we still find it mystifying that the developers couldn't have created a better looking game if the power was there. It doesn't even run at 60 frames per second!"

Pro-tip to the newbies: PLEASE play offline first. If you have a few decent weapons and armor sets, and you defeat Barroth, then you're ready.

Another super dumb question: how much communication does online require? I really hate having to talk and communicate when playing online, especially with strangers.

You can use text chat if you don't want to use voice chat. Doing at least text chat would be beneficial to everyone in the lobby.

With the multiple controllers usable for the Wii U version but only one compatible with off-TV play (right?), I wonder how seamless it will be to go from the TV to the Gamepad if you were initially using a Pro controller. Would you have to reload your save to switch controllers?

There's like only a 3 second window for one of the table. Can anyone give me the exact steps to get the table I want?

I know I have to set the 3DS/WiiU clock to 2012/1/21

T1 00:14:11 ~ 13
T2 02:14:39 ~ 42
T3 00:11:28 ~ 30
T4 00:05:47 ~ 49
T5 00:56:43 ~ 45
T6 00:42:17 ~ 20
T7 01:43:58 ~ 01
T8 09:25:48 ~ 51
T9 07:09:58 ~ 01
T10 00:14:43 ~ 45
T13 00:07:46 ~ 48
T14 00:17:02 ~ 05

T11 00:02:43
T12 00:06:41
T15 00:08:09
T16 00:13:22
T17 00:20:03

If I want Table 1, I have to set it to around before 14:11. There is only a 2-3 second window to get table 1, so what do I do to get that table? Which screen is it to confirm character creation?

Those times are the times you want to land on when you hit "New Game" so you would set the internal clock BEFORE the time you want to land on so you can be in the window when you start your new game.

I'll second this. And it's actually what I did in Tri as well. I got my full Peco armour set and a good hammer for that stage of the game and took a few tries to get Barroth down and then went online. Also by that time I had a very well stocked inventory so I wasn't a hindrance to people online like some people are when they have no items.

My recommendations of things to do before going online if you are new:
Beat Barroth
Have a full set of armor
Have an upgraded weapon
Have a good stock of well done steaks
Have a good stock of potions and mega potions

Some hardcore people would say beat the whole offline first, but to me that is a bit extreme. Just get to know the flow of the game and the combat, and have some items is what I say.

Yep, I dont think I went online til a after I beat the Barioth, but the game definitely clicked after I took down Barroth.

I'd consider myself a noobie.. But after intensively playing the demo, I've gotten pretty good at the combat aspect of the game.. Have beaten Plesioth with the Long Sword, Hunting Horn, Hammer, Dual Swords, and Sword and Shield.

What I consider myself a HUGE noobie is all the other stuff... crafting, questing, what I'm supposed to do? What items do I get?

ALL OF THAT STUFF IS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO FIGURE OUT BY YOURSELF.
I started Tri on the Wii offline, and I sold it in 2 weeks because I had no idea what i was doing..
This time, I'm hoping the online community will help me figure this stuff out so I can truly delve into this game.

So you telling me to stay offline until I do certain things is worrying...

It still takes a lot since you'll also want an armor set that compliments your weapon type. Some of the earlier armor sets will give you skills that can be decent for multiple weapon types, but later on you're going to want to be working on specializing your skills to your main weapon type.

You're going to want to use the rare drops on armor, not on your 3rd or 4th weapon type in my opinion.

I'm not saying you can't do multiple weapons, but it'll take a lot of materials to keep that up. But then again, that's the whole point of Monster hunter, to kill those monsters many many times. :)

What is nice is that before you set off on a quest, you usually prepare in the "city lobby" before hand. It's a nice time to talk and discuss things (strategy or bullshit) before you set off. So, I prefer keyboard chat there, but voice can still be used. This is quite different from text or voice chat in the middle of a game, whether that be a MH or COD.

Sick!! Nice to see Nintendo and Capcom are here with us in 2013.

I played the 3DS demo last night expecting not to really see what all the hype was about, was pleasantly surprised. I think I understand why Japan was so crazy over this game, it's just too bad online play wasn't enabled without a Wii U. Strange design choice to say the least.

It wasn't a design choice - or at least, they didn't have two games sitting side by side and added a feature to only one of them. The 3DS game came out in Dec 2011 when they weren't even considering online for it because Japan doesn't have to have it, and the Wii U game came out a year later in Dec 2012. It's only strange when they come out at the same time, inviting the comparison.

That seems way too long. I think a full set of Jaggi armor and a Qurupeco kill should be enough to work with.

Personal opinions of how much soloing is adequate vary. What's important to note is that players who are able to solo are more of a team asset than a liability or burden. It's also my personal feeling that players who can solo enjoy more from team hunts.

I don't recall if its featured in MH3U and/or in MH4, but isn't one of the new features to allow players to look at what items other players in the lobby are carrying inside their portable inventory ? If so, then that's a nice change.

The first dozen or so quests you do offline include fairly exhaustive tutorials on gathering materials, combining items, crafting and upgrading weapons/armor, using utility items like barbecue spits, whetstones, paintballs, and traps, and pretty much every other crucial game mechanic. I don't agree with the notion that you have to do a certain amount of offline content before going online, but it does provide you with a very good basis for the rest of the game.
