The Last Of Us - Off screen footage from PAX East

What the hell happened to the shooting?

In the E3 demo, the camera zoomed in tight when shooting and it gave it a great feeling of weight...

Seems like they completely changed it.

Example

Shooting in E3 Demo

Shooting in New Demo

The FOV is slightly larger = Completely changed it?

People freak out easily.

Also, it's a non controlled demo of a dude sneaking around, the people going "looks boring", would prefer another cinematic corridor that keeps throwing shit at you every 5 seconds?

It looks like he's shooting a pea shooter in comparison. Noddydawg pls.

It's a different gun, a less powerful one, probably (as it is automatic).

Beaten like people expectations.

I know it's off screen, but I think Uncharted 2/3 looks better than this
Probably, but there's much more stuff going on under the hood, here.
We're at a point in the generation where you're just gonna have to trade off stuff.

I can't tell any difference. What are you referring to?

E3

New Demo

In the E3 demo the animation is much more organic, in the new one it seems like they just ripped Uncharted's snap to animation system and slapped it into The Last Of Us.

The camera sways in different way with the connection of each hit.

There is snapping in both. The camera might be slightly different but it looks almost exactly the same to me.

Eesh, that looks awful. Teleported to the wall, lol.

I think it's the drab color scheme compared to the lush vivid colors in Uncharted 2

But that's because of the environment and the fact that it's raining outside (dull lighting). We've seen plenty of pictures of lush and colourful environments to show us that rainy/dark environments aren't the only aesthetic in the game. ND will want to vary the colours and so change our emotions accordingly. Christ, ND even said they loved the contrast between natural beauty and the ruins. Don't you think that's a pretty big clue to what to expect along your journey?

I have no idea what the hell happened to the HUD. I really liked the old one, the new one looks like it's from a shitty focus-tested Facebook game :/ Doesn't fit with the tone at all.

I remember when I said this in a previous TLOU thread and people wanted to bite my head off for even suggesting that. People treating this game like it's videogame Jesus reincarnate are in for a lot of disappointment I reckon.

So do you think health bars should be replaced with red jelly covering the screen?

The thumping sound when you're wounded, distorted view effects, visual cues on the character, and yes even the blood splatter effect are preferable IMO to the HUD when your striving for "realism".

People that have played it, from press to gamers, have had nothing but praise for it.

A little late to the thread, but looks horrible and does not look fun. They don't do 'bleak' well, these guys. My 2 cents.

Horrible might be an overstatement, but it's definitely not as tense as the previous demo.

To be fair to the game, a major component is missing and that is the sound.

Can you imagine playing Dead Space 1 without the sound? It's a huge part of the experience.

Man, what is this crap.I tried to record and the threatened me because "no video recording is allowed".

I wanted to get 1080p footage for you guys.

Not really, those effects you listed make a little more sense in the first person perspective, but in third person they are pretty obtrusive and not really realistic.

If anything there wouldn't be a health bar on the HUD and you would have to guess how damaged Joel is based on his movement and the wounds that are shown on his body/character model.

People that have played it, from press to gamers, have had nothing but praise for it.

And? I'm sure the game will be good, great even, but some people are expecting TLOU to be game of the generation, and I just don't see it.

People can feel that way, nothing wrong with that, but seeing how people feel about the actual product is going to be entertaining to say the least.

Looks good, but the UI is terrible. What is ND's reason for changing it from the E3 demo? Focus testing? I also hate that humongous crosshair in the middle.

The game looks awesome, but I also have concerns about it. But ever since that E3 trailer, this game has been hyped to high heavens. Maybe too much . . .

Lol, seriously people expected every piece of footage to be as tense and well paced as a controlled 2 minutes E3 stage demo? I don't know what the fuck i'm reading.

I'm happy this is more of a real game and less of the constant ADHD stimuli fest Uncharted is.

This is true, maybe some people built unrealistic expectations, but i'm reading weird complaints.. that's probably why, though.

A bit off-topic, but i have this foolish hope that maybe... just maybe Naughty Dog found a better solution to the damned jaggies over what they've been using on the Uncharted games, i hate them with a passion (the jagged edges) when i see them marring an otherwise stellar visual spectacle (hello daytime scenes).

This is generally why I dislike super controlled looking gameplay by the devlopers as it creates unrealistic expectations for everyone else. Can't really blame people for being disappointed based off that.

I am oh so curious to mess around with the demo.

That X-ray thing would be better if you could only see footsteps, at least then it's closer to how your ears work. You know something is walking closer, but your not sure who or what.

Disappointed that this game features what are essentially zombies and its not solely about surviving against other human beings.

Listen mode would've been even more rad if all it did was astronomically amplify the sounds you hear, sprinting or moving a lot would make it so you can't use listen mode due to a racing heart beat or Joel trying to catch his breath.

C'mon, people on GAF should be into gaming enough to be able to read between the lines of a controlled E3 stage demo.

Nah, because you still wouldn't know what direction something or someone was coming from unless you had surround sound.

My God, you guys are fucking fickle.

You expect hyper realism, PS4 graphics, and not a single flaw.

I thought it looked great. The only problem I had was the see-through walls was a little too "gamey". Like, you could see the outline as well. I like the idea, but something more subtle would have been better. Maybe just the footsteps outlines would have been better.

Interestingly enough, Naughty Dog just hired a new UI designer.

It's pretty evident they weren't happy with what they have now I guess...

Or perhaps an outline that only throbs into view with every footfall.
