It sounds like a Quake Arena sequel or maybe Quake Live is coming to Steam with Steam Achievements.

Yeah, Arenas Eternal definitely makes it Quake related, but I'm more inclined to believe it's just an achievement update for an existing game.

But I'm willing to have my mindblown.

Also I've been running QL through a steam shortcut so I can chat while speccing in CA (happens more than I'd like).

Quake Live? That's cool, I was about to have a fan boy freak out for Quake V though.

This is good news. Quake Live just kind of fell off the radar after a while. Being on Steam should get more players into it. Sadly, I doubt any kind of success it sees will be good enough to get id or Epic interested enough in making another arena shooter.

does Cliffy B. not work on a first person arena shooter (edit: and PC only)?

There was a game called nexiuz that released a short ways back that was sort of a spiritual successor to Unreal Tournament and Quake 3, although I'd say more if the former.

Unfortunately it launched with no dedicated servers and the community kind of tanked hard and fast from what I remember. It's a shame since there was some crazy mutators in that game - things purely for fun.
