The train left the station when they told developers they could develop their games with always online in mind.

It's going to be spun at E3 as this revolutionary, comprehensive, unprecedented innovation that allows you to stream games instead of downloading them, have instant state resumes, stream movies / all of your favorite content, etc.

MS's going to load it with features to try and dampen the rage before it gets out of control.

For that strategy to work, they really can't say anything right now that isn't vehemently anti-always online, otherwise it will just add fuel to the fire.

I honestly don't think an always-on console is necessarily a bad thing. I'm sure developers could make that work to their advantage (a game like Journey for example), where they don't have to account for cases where a subset of consoles are not up to date, not connected to the internet, etc.

He's a moron for sure but he shouldn't be fired. LOL And I'm most definitely not purchasing the new xbox now. If times got lean and I had to cancel my internet connection, I'd hate for my console to essentially turn into a brick.

Phil Spencer heads up Microsoft Studios, so think there are probably a bunch of execs below him, and then managers of groups of projects/games, then the leads or creative directors. So many he's 3 or 4 levels down from Phil? I'm sure Phil has shit on this guy by now. Even if he was just joking and messing around. Damage is done.

Agreed, and his latest twitter comment that was posted here wasn't even bad. He called always online stupid and to buy a ps4 if you don't like it. The guy constantly says dumb stuff, this wasn't one of them.

it was one of them. There is a real discussion to be had hear about anti-consumer practices and he is stifling it by downplaying it all.

Adam Orth sounds like a fucking prick. I wouldn't mind a console where we buy games from an online store but to have to be always online to play a game is ridiculous. I was thinking about switching over to PS4 because of Destiny but this always on bullshit is helping this decision a lot easier. I'm going to wait for some official info before I make a decision. Mind you I hate when people rage and say that they will switch over to the playstation. If playstation does this always on bullshit I'll just move to PC gaming.

I find it interesting that the one option you left out was that "Hey, always online provides a great benefit to the consumer". This is a completely plausible option that everyone seems to forget because of past company failures and the failure to see Microsoft's "hand" so to speak.

Are you completely denying that always online could provide a benefit to consumers/journalists/developers/publishers/retail partners in the gaming marketplace that you may not have thought of yet?

The worst thing about this for MS is that they didn't get to dilute the attention this issue would inevitably receive with all the other positive coverage that will come from an official reveal.

I mean... when MS reveals the console, most of the coverage will be in summary format, jornos giving the rundown on all the features. Always-online will be one thing of many to talk about.

Now, the only thing people are talking about is this shit, and MS didn't even have the chance to get out in front of it with anything positive.

Just... incredibly dense and quite possibly damaging.

I hope I'm not exaggerating too much, but I think I just witnessed one single man completely destroy Microsoft's reputation with the core crowd - the very people who actually are always online.

I guess the third gen curse is real. It feels like Sony and Microsoft swapped places or something in terms of attitude.
