SNES Game Collecting (Tips, discussion, and info for like minded collectors)

My latest pickups. Kiki Kaikai: Nazo no kuro manto (aka Pocky and Rocky 1), Kiki Kaikai: Tsukiyo zoushi (aka Pocky and Rocky 2), and Seirei Densetsu Lickle (aka Little Samson). Pocky and Rocky 1/2 weren't too bad as I got 1 for 2,000 yen and 2 for 3,000 yen. That's the cheapest I've seen them for. Boxed copies are much much more expensive.
Oh I'm glad I found a copy of Little Samson!

Well you could always just play the Genesis version of Madden 96!
I picked up the Genesis versions of Madden 94 and Bill Walsh College Football, not too long ago.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=47835889&postcount=1497

How much was Lickle and where did you find it? I've been scouring stores in the country for cheaper rare games and have found fabulous deals at Book Offs and recycle stores, but I hit up the Super Potato stores in Osaka from time to time. I've been doing my best to comb Hokuriku and am now looking at Hanshin for good SFC, GBA, and FC game stores.

As long as its not text heavy, you can just import the sfc version and save cash that way.
I have been buying up a ton of SFC carts. Some times the price discrepancy is crazy. I realize Aero Fighters is a special case, but I mean I just got a copy of Sonic Wings for $11.

So I've been tempted by Harvest Moon yet again, and then this thought occurred to me. Of all the Harvest Moon games that have been made, is Harvest Moon SNES considered to be the best or even top-tier among them all? If it's just mediocre, then that would really help me to talk myself out of dropping way too much cash on the game.
Personally, I think it's a top tier Harvest Moon game, But that's due to the simplicity. There is a lot less stuff to do. So if you like a whole ton of stuff to do, YMMV. Most people seem to prefer Harvest Moon 64. I adore Friends of Mineral Town, and recommend that one highly.

I personally don't think it would be worth the $150 or whatever it goes for, but it is probably worth buying if you can get it for around half that or less.

It's absolutely top tier and for the exact reason you stated. It doesn't overthink itself. I do still think HM64 is the best one, followed by the SNES, Gameboy, and MM. A Wonderful Life should be commended for it's creativity and willingness to think outside the box and try something new, but the end product just had too many issues to work completely. I wouldn't mind of some of it's ideas reappeared in the future though. Never played Friends of Mineral Town.

Responses like this hurt my wallet. Other than the high price, the only thing I can think of to talk myself out of trying to get it is the battery maybe one day dying and erasing my save.

I have never played 64 but I will definitely buy it someday based on how well loved it is. Friends of Mineral Town is a remake of Back to Nature but the graphics are more like the SNES game. It is definitely worth a play, I think it would end up pretty high on your list.

Found some sweet ones today:

Been looking locally for Super Metroid for a while. Super Bomberman 2 looks cool too.

The one obstructed by stickers is Fatal Fury Special

It's craaaaaaaay that you haven't played 64 dude. I can't even finish the others anymore because I always compare them negatively to it

I have played quite a few Harvest Moon games, including the Rune Factory spin off and while I liked RF3, none of the games match the SNES one. I recognize it's pretty darn simplistic compared to the others but it's such a good game despite that and still very much enjoyable that it still holds up to this day...for me, it is the best Harvest Moon game.

WHICH SUCKS because I know it's so expensive...=(

I pretty much solely use japangamestock. Take advantage of their buy 3 get 1 free on loose carts for Famicom and Super Famicom. If you're looking for something on the less common side of things, a lot of times they won't have it, though.

No idea about the second website.

I've used Japangamestock once and had a great experience. I got Tetris battle gaiden for like $18 shipped and it looks flawless. Better than the eBay prices at the time and it shipped quickly.

Nice, thanks folks :)

I have a question folks, about craigslist. How do I contact a person concerning an ad? Do I just press reply and go through the craigslist.org email address? I've never used the site before. Also, are craigslist ads safe to buy from? Basically, will I get jumped if I meet up with someone to buy something?

No, but anything's possible.

I've had about 6-8 orders through gameofjapan. I had no problems. Items were as described and shipped with care. The only thing is their prices on some stuff is ridiculous, but you can find some good deals their too. Sometimes it's better to cross-check the price at their ebay store hit-japan.

Cool, thanks for the info. It's nice to know of these two sites now :)

While I'm at it has anyone used GenkiVideoGames.com? I think they're based in the UK so that could be handy.

Hi yall, posted in this thread before with a question on AC adapters and wanted to say thanks to anyone who answered. Don't have one yet but will try to get one soon.

Anywayz: I posted a video of my NES/SNES/N64 Collections on my YouTube Channel so if you wanna check it out, you can watch it at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=za2wHcxDlYc

Skip to 3:00 to see the SNES Games.

I don't have pictures now, but here is my collection:

Yoshi's Island
Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
Mario All Stars
Yoshi's Cookie
Super Adventure Island
Super Adventure Island (No idea how I got two lol)
Super Gameboy
StarFox

All of them except Starfox are games that I kept from my childhood. The others that I had including the DKC games, SMW, and more I probably sold off unfortunatly. :( Maybe they are still around here somewhere, I still have a few places I haven't looked, but I am pretty sure they are gone. So mad at myself heh.

The only game I bought in recent years if StarFox a couple months ago from a seller on amazon who had the UGC preinstalled with artwork for four extra dollars which was cool. I can't order from ebay or find anywhere locally that sells old games at a reasonably price around me yet, do amazon is my only option outside of trading someone in the BST thread with a amazon card.. Only really started looking. Probably won't get anymore games until atleast July or so.

I wanna get mostly games that are never coming to the VC due to liscensing or whatever. So the DKC games. (Unless the GBA versions come out on WiiU VC.) Demon's Crest (lol too pricey.) Earthbound. (...please come to NA WiiU VC...please...) Sim City, Mario Paint if I can get the mouse and stuff for cheap (haven't looked it up yet), F-Zero sealed just because, and more I am forgetting.

Might collect some of my favorite games like SMW, AlttP, Super Metroid, Final Fantasy IV, and more. Depends on how much they are when I have spare money for them. Still gotta get an AC adapter for my SNES for it to work. Wanna play StarFox soon. Might just go with a Supaboy since I don't really like playing on a TV anymore.

I am on page 48 (50PPP) and plan to read through this entire thread. I love seeing everyones collections so keep posting them! :)

craigslist has a button to send them an email, but some people prefer a phone call or text instead.

I usually meet with craigslist people in a walmart parking lot, although I have had someone come to my house when we traded consoles.

Here's my SNES collection

IMG_1780.JPG

Oh and that Starfox is factory sealed (it had the original Montgomery Ward sticker on it). I paid $2 for it. Lady brought it into my local Play N Trade, they would only give her $1 store credit, she declined and I offered her $2 cash when she left and she agreed.

I've got the following games

Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy II
Final Fantasy III
Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest
F-Zero
Illusion of Gaia
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (my original cartridge)
Mega Man X
Mega Man X2
Mega Man X3
Secret of Mana
Super Mario RPG
Tecmo Super Bowl III
StarFox
Super Metroid
A SNES model 2
A Super Famicom
Super Famicom controller x2
Retrobit SNES wireless controller x2

If anyone is interested in those cases, they're called universal game cases. Think back to the old cases that VHS tapes used to come in and you'll get the general idea. The cover art can be printed at The Cover Project.

These are the wireless controllers

I have been tempted to print covers for cases, but I noticed a few of my SNES games do not have the "custom" covers available for download. It would drive me crazy to not have the whole collection consistent in design.

Five auctions tonight on Earthbound, and not a single one of them worked out for me. Passed on two since they seemed kinda rich. Two of them I tried sniping on, but was outbid within the final five seconds somehow (one within two seconds of my bid, the other had two bids within one second of mine). I've been told that there are people who use programs to auto-raise on impossibly small timeframes... I really hope I wasn't beaten by one of those. A fifth went over $200, and screw that noise.

Dammit, this is going to be much harder than I thought.

I regret selling mine on GAF a few years back but I needed the money. D: I wish I could have at least finished the game before selling it off.

if you're meeting someone in a public place, i don't think there's much to fear from Craigslist, ive done so numerous times myself.

ShadowHog - that sucks man, i wish you luck. i wonder if people still use scripts for sniping sometimes?

What's really pissing me off is that it seems the price was closer to $150-170 not two months ago. There's a definite spike in auction prices, and it's recent. This is despite "Buy Earthbound" saying we should be in a downswing right now, since prices are cheaper mid-year, and we're closer to mid-year now than we are the holidays.

There are two more relatively-reasonable auctions tomorrow (because $150 isn't reasonable but I'll just overlook that for now), but I doubt I can snipe on them because I'll be too busy visiting Dad after his cancer surgery, and this game isn't so important to me that it'd trump that. Sucks that I'll miss out on them, but...

The only game I don't have a case for is Tecmo Super Bowl, but I'm not to concerned about it.

My next project is to move my NES games over, but I need to modify the cases to get those to fit.

Ask someone here to create one (some) for you. Jake Tower does some pretty good looking covers.

Maybe you'll get lucky and spot it in a thrift/market on the return from the visit? Its definitely possible so dont lose hope either way.

Don't have time to visit a thrift store; the hospital is up in Baltimore, which is pretty far from my home, and I have no less than two others depending on me for the ride up. eBay is pretty literally my only chance to get this cheap.

I have been routinely checking my local thrift store, though... although lately it seems like console games tend to get bundled with the console, which is annoying when I only want to buy the games. Had to pass up on Mega Man X, Donkey Kong Country 2 etc because I didn't want a $120 SNES to go with it.

I don't think sniping is a very effective method on eBay anymore, what with their auto-bid system in place.

The auto-bid's always been in place, IIRC. The issue is that if I don't snipe, somebody else will snipe me, I've found. Hell, I was sniped while sniping.

Ah, well I used to snipe a lot way back when, but nowadays I just use the auto-bid function and just roll with it. I figure eventually my patience will be rewarded.

'Course, in regards to EarthBound, I got my copy back when $70~ was the norm. Boy do I not regret that purchase.

...auto bidding what now

and yeah honestly, i know genesis games are less popular but shit's so bad now that if something nice ends with no one sniping (especially during the day) im honestly kinda surprised

I bought a house last month so I can finally have a game room!

bWteuFP.jpg

Got this for $5 at a swap meet. Pretty cool to have my entire game collection (minus Wii and WiiU) on one wall. I was so sick of using Ikea bookshelves.

Finally, my TV is a FV-300 Trinitron. I got it for $60 based on advice from this thread. S-video looks breathtaking on it.

^that looks fantastic! between the Super Metroid poster & power glove with the kongas, out setups have some stuff in common too, heh

great game room man. where'd you get that little Katamari prince?

Damn. Love the Super Metroid and Secret of Mana posters. I need to look through my Nintendo Powers and see if there are any cool posters in them. Think they're all gone, though.

I wish everyone would just agree not to pay over $50 for Earthbound.

There are like 60 auctions up a day, what is wrong with people?

It was an Etsy.com seller. About $10 back in 2006 I think.

Your game room looks nice. I love that Super Metroid poster. I really want a game room of my own.

Super Metroid is Volume 57
Secret of Mana is Volume 53
Donkey Kong Country is Volume 64

I got them on eBay, but I still felt like a monster removing the posters. I wanted to do a Castlevania poster but the Castlevania III poster is boring and the later ones are a larger size.

The game room is so much fun. Unfortunately, once we decide to have a second child, it is gone lol.

I'm jelly! Love the room. Hope to have one as good some day. :)

Just checked my Nintendo Powers, they do have their posters still. Only cool poster I do have is that Secret of Mana one (the fuck is with that red dragon, is there anything in the game that looks like that?). Have an issue with a cool Mega Man X poster also, but it has a tear in it.

I have always used the web service AuctionSniper. It doesn't matter when you bid, bidding services can be set to bid at pretty much anytime up to the final two seconds with accuracy. It isn't an "auto raise". Those bids were likely entered into the bidding service days ago. You were outbid by a proxy bid just as if someone were sitting the their computer typing it in manually. The fact is that your bid was just too low. The time you bid or how the other people bid has no bearing.

It's pretty bullshit that $180-190 for Earthbound is "too low".

I'm gonna put up a saved search for BINs less than that... see if something pops up. I really shouldn't rush this.

This is a bit off-topic, but Parallacs's post reminded me that I should ask about it. Is there a certain model and/or size of Trinitron/WEGA that is considered the best? I've been thinking about getting a CRT for older games that require them like Virtua Cop, Point Blank, etc., so I'd like to get GAF's input about what to look for.

You can do better than a Trinitron, actually. Sony BVM and PVM monitors might be worth looking into.
