Microsoft Studios' creative director has some choice words about always-online

honestly I don't know what the furor is about. If there's enough features to warrant the always-on system then it deserves to be in there. I've used my system w/ no internet from time to time, but it's rare enough that I wouldn't count it as a dealbreaker (though obviously it will put the PS4 in a slightly more favorable light).

We've survived worse things in gaming history, such as wholesale adoption of controllers over mouse/KB for playing shooters. The upshot that time was greatly increased accessibility and convenience. Long as there's something to always-on aside from piracy protection on MS's side, this is going to be a nonissue.

There are other people in the world who don't always have connections at all times. Military men, college kids who cant afford it, places where the internet infrastructure is garbage.

Its going to be amusing when this is all debunked.

Why wouldn't Microsoft just come outright and say it then?

"If we were working a new console, it would not have always online requirements"

Squash that bug before it spreads to major media outlets and save face.

Hint:
Because it does have it

I received an official statement from Microsoft a few minutes ago, via their PR agency Edelman:

http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/...ll-require-always-on-internet-connection.aspx

A non response. They needed to do more, a lot more to defuse this story.

he statement reads as follows:

"We are aware of the comments made by an employee on Twitter. This person is not a spokesperson for Microsoft, and his personal views are not reflective of those of the company. We have not made any announcements about our product roadmap, and have no further comment on this matter."

Guess this all but confirms it, although it does leave room for the opposite to also be true.

Forcing an internet connection to be required to play single player games is a Bad Thing, but that reason is pretty weak. You going to add the electricity or cost of the TV/monitor, or the food you eat to have the energy to play, or...?

Electricity!? oh the irony... food and energy? You're just being silly now.

I have a choice. I don't HAVE to pay £300 extra to play my games right now, in fact I've had my console for three years and only went online this year. This policy means you will HAVE to pay that £300 extra if you want to play ANY game.

I love how they link to shinobi's user profile and the first thing you see is his avatar. :)

lol

welp, with the bane gif and the PR response, I think this thread has climaxed.

It's been fun gents. I would have slept the excitement off too were it not for this ridiculous lawn mower down the street.

I think Sweet Billy is starting being erased from the Earth. I don't know how much longer he'll last in our brains. Poor Sweet

...err...

...Guys, I have a problem: I don't remember what we were talking about a few seconds ago. Do you have the same problem too?

I just had to ask:

I could've sworn the posts where people screenshotted him as logged in preceded the ones where people tweeted responses to his "challenge" back to him. But alas I am not detective GAF enough to prove this.

Such a terrible analogy.

So fucking bad. "Sometimes the electricity goes out. I will not purchase a vacuum."

The vacuum ABSOLUTELY NEEDS electricity to run. If a vacuum could be made that easily didn't require electricity, then yes, you'd be a fucking fool to purchase a vacuum that needed electricity. That's not the case, and games don't NEED to be always online. What a dolt.

The phone analogy is just as bad. With a cell phone the connection IS THE SERVICE. With a video game, always on is a superfluous, tangential OPTION/RESTRICTION, that holds the potential to needlessly interrupt the service. Big difference.

They seriously couldn't deny such reports? I think it doesn't take much to see what that implies.

That comment doesn't solve the issue and the shitstorm at hand in the slightest.

Yeah. Agree.

That's the problem. I don't see any reason for mandating always on. There are reasons to encourage consumers to stay online all the time (i.e. automatic patching, updates, downloading of interesting demos) but what reasons is there to force it besides piracy protection and feeding people targeted advertisements?

Plenty products leverage the internet but many don't just stop working because of a wonky (or in many cases, unobtainable) internet connection.

Oh, Microsoft.
This is a hit that you should definitely think about trying to repair.

Maybe a quick media show?
An explanation on the concept of always-online?
Some more details about the console?
A guide of the future of Xbox Infinity Live?
Nope?
You sure?

Alrighty then.

Not necessarily, when Halo 2/Halo 3 popped on the Steam registry, Stinkles/Frankie denied it's existence and said there were no plans in porting Halo 3 anywhere.

Microsoft never outright confirms or denies rumors or allegations, they have the most stubborn poker face out there.

When someone like Gies says something dumb I wish more members would post respectful criticism of his opinion without resorting to personal insults. It makes it a whole lot easier for people to dismiss neogaf when we spend pages and pages piling on one guy with post like 'this guy is an idiot, how does this guy have a job' etc. Yes he takes some very questionable stances but the response here is disproportionate.

MS can't say a single thing since they haven't announced the system yet. They wouldn't address it.

I think the issue is that he is paid to offer his opinion. He's paid to write. He's paid to comment. Something as big is this, picked up by non-gaming media even ... and he's done nothing. It says a lot.

If you can't put a few comments in a thread of 1000's to make a constructive statement on the matter then you aren't doing your job. And if you can only sling insults at others trying to find out more then you aren't only not doing your job, but you're doing the company you represent a disservice.

I can understand the criticism, I just do not agree that he should be beholden to the posters in this thread to engage in discourse, especially in its current state. He's paid to write articles for Polygon, if I'm not mistaken, to attract views. And he has gotten the attention of the fastest moving thread on GAF currently without even posting here.

Not that anything I said will blunt the intensity of the folks posting in this thread. They're gonna do whatever, almost regardless of what Gies says or does.

And still no denial of always online.
You can't deny something that's true and then go back on your denial afterwards.
By not saying anything, they're pretty much confirming what we already know to be the truth.

Hopefully the Durango comes in at a purchase price that will make people not care about "always online" and "one-time activation" games. If not, well... I wouldn't want to be Microsoft.

really ? why do i find that very fucking hard to believe MS?

I think it's just funny that in 2013 in the age of the internet companies still feel it is necessary to deny at all costs. Just say, "We're working on the successor to the fantastic Xbox 360 and we will have more information about this subject and more at a future date and time."

Pretending your product doesn't exist when it's OBVIOUS it fucking does is just insane.

Fixed.

Anybody else wish they could be a fly on the wall at Sony's executive meetings next week?

Kaz probably took the whole gang out for drinks tonight!

It's happening. MS would have flatout denied it if nothing was happening.

Always online is happening.

Hey remember when Sony used to deny that PS4 was even a thing a few months ago? Something, something, PS3 hitting its stride and stuff. MS is just sticking to their "Not commenting on rumors and speculation" policy. Doesn't really confirm or deny anything.

Do people on GAF overreact? Totally. Do people on GAF sometimes revel in Schadenfreude a bit too much? Definitely.

Does that mean Gies can dismiss opinions that don't match his instead of doing his job and investigating both sides? No, it doesn't. Sure, forums can be weird, noisy, and whiny, but that doesn't mean they don't have a point.

to answer that is to confirm that the next xbox exist

Not necessarily. They could dismiss the claim without acknowledging the existence of the console. The language they use is very telling.

We have not made any announcements about our product roadmap, and have no further comment on this matter."

This implies it is always online, but also leaves room for the opposite to be true.
