Microsoft Studios' creative director has some choice words about always-online

Interesting I just find it hard to understand why a company that wants to make money would do this, something like this would pretty much kill the product. I still don't beleive this is true based in common sense, hopefully MS has common sense to not do this.

They're probably aiming at delivering lots of ads and making up for lost sales with that. That, and eliminating used games.

Isn't the entire internet basically a couple of good arguments surrounded by verbal diarrhea? What is this guy on.

What, you think he actually wanted rebuttals?

I see your error.

Something tells me he's less concerned about sexual slurs and more concerned about his favorite corporation taking a beating. Just a hunch. If you have nothing to counter the actual argument, then find a way to discredit the person(s) making it.

Nice grammar!

Not necessarily at all. He's apparently a tactless idiot, and all he needs to see are online rumors to spur his desire to post those tweets.

You can assume one way while I can assume another. I understand your point but the timing and multiple posts do not make ANY sense unless he possibly heard or has seen something. I mean, it literally would make no sense whatsoever. Especially if he's at least somewhat familiar with leaks and current rumors. I can't fathom the justification unless he's completely trolling the very consumers that his company are going for, and if so ... then I still can't understand why.

In fact, to just make it up out of thin air seems almost more ridiculous of a reason than him seeing something and posting on it.

Pyromaniac provided him with exactly what he requested, but it may or may not be on the same page as less articulate posts from other people, so unfortunately cannot be considered by Mr. Gies. Sounds reasonable to me!

Holy crap. He isn't interested in sensible discussion or debate at ALL. That's an incredibly blatant sidestep of reasonable conversation, using the minority offensive posters as a scapegoat.

Man this guy is waaaaaay over the top.

Ugh, I just finished up on everything in the OP (and a few posts here and there) and man, that's some depressing stuff right there. "Hey people, it's going to happen anyway so roll over and don't complain about it!"

I need to lie down

I is sad that there are "journalists" that completely lost what is their job about in first place.

You shouldn't be reading his tweet then Gies, because you just surrounded it with shit.

I'm still waiting for awa64 to point out the "homophobic slurs" and "sexual slurs directed at Microsoft."

He won't, now that's he's been called out.

All of you getting at Arthur: Why don't you tweet the linked posted EXACTLY as it is via-copy-pasta to Arthur: He can't ignore that then.

You shouldn't be reading his tweet then Gies, because you just surrounded it with shit.

...this thread contains homophobic slurs directed specifically at Arthur Gies and features an animated .gif using sexual slurs against Microsoft as a punchline. (edit: see immediately above.)

"Vomit and diarrhea" sounds about accurate to me.

Kindly outline which post/s are you referring to?

lol what a surprise.

I tweeted him that it was a single post and hence was not surrounded by "vomit". He doesn't want to read it because it's on GAF.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
How can someone link directly tweets making them viewable here? He just answered to me and gerardcue. Or better, didn't answer XD

Wait so his argument for why he doesn't want it in "shitty" threads is because he doesn't want to wallow through vomit and diarrhea ...but people link him specific posts that avoid him having to do that ....it would be easier just to say "I hate GAF and fuck them" .

Sure, but if they are building their whole "pricing" strategy based on it I don't see them dropping it.

Subsidize the price of the console based on: 1) Increased revenues due to no used games; 2) requiring a gold subscription to play; lower price point due to 1) and 2) + require a 2 year live subscription for the discount (See $250 vs 399-450).

Can't Sony subsidise their console with PSN+

Arkham

The Amiga Brotherhood
As a game design example, if I wanted to build an online RPG type game where all of the NPCs were instances of other people's characters, I would have to budget to include static NPCs to account for a case where the game is not connected to the internet if the console was not guaranteed to be always on.

Send that to Susan Wilson, she'll Kickstart it for you.

Always online is a viable design decision for a game, but I do not see how on earth it could be justified and/or sold on a console basis, so I didn't believe the rumors till now. Not only is this terrible news if true, but this is the worst possible way it could have broken. Just wow.

720 is gonna be pretty useless for tournaments or any kind of gathering where there's multiple consoles and no wifi.

How are they connected together if there is no "wifi"?
Did you mean "internet"?

You can have wifi without internet and you can have internet without wifi.
It's just a matter of whether or not there's a cable running from the box to the router.

This has been so fun watching one of the first true GAF meltdowns where there is the equivalent of an open prayer service that this destroys the the Nextbox before it arrives.

It won't over a tweet from this guy, but the free press for this system no matter how bad the rumors are spin is going to make the Nextbox reveal absolutely historic.

MS should let this one ride, because the literally could squash this entire situation like a but the millisecond they show offline gaming.

But let's say, MS was idiotic and really had no offline gaming. The negative press for this dumb decision is not only going to hurt the Nextbox, but it's literally going to destroy the whole cloud streaming idea for last gen, because you need to always be online for it to work.

So much popcorn was consumed while this thread moved at the speed of light, this is definately why GAF rules at times like this.

still there is a lot of people who think that no offline play wont cause any problems to ms..yeah its hard to believe

I've seen this method of argument and analysis recently. It was presented by my 5-year old.

There's a guy who works two minimum wage jobs. He just saved up enough money to buy the new 720 because he loves Madden. It's the only game he buys every year.

The problem is that he just moved out of his mother's house, so bills are tight. He doesn't have broadband because

1) It's expensive
2) Where he lives, the internet service providers don't have plans he can afford.

You just kept him from playing video games with your always-on connection.

Another guy just started college. He loved Xbox when he was in high school, but the college doesn't allow you to hook your Xbox up to the internet.

You just kept him from playing video games with your always-on connection.

There's a child who got a new Xbox for Christmas. His parents can't be bothered to set up the console so he can get on Xbox Live.

You just kept him from playing video games with your always-on connection.

There's a place out in the country that doesn't have any means of reliable broadband access. A family has scraped together enough money to buy a new Xbox.

You just kept them from playing games with your always-on connection.

Thunderstorm? No video games.

Poor people? No video games.

Not allowed? No video games.

Not tech savvy? No video games.

I don't know if Microsoft realizes this, but their brand was built on college-age males who aren't rich.

You're punishing them.

Well said, sir. Well said.

Aegies is butthurt over GAF turning on his bullcrap, yet he still follows the New Thread twitter account and logs into the site every day.

Every now and then I checkout this thread to see what is new and I am consistently amazed at how fast this is moving. In the amount of time it takes me to read an entire page (and look at the references posted on previous pages) the thread is 3+ pages longer. There is E3 levels of activity going on here.

After the Kotaku article which already put people on edge this guy's tweets essentially kicked the hornet's nest.

If someone did then they're probably banned, or will be once someone can find the post in question in this huge thread.

I'm guessing even if someone did then this person is just using that 1 dickhead as a way to write off the whole forum because "waaah they're bashing my favorite company".

I'm not Arthur Gies but I probably wouldn't want to engage in a thread as violent and inconsolable as this one currently is. His passive aggressive shots through Twitter are weak though. He probably should ignore the insults of this thread if he truly feels above discourse with the people directing those same insults at him.

I don't know of a single large hotel, especially one that would accommodate a tournament, that doesn't have WiFi.
I have seen plenty of fighting game tourneys streamed over 4g due to wifi issues in the convention room/etc. Obviously this is not a huge issue, but it is still an issue. An issue that would not exist were it not for compulsory online authentication.

Really you only need a switch since there is nothing going out to the internet, everything is staying local. But yes you are correct. Switch + Ethernet is all you need. (You can use a router, it is really just slightly ghetto, but you gotta use what you have on hand)

I doubt Arthur wants to give hits to a website where the owner called him out as crap at his job. That being said, Arthur is crap at his job!

Giantbomb is gonna play it safe on this issue just like they play it safe on everything.

Well that and GiantBomb has a strong 360-bias when it comes to game versions to review, so they'll duck out because "hey, not my problem so long as I continue to get free 720 games."

Yeah, so awa64's comment that this thread is full of shit posts that discount any valid discussion is suspiciously similar to Arthur's tweet that anything surrounded by shit comments is automatically disqualified.

Just sayin'.

There has to be some rule about gaf threads where, once the original topic has been talked into the ground, it's time to shit on Gies.

He comes off as an asshat but he's just one video game dude on an internet full of them.

I actually now predict a sudden turn of events with Microsoft changing the policy and next week publicly announcing that it won't need to be online.

That's going to be a hard one because it seems that their whole next gen gaming platform is based on being always online. Suddenly changing a huge part of that just before launch is going to be tough.

Also, they may have legal obligations with publishers now that would prevent them from doing so.

I honestly wish he'd come in here and talk to us. (Also pay that guy for the bet he lost.) There's no reason why this has to be an adversarial relationship, plenty of games writers get along just fine here.
