Thief Previews, Screens and Artworks

That sounds like a game changer and great addition with dynamic shadows for stealth that is truly something great to hear. Also in regards to this being a next-gen title and using its resources it's nice to hear about the scale being big of The City and I love the narration approach between the thief and his home. This is sounding very promising but again we need to see gameplay and level design left.

Thief on PS4 Will be Almost Identical to PC Version, Says Producer

Thief 4 on the PS4 will look “really close” to the PC version, according to the game producer, Stephane Roy.

... I think with the next-gen, yeah visually speaking, with the high-end PC and next-gen it’s going to be really, really close, honestly.”

Roy did state however that there will be a “special feature” that will be PC only, they did not specify what that feature will be. Thief launches on PC, PS4, and other next gen consoles in 2014.

More at the link.

Visually it reminds me of Thief 3.

I've only loosely been following the game, but have they said if it was originally a 360/PS3 title that was pushed to next gen?

Keep that immersion-killing third person nonsense out of my Thief games!

You do realize that IRL, you don't need to rotate your entire body just to see what's on your left and right side, right? Which is not how FPV in games work. And while you don't exactly have eyes on the back of your head, you usually can tell if someone is behind you. But that is rather hard to do in FPV games without rotating the character 180 degrees. To me that's more immersion-killing than playing in Third person mode. I never see the characters as myself anyway. I see it as those characters that I just happen to control.

The screenshots are weird. Some of them clearly show the character in Third person mode while others seem to be in First person mode.

I think from the sounds of the previews it is doing the same third person treatment (to a degree) that Deus EX:HR did with takedowns (optional) and certain climbing and cover triggers.

I want a third person view like Deadly Shadows pls. I just love dat crouching animation with dynamic lighting ala Splinter Cell.

I read the RPS one a few minutes ago and it's hard to really make any kind of judgement in the controlled environment they were demoing it. I will say that making him more agile like Corvo makes me nervous as the whole point of the game is to be slow and stealthy, but right now it's hardly game breaking.

What happened to your tag?

I remain cautious when it comes to Garrett's actual design which I personally find atrocious but it sounds like it is shaping up somewhat nicely. It's had some developmental hell so here's to hoping the final lives up the legacy the previous games set up.

Don't really have any high hopes of the game but I'd love to be surprised.

Playing it at 60fps will be the advantage.

Huh. Is this game only playable in first person mode? I hope not.

Yes thankfully. Although it seems like during climbing and wall hugging it will switch to third person which is a terrible idea just like it was in Human Revolution. I guess they don't want to spend all of that money on the character design for nothing.

What happened to your tag?

I don't know for sure. I'm guessing it was punishment for the team real/cg shit even though I picked real on the poll *shrug*.

same, I didn't like Deus Ex HR going into third person for cover/takedowns and it sounds like this one will do the same thing

I remember a year or so back a guy who'd worked on the team had his profile up on Linkedin, and it listed "third-person takedown animations" in an entry that was obviously Thief 4. That was a big warning sign.

Hopefully theyll release a video of the demo soon. I always wonder what the point of inviting journalists to come watch them play and write about it is when they could just put it up on youtube

Most likely so they can have time to get impressions up / previews for us. I am sure we will see something new from it before too terribly long in video form. I finished the RPS read and yeah I am in the camp that feels like third person segments are not my cup of tea, annoyed me in Deus Ex HR.

I think the screens look pretty decent... they just need a shit ton more AA. Gonna go through the previews now

They do seem to understand what Thief is about. They're not making the same mistakes as CRystal dynamics either, who spoke of nothing but an emotional story for months.

Hopes are rising.

I felt like they understood what made Deus Ex great too, but then the realities of modern game development kicked in and it didn't matter how much they knew about Deus Ex. It will be the same here most likely.

Well this time it's a next gen title so there can be no excuse for hardware resources in terms of scale and design. I have faith in the studio behind it, even if it's a different team inside, I am sure they follow the same philosophy and management structure.

It's not just hardware limitations, it's player limitations too. Being a AAA title means it has to be designed so the lowest common denominator on consoles doesn't get lost and/or confused by the mechanics and level design and trade it in immediately and then warning everyone they know how terrible it is. Like in HR how most rooms either have a vent or a hackable door to get out of (sometimes both), it's safe and boring level design.

HR was a great first attempt come on. If they made a game that's exactly like the original to begin with, it would bomb and the series would be dead. They need to gradually work thier way towards that level of complexity.

Looks pretty neat. I never played the original Thief games so I can't really comment, but open world stealth games are a genre I want to see more developers try.

I think they need to let me take their screenshots :P

Seriously, even for UE3, these look kinda... meh. BUT... I'm going to remain optimistic, because thief games should be about the gameplay. If the visuals are passable, the game can still be great.

EDIT: I just read that they're changing the voice actor for Garrett. F$&#@!CK my hype level just dropped to 0.

A lot of it can be summed up in a single scene: Garrett is on a rooftop in the midst of The City, on his way to break into a brothel called The House of Blossoms in pursuit of a nobleman wearing an expensive medallion, and in order to proceed on this path (others are available) he needs to bypass a couple of guards below him. Only problem: they're standing in a brightly lit doorway and one of them is facing outwards. Rather than waiting for them to move on, however, he does something awesome: he uses a rope to lower himself into the shadow behind the guard furthest from the door. What shadow? The dynamic shadow being cast by the lantern the guard is holding up in front of his chest. He then waits for the guards to move inside the door, follows slowly, and slips behind a stack of boxes to one side once they cross the threshold.
This is the kind of stuff that gets me excited for next gen.

Looks very promising. There has been a dearth of genuinely stealth focused games lately.

My cellphone sucks so I can't read the previews but what I'm seeing is troubling, even if third person is optional just existing is worrying since it can affect level design, also I'm really sad to not see the old hammerites and pagans anywhere, I don't get why they are botching the universe of the series so much, do they think is not "cool enough" for today's kids?

If only the modern industry worked like that lol.

Well, if the next Deus Ex is even more dumbed down, like every other game then we will know thier intentions. Based of the missling Link DLC though, they seem to have learned thier lessons.

The last paragraph in the RPS article expresses what I hope Eidos Montreal realize about the game: The levels/world themselves are the enemy as much as the Beatdown-Happy guards or zombies were.

I was really hoping they weren't going to do any transitions to third person. That stuff was sort of jarring in Human Revolution.

I can't really bring myself to get excited. Like, it might yet turn out to be surprisingly above expectations. But my expectations are so, so low that the most I can hope for is "a game that reminds me of the Thief series in some ways, while annoying me in all the others".

If it be first person then I hope we get decent FoV. Third person makes more sense (esp. since we move our eyes and turn our heads far too often IRL for the sake of awareness).

I wonder how does one contextualize, "very close". Perhaps it'll be like Crysis 3 on PS3 vs PC. Eh, any way, I wonder how the nextbox will do.

I really hope those screens aren't a true representation of what the game will look like next gen in terms of IQ. If it does then lol@next gen hardware.
