Media Create Sales: Week 12, 2013 (Mar 18 - Mar 24)

I thought mpl90 had posted it already.

2012 Media Create Top 500: http://geimin.net/da/db/2012_ne_mc/index.php

It's in Japanese, use Google translate for you curiosity. Don't paste the entire thing on GAF.

PS3 has a
contrived
second million seller:

Resident Evil 5 - 496,392
Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition - 306,920
Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition [Move Special Pack] - 15,811
Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition [PlayStation 3 the Best] - 228,737
Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition / Resident Evil: Revival Selection Twin Pack - 39,734

Total: 1,087,594

Now try to find numbers that put your favorite in good light and your enemy to shame.

Used Google translate......Tales of Syria hahahahaha.

Had no idea Dragon's Dogma sold so well.

Where did the general idea it bombed come from anyway?

There was a misinterpreted comment from Capcom before about being happy if it sold 12 million or something.

Then the end of 2011 on, people decided it had to do Skyrim numbers to be successful for some reason.

No, by this point many of the Japanese have jumped ship to more profitable waters (as you say on both handheld and iOS.) If the PS4 takes off in Japan moreso than the PS3 you might see somewhat of a resurgance but it's a catch 22. The PS4 could only really ever be more "successful" than the PS3 if it got the japanese niche support you speak but to get the japanese support it needs that level of success.

So basically, to achieve that Ps4 would have to sell 3DS numbers right from release day?

Tempest R should be the final nail in the coffin then.

Can't wait for Narikiri Dungeon 4 on 3DS...

Why are the tales games on the Vita used as some sort of vindication that they should be on the 3DS? I doubt those games would have done much better on the 3DS. Before you taliking about how well Tales of the Abyss did, that was a beloved entry in the franchise whereas the Vita is getting DS remakes that weren't well received on the DS even. If they are trying to gauge Tales interest on the Vita they chose terrible games to do it with.

It definitely needs to sell more than 3 million in its first year if its going to cause Japanese devs to jump back to consoles.

and for the sake of argument assuming that it releases at the yen equivalent of 399$ + knack + any other japanese games what would be a realistic number ?

dare to make a prediction?

I don't think Knack is a game that will appeal to the masses, as much charm as it may have.

Also from this thread (thank you Jonny):

Capcom turned into Level-5!!

Can we officially call Capcom the biggest support pillar on the 3DS?? At least third party wise.

It's interesting, since they were pretty much absent on the DS, few exceptions.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!

I need another Resident Evil title (RE2: Rebirth, come on!), then we'll be set for that battle :p

No, seriously (still, Capcom, gimme RE2: Rebirth!), they're certainly one of the best 3DS third party supporters. The fact is that recently Atlus started turning into a Nintendo second party all of a sudden.

Intelligent Systems, I pray that you have moved on to your Advance Wars 3DS project. I will buy it at a high price. Do not let me down.

lmao

Intelligent Systems has better games to work on. Nintendo might give Advance Wars to a western partner. Japan does not care.

Advance Wars is dead. Long live Advance Wars.

You're going to get more Fire Emblem and you're going to ENJOY IT.

Capcom, Level-5 and Index all seem pretty firmly planted on 3DS. I just wish the last one would bring some Sting love to the system now.

Innocence and (moreso) Hearts were pretty well recieved on DS. Tempest is the one that's hated.

Abyss was a barebones port, the Vita R trilogy are full blown remakes. It's not a perfect comparison, but things aren't necessairily favoring Abyss to the degree you imply here. Abyss sold in line with previous handheld ports, Innocence and Hearts R are setting record lows for remakes (and mothership Tales in general).

Miku 3DS - 181,441
Well, Project Mirai 2 seems like an easy bet then. Can't believe it did nearly as much as Project Diva f.

I won't agree unless Persona 5 ends up on 3DS or Wii U, a second party is fully supportive of one manufacturer.

They are making many strides, with SMTIV and the crossover being the biggest ones, that's for sure.

And we're still owed Persona 3DS, I'll even take Persona 3 to tie with the movie this year! :(

after making one of the best fire emblems and paper marios, i think they might have gotten the greenlight to revive this series in a big way.

Well I am thinking its going to get MGS and FF in its first year and if it releases at 35,000 yen I can see it reaching 2 million in its first year.

It would need some exclusive third party support (not ps3/ps4 which MGS and FF might be) and probably GT if it wants a shot at 3+ million in its first year.

The ideal price would be 30,000 yen though.

This is my prediction right now. I really have no idea how the Japanese will view the PS4 but we should get a better idea after E3 and TGS.

Do we have any up to date figures for Project Diva f.

EDIT: Didn't see that lol thanks. My eyes are playings tricks on me because I swear I only saw the first line of your post.

It really doesnt matter because publishers don't care. The Wii got a bunch of shitty spinoffs which "proved" it was a bad platform. Excuses generally dont fly with publishers even if there is a hint of truth.

Skyward Sword is also a poor game to judge the health of a fan base on as it's the only Zelda game to ever need a peripheral that didn't come with the system to play- I'm surprised it sold as well as it did considering players had to fork out for m+. The DS entries and OOT 3D are a better barometer until we get a 3DS or WiiU entry.
MM needed the RAM extension which came bundled like the M+. It's very similar to SS, even including selling less than the predessor on the same hardware.

I may be slightly off on the details, but IIRC, they were taking a small loss of about $10-15 per unit after the drop to $99. Which is exactly what I'm suggesting for the WiiU. Use the crossover points as price drops. So if the cost is $275-325, then sell for $300, if the cost drops below $275, then sell for $250. If the cost drops below $225, then sell for $200, etc.

That way you're getting some sales at a small profit per unit until it crosses the threshold, and then a small loss per unit until it crosses the next threshold, when you're making a small profit again for a while. It all balances out to a neutral effect on hardware, and you make some money off of the software. That's exactly what they did with the Gamecube as well.

I understand what you mean and I agree it would be a good strategy for Wii U. What I'm questioning is that the GC was ever sold at cost or above. Do you have a source for the 10-15$ loss *after* the price drop? And a loss is still a loss, it's simply not at cost.

Even the NES was sold close to cost, Sony just started to take ridiculous hits with their consoles even before the PS3. PS2 was sold at a loss when it launched. Not sure if that still was the case when the GC arrived as it was so late. But the GC had mostly better specs and was less expensive from the beginning. No DVD and other 'missing' features may have been able to keep the price low but before Wii no one (including Nintendo) ever tried to make serious profits on hardware itself. You tried to become market leader and thrive on royalties.

It didn't bomb, but it still sold worse than Monster Hunter in the west.

Edit: Nevermind, I thought you were talking about Paper Mario: Sticker Star. Now your comparison makes some sense.

Anyway, Monster Hunter Tri and Dragon's Dogma shipped a similar amount of units in the West.

How do you go from Game & Wario to Dragon's Dogma?

Here:

Game and Wario just seemed like a stupid concept from the start.

"Hey guys, lets take away the crazy super fast mechanic which made the other Wario games so popular!"
Nintendo has been making a lot of stupid decisions lately. I don't understand why they've been radically changing every franchise of theirs except the ones that actually need it, like NSMB and Zelda. Paper Mario Sticker Star is one of the worst first party titles they've ever released. An RPG where battling serves no purpose? Count me in!
Didn't stick star sell better than the other Paper Mario Games in Japan.
Only because it was a handheld iteration. The quality of the game had nothing to do with it, which is why it bombed in North America and Europe.
It did?
It didn't bomb, but it still sold worse than Monster Hunter in the west.
I didn't know Monster Hunter Tri had shipped over 1.3 million units in the West.
Dragons Dogma shipped 1.3 million worldwide, not just in the west.
