Microsoft Studios' creative director has some choice words about always-online

Will reserve full judgement until we know how this will work...

I will say i like seeing anyone in this space be ballsy, advance the machine even if means leaving a segment behind.

I'm fully expecting durango to be built to cater to all the unpopular things publishers want to do to my video games. I'm expecting big durango favoritism out the gate from the large publishers.

Always online might not seem so bad at first to casuals because they have to have that all new COD or Madden, but once their internet providers start going down or Microsoft's servers starting crashing, reality going to hit them square in the face.

LOL I've always loved this GIF.

On-topic: What the fuck MS? Oh hell naw

I never thought people would embrace them with their pay-to-play online Xbox live model. So who knows what actually happens.

I've spoken to a few friends about this situation. They are too far deep inside MS. They are defending this bullshit practice even though they've never played a PC game, so they don't know how shitty this is.

I think a lot of people need to understand when they're representing a company through their public twitter accounts, their personal opinion doesn't have a place. Everything you say on that account should reflect the views of the company you represent.

If you act like an arrogant asshole on Twitter, that's how people will view your company. It's really very simple.

After D3 and Simcity, I am pretty much never buying something with always-on DRM.

The issue isn't my internet, it's theirs. Game companies have proven to me they can't manage singleplayer DRM servers

Do you know how much that would cost? What does it sell in the opening week on other systems, 5 or so million?

So, roughly 135,000,000, assuming $27 per copy to the publisher.

You think them paying Activision roughly 150,000,000 or more is going to happen? Really?

How many 720s and PS4s do you really think are going to be sold in the first month? Hint, it isn't going to be 5 million.

PLEASE tell me the mass market won't stand for this. I know the informed gamer won't, but I can't imagine what kind of message this would send if Durango does well regardless (unless of course there's stuff that makes up for it).

US Americans and such as are too fucking stupid to know when they're getting shafted. I bet MS will do incredibly well here next-gen. Even if they don't sell as many consoles overall, they'll be making much more money digitally so it won't matter.

The more I think about "Why on earth would I live there", the angrier I get.

Typical urban elitist attitude at its finest.
Yup. I'm born and raised in a city, and even I think it's pretentious douche baggery.

REAL LIFE CONVERSATION I HAVE HAD WITH REAL PEOPLE (to the best of my memory)

Me: "So, you heard about the next Xbox?"
Him: "No, what's it like? Any good?"
Me: "Well, no official details yet, but all signs are pointing to bad things. Seems like it'll block used games."
Him: "What are those?"
Me: "Like, pre-owned games. You know, second-hand. Cheap."
Him: "Oh, right."
Me: "Yeah, and it's always online too. Probably. So if your internet connection goes down, you're fucked. You can't use it."
Him: "Yeah I doubt it"/"Well, I'm sure it'll be OK, and I don't want a PS4"/"Let's see how it turns out"

I've never had someone actually be outraged or the least bit upset by this. How.

Blind submission !

Because like the people that bought Simcity, they don't know how bad it's gonna be until they get hit with the first problem.

Questions for defenders:

-Why do I need to have my internet on to load a single player game?
-Why should I get kicked out of playing a single player game if my internet kicks out for some arbitrary amount of time?
-Why would I pay for Xbox Live if I have to be online all the time anyway?
-Are they tracking my usage/targeting ads at me by being online? Can I opt-out?
-Why should I be disadvantaged by an arbitrary decision because the area I live in experiences sometimes patchy internet? Electronic devices require electricity to run. Only a few types of games actually require internet connections to run.

And so on.

Exactly. Some just can't grasp these potential issues

You shouldn't have to. You don't have to. Don't buy the system if all of that stuff is true. For every one of you, there are 100 people who won't care though. This is what MS is banking on. It's a design decision (a bad one, I agree), not a case for the BBB.

Twitter account is locked out on my end. I don't have a Twitter account myself, so maybe that is why.

This dude is a nobody looking for some attention.

Probably a new hire or a fake account.

Take this thing with a grain of salt...

Oh wait, this is Neogaf; where everyone jumps to conclusions!

These kinds of posts are always shit. Generalizing a whole forum where there are a bunch of unique members.

So what are the chances of Latin American Durangoes having the constant internet connection requirement removed for that particular market? This is assuming the always online is real

Because if that does happen, im guessing that there will be some hot import action going on lol

If it's a fake account why would an esteemed Bioware developer converse with him and all major 343 employees follow him?

The damage control is insane on here.

Just a curious thought here. I know dedicated gamers like GAF members and others who browse all gaming news are offended by this since we are in the know. But what abut the ignorant masses who don't know wtf DRM, always-online and such mean? They might still gobble up the Durango and Microsoft might spin the "always-connected" feature to be a massive benefit.

I don't think always online is a fact and I think these tweets are just this guy clowning folks. You are correct, regardless if all this stuff is true the next Xbox will sell tens of millions to people who either do not know about or care about any of this stuff.

This is the difference between Microsoft and Google.

Microsoft will jam products down your throat hoping you will like it.
Google spends years creating services to support your livelihood and spearheading projects like Google Fiber.

One tells you to get the internet, another gives you internet.

And then Google rips them out underneath your feet. RIP Google Reader.

But seriously, I think people have the right to have a working product on day one. The launches of Sim City and Diablo 3 were poorly managed. They just under estimated their hardware. I doubt MS is going to make that same mistake. They've run XBL 24/7 since 2002 with very few outages. The only major (>24 hours) outage I can recall is the holiday one (one major outage over 11 years? Quite impressive I believe.).

The problems people have with internet connections is real though, but I do think it's getting blown out of proportions. For example, are people in these areas not able to play any MMO? Can they not watch movies on Netflix and enjoy it? I think people in these areas do use a lot of online services with minimal issues. I grew up in a suburb in Wisconsin where our only provider was Time Warner. The shit was slow, but it never went out for me with any consistency.

Of course, as many people have mentioned before, Steam also doesn't work if you start it up when you don't have internet. To use their offline mode, you have to be online and select "Go Offline" in the menu. That doesn't exactly work when you don't have internet to begin with. But, to be fair, if your internet goes out after Steam is open, it won't bring up a network troubleshooter and pause your games.

As long as MS can make sure that XBL is stable, I don't think there's really going to be an issue.

Oh, and Sony did say that they aren't forcing this at the platform level. It's up to the publishers if they want to require online for their games. I think people on PS4 are still going to get a heavy dose of online only games.

If people are willing to pay $60/year for questionable value in Live, people will accept always online. I doubt this even makes a dent in sales.

I can't wait for awesome features that come from always-online. Things like a ticker that tells you about awesome deals on products they think you'd like based on the information that they can now collect from you in real time, all the time.

What will happen is that they buy Durango and then never be able to connect to the internet, then go back to return it to Gamestop and then get something else.

Metroidvania

People called Romanes they go the house?
It too early to pronounce doom on the Xbox just because of a few stupid tweets. This attitude is unacceptable.

GAF (and any rumor presenting tech site) loves it some speculation.

Telling people how they act on speculation given the long and poignant silence by MS on Durango in general, as well as the more specific issue of always online and what it entails for consumers are certainly something to take note of.

Is it hyperbolic? Sure.

But telling people that their opinion is unacceptable seems equally silly to me.

The market will stand for it, and pretty much everyone here will cave and Microsoft wins. It is inevitable.

The market probably will, but I don't know about the core/enthusiast gamer. Repeated exposure to horror stories on always online stick around, and so does word of mouth, such as RRoD.

Wait, lemme guess - always online is a-okay with you, right?

Not really. After writing the post I went back and re-read a lot of the posts and it actually didn't seem like it was too bad. I think when I skimmed through a couple of pages--I managed to land on all of the "F** YOU" "C** SUCKER" type of stuff, and was genuinely shocked. Most seem to have a pretty level head about it all. The statements were mostly fine with me until he just dumped on all people living in rural places. I hope he meant, "why would I live there, my industry is in la-seattle-blah"....but I don't think it was meant that way at all.

For me personally, always online isn't an issue. I definitely see it being an issue with many other people throughout the world, and it doesn't seem like it would be productive.

However, Steam advanced PC gaming by having certain requirements and we now see them as the bastion Gods of PC Gaming. Their service was even god awful for nearly two years, yet it managed to become 'pc gaming'.

I see this as a very risky bet on their online services being fantastic to the point where it overcomes some of the issues inherent in this design. I assumed always on, always connected was the same thing as the way they refer to WP8--it's an always on device, and it is always connected to the internet. Knowing that gives developers a large amount of options for interesting gameplay mechanics and opens up multiplayer gameplay in lots of interesting ways. I see it sort of as the demon souls/dark souls type of thing.

That isn't true. Go try it yourself.

That's what Facebook and other social media are for. Already warned my friends and colleagues before MS can spin this BS.

For some reason he deleted the Obama response pic....but his other tweets are there. Why lol

Because then you'd have republicans deciding they aren't buying the next xbox, because they can't stand the President lol. And then it would make its way into mainstream news, all because of President Obama's picture, which would be even more bad news for Microsoft to have their company associated with comments such as these. My preferred reason, however, is that the President is way too awesome an individual to have him associated with such idiocy.

Pick your own reasons lol.

theyre-opening-a-xbox360-store-in-japan-no-seriously-evilcontrollers.jpg

So, shelves will look like this at launch here?

Heh, I think it will look like that in Japan even if the console didn't require an online connection. I really hope they are not going to bring out Durango in Japan for the obvious reasons. I have some concerns for it in te US and UK, especially if those rumors are confirmed.
