It's too bad. I'm not going to say that Otona Joshi no Anime Time is the best thing ever (other than the Yoshida episode), but the idea of animating stories about older women and perhaps for older women is an admirable one. I mean, I'm sure there are tons of similar stories in the jdrama world but it's like people who make anime don't even try.

Also, you didn't answer my question about Biblia! lol

Its a spoiler!

Main girl gets mugged and beaten up/pushed off stairs. It was... unpleasant to watch.

I wonder how many middle managers are crying right now. lol

I suppose this way they can actually leverage all aspects of the otaku-culture machine as efficiently as possible.

I think the impact might be a lot bigger than that. I'm not sure if people realize just how big the stake Kadokawa Group Holdings has in the entertainment media in Japan. We're talking about companies which have a ton of overlap and redundancy in output, which I presume only existed because they were allowed to compete as individual companies which happened to be under a group umbrella. So if they all remained profitable on their own, it didn't matter.

But now if they're all actually one single corporate entity, we might see some of this redundancy being axed. The weaker links could be scrapped, and only the parts of the brands which are actually valuable to the overall company would be retained. I think it's going to be interesting to see what happens between Dengeki's game magazines (under Ascii Media Works) and Famitsu's game magazines (under Enterbrain) for example.

Because of how much anime is associated to creepy otaku culture, going there would just get it at best ignored or at worst reviled. Its not a pretty topic.

no thats not a pretty topic and it can end up like what happened to my family. Abuse is fucked up no matter what.

I was expecting them to
end up losing but have the school bailed out my some really impressed financial backers
but I'm pretty pleased with just how great this ending was. After all, they
pretty much earned it after the brilliant way they took out the Maus.
The second season of this fantastic series just simply can't come soon enough. ;_;

How "j-doramatic"! I hope it was presented well at least.

Well, at some point it also makes sense to just have the brands compete against each other, even if they're owned by the same company. I guess I'm only thinking about how they're going to turn their IP farm into a more efficient process - since, as you said on IRC, you have a company that is now solely responsible for Hyouka and SAO. I wonder if we'll see fewer adaptations or the company be more conservative at least (since nerd shit always sells), since the larger organization will now just have a larger pool of manga/novels to choose from.

Yeah, it's that kind of episode. lol

I think if both Yoshida episodes didn't exist, then I probably would have been okay with this episode (and probably Yuuge as well). The disaffected housewife is probably a goldmine for these kinds of stories, since you can manufacture so many various family dramas that are easily identifiable for anyone.

Add in the fact that you have a generation of women who are being forced to balance work-life and family-life (assuming you can't afford to have a nursery built in your office like some women), and really the possibilities are endless.

Of course, the problem is that Jinsei Best 10 exists, which just goes in the other direction and rejects the premise of the housewife entirely... so while both the other episodes are meant to show how women can learn to find happiness in their domestic roles - whether it's finding the right man or choosing to have your own identity after being forced into various familial roles - having an episode about a woman who deals with her childhood angst and being trolled by just laughing it off? I have to imagine it's the most well received episode of the bunch anyway amongst its target demo anway. lol

Well, hopefully this project did well enough for them to consider a third series in a couple of years. Even without the Yoshida episode, I'm glad something like this just exists.

I had to look up which movie it was because I had never heard of the title, its Tree of Might!

I'm close to finish watching everything DBZ related: movies, specials ovas, videogame episodes etc. :p

That first episode ending is the only thing that hooked me. So glad it did. CG tanks at the beginning frightened the shit out of me.

CG tanks and circling camera showing 2D animation was like a combination out of hell. It was pretty terrifying.

Girls and Panzer 2

Yukari is best girl.

I guess I'm the only one who was horrified by the CG at the beginning of GuP 1. I suppose it's because I've been stuck on the Wii for so long I don't know wot gud grafix r.

But yeah, that ending probably took 100% of the viewing population by surprised.

Higurashi season 2 07

So everyone is doing different things, avoiding their mistakes from the parallel worlds and Rika wants to change her fate too. Color me surprised but the story so far is intriguing, something I didnot expect after the boring season 1.

Btw, do people go crazy too in this, is there sudden violence?

Tamako Market 12 END

tamako12.jpg

While the last few eps after the great episode felt pretty pointless, it still didn't stop me from enjoying this to the end. I didn't really mind that the
whole Tamako is the bride plotline was caused by a misunderstanding
as it kinda fit in with just how laid-back everything in this series has been. Well, that and the animation was still pretty goddamn charming and expressive so I kinda didn't really care at this point.

the story was too much slice of life I guess, it was quite repetitive.

I take it the new movie picks up after the ending? the ending both can be a set up for future series or just that

, they can leave it like that I guess.

No. The "movie" is a bit of a scam. It's a 66 min extended OVA episode thing which takes place between... I think ep21 and 22 or something like that. It's only a "movie" because they're releasing it in cinemas first. Lol. :(

I'm not seeing many people wrap up their impressions of Mouryou no Hako! Y'all a bunch of quitters? I mean, I can understand why you might have stopped and I know that I haven't jotted down any impressions in a while but at least I have the excuse of already watching it once.

~1.5 years after the TV series ended they come up with an inter episode OVA? lol, sigh...

I am going to get back to it. Honestly!
Admittedly, I probably put it on-hold for reasons you've already guessed.

This is correct. Savers is the series that you should watch if you want to see a dude fight against digimon with his bear hands
and punch out god
.

A guy with bear paws?

Perhaps I should check this out.

Well, if you told me that there would be a sequel to the first Otona Joshi, I definitely wouldn't have believed you back then either. lol

I'd honestly like to know how the project was conceived and what their measure of success is... but we'll probably never know.

This looks like K-On, but is it also as good as K on?
It's done by the same studio (and director, writer, character designer yada yada yada) and I'd probably put it somewhere between the good first and phenomenal second seasons of K-On! with the odd episode blowing even the later out of the water.

tl;dr yes

So after a whole year the show finally comes to a close. Consistently home to some of the better OPs and EDs that put most shows with just one of each to shame, a great ensemble of characters and just a pleasant viewing experience all round. It will be missed but luckily it will be back. Highly recommended, but if you're catching up don't rush it. It's a show to take your time over.

[Noein] - All

It's really hard for to talk about this work for a variety of reasons. Firstly, I watched it on and off over the course of about three years and so I don't really have a unified grasp on the series as a whole. Secondly, the UK release of this work, which I own, has horrendous dub-titles which often leads to confusion as they're apparently fairly inaccurate which doesn't help when you have a series which waffles on about (faux) Quantum Mechanics all the time. With both of those considerations in effect I can't really give the series a fair review. I can, however, speak in general about my impressions of the work.

Firstly, the series strengths lie in the characters and the animation, rather than in the overall plot. While this cast of characters is hardly unique there are a few number of them and the 'twist' that they put into series keeps things relatively fresh - to explain briefly, Noein is a science fiction work which posits that there a near infinite number of alternative dimensions to our own where people made different choices. As such you can have multiple variations of the same character from multiple directions which sometimes leads to some surprisingly effective scenes (particularly some of the flashbacks in the final episode) but sometimes just leads to really clunky, hitting the audience around the head dialogue. Still, they do a relatively good job of not having the main child cast be excessively annoying or stupid, which is a trap that a number of shows which feature a young cast fall into.

The overall plot is very messy and hard to describe, partially because I watched it over such a long period of time, partly because the subs are useless and partly because the writing is filled with inscrutable technobabble. There's some very key concepts to the series, like the need for observers to observe reality to make it reality, that just feel kind of thrown in there without any thorough explanation. At other times really, really simple concepts like the idea of multiple dimensions are explained over and over and over again for no discernible reason. In the end if none of this quantum nonsense really matters to the over story because it's really a work that deals with the idea of how does one deals with unhappiness, grief and suffering but it's wrapped up in layers and layers of sci-fi crap that unfortunately dilutes they key message.

All this science fiction, quantum stuff is mainly an excuse to have completely ridiculous action scenes that are not bound by any physical rules. The director, Kazuki Akane, seems to have a real belief in in the importance of having really lively animation and he isn't concerned with trying to limit the animators style, some scenes look incredibly sketchy in a way that you'd never see in a regular series. This produces a series which has some of the most expressive and impressive animation that I've seen in any TV series, although the quality oscillated between completely amazing and extremely basic as the show progresses. However, it's not just key fight scenes that look amazing, there's tons of cuts of characters doing every day stuff where the animation looks shockingly fluid. The same director would later go on to produce Birdy the Mighty and anyone who has seen that series knows how great it looks. Sadly I'm too lazy to capture my own .gifs but the internet has a few laying around. Sadly they're all from like, the same scene:

I guess what I'm saying is that, on the whole, the series is worth watching. Even if you don't want to watch the show you should probably Youtube the fight scenes because ma gawd.

Considering how expensive it is to make anime it's really hard to understand why it was even created in the first place, unless it was partially funded my some kind of grant or award. It's just a very unusual product within the field of anime.

Not that I'm complaining mind you, just curious.

It's just like I said. Real ladies drive tanks.

I seriously love lines like that.

Even the PSA knows real women drive tanks.

Kind of off to a slow start. Mostly school life and the unwitting protagonist making friends. Nothing special and kind of par for the course. Setting up the show for the episodes to come. Hopefully it picks up after this and I don't see so much school life.

Tamako Market - 12 END

well, it couldn't end any other way.

The part when
Tamako notices all the shops are closed and seemingly gets a flashback of the day her mother died
I thought it was well done, they didn't spell it out but you get what it was about.
In your average anime, characters probably would talk and explain exactly what it was word by word instead.

Capping off the series with a touching episode. Zura was on standby.

The movie.

"Oh it's probably just fake."

"Or maybe they're pretending it's fake."

"Or it is fake."

"That's what they want you to think."

"But it's really fake!"

Oh Sunrise. :p

[Noein] - All

I'm so glad you finished the show after the slightly rocky start you had a while back! I was absolutely obsessed with Noein when it aired, back in my anime blogging days I would write great long (rubbish) essays about it, so I'm always happy when people enjoy the show.

I believe the US release used the same subtitles, including one irritating translation mistake early in the series (and if I'm noticing mistakes you know there's something wrong...) The dub's not too bad, although there's a few too many actors doing multiple voices for my liking.

The middle part of the show, where the story changes focus from the future to the past, is probably the weakest from a narrative point of view. While the stuff that focuses on Haruka's parents is strong, I think the "concept" episodes (the camcorder episode, the telephone episode) are a little flimsy in execution. I'm still annoyed, nearly ten years later, that the end of the telephone episode is nothing but a stinger!

Still, they do a relatively good job of not having the main child cast be excessively annoying or stupid, which is a trap that a number of shows which feature a young cast fall into.

Isami, Miho and Yuu all have their moments of irritation, but the show's character development is strong and the payoff in episode 22 is completely worth it.

Agreed - the observer thing in particular bothered me, I didn't have any idea until years later that it's a major concept in quantum physics! I guess the stuff that was familiar to me - Schrodinger's cat, multiple universes etc. - was explained so simply and so frequently that I assumed that the observer was just something made up for the show.

I guess what I'm saying is that, on the whole, the series is worth watching. Even if you don't want to watch the show you should probably Youtube the fight scenes because ma gawd.

One day I will actually get around to compiling them all. I've mentioned before how much I love the Kosagi fight, but that leaves aside so many other great moments.
