How can people not like 'Nintendo Games'?

Because they haven't created a decent IP (aside from Rhythm Heaven) since Pikmin. New Super Mario games are half-assed nonsense and the past two mainline Zelda games haven't been up to par. I don't not like Nintendo games, they just don't excite me for the reasons listed above.

They either like very few genres or simply do not like Nintendo. There's not much more to it than that. I don't know why people are getting afraid to just admit it.

I'm not saying that there aren't certain games that people cannot appreciate. I for example am not really a fan of the Metroid Prime series, despite it's high praise but I find it almost inconcievable that there are people out there who genuinely don't like ANY Nintendo franchises.

There are so many Nintendo made games that are released to high praise spanning a multitude of genres that it seems almost impossible for such a large number of people to make the blanket statement that they "don't like Nintendo games." Granted there may be a tiny tiny fraction of a percentage of people that, even if they played every Nintendo game ever release, would not enjoy them but again surely this is only a tiny fraction.
So my question is, are people just "judging a book by it's cover" or are there are actually reasons why certain people dislike Nintendo games as a whole?

Take it as grossly over-generalizing to convince oneself that a large and varied library of titles is not worth playing.
Maybe because money is short and its easier to ignore if you think you're not missing anything, maybe you dont have time to invest on a diferent system... whatever it is, most people saying they "dont like nintendo games" either dont entirely believe what they say, have a silly chip on their shoulders or are so misinformed they dont even know what they are talking negatively about.
 
Sometimes is just a matter of taste, sometimes it's just ignorance or brand-loyalty

This applies also to Sony and Microsoft
 
There are few developers out there that make me feel like playing a "Nintendo game". Maybe it's not a genre, but I can still feel it. For example I really like Batman Arkham Asylum/City but it doesn't feel "Nintendo", the same happens with many other beautiful games out there. I love the Metal Gear Solid series, I love Halo 2, I love Valve but man, I love Nintendo games.
And yes, some of their games sucks too.
 
Also, I don't think a lot of people who "don't like Nintendo games" have tried all of Nintendo's games. I'm sure if they did, they'd like at least one or two. But also people know what they like and go off of how games look or how it's marketed, and a lot of folks simply don't have the time to experiment and see if they might like something they initially thought they wouldn't.

serious question: Out of curiosity, what kind of genres DO you prefer now?

ALso your statement contradicts yourself, mario and DKC do appeal to you, you just don't find it worth it to invest the money.
 
Well Metroid Prime has a very different feel than Mario. Same goes for Pokemon or Fire Emblem. They also have Monolithsoft as well so really games come in very different flavors from Nintendo even if not from EAD it could be one of the studios that they own. It would be difficult to say that you don't enjoy any Nintendo games if you actually threw away bias and played the games.

I think it also has to do with how you grew up around Nintendo games and if you had siblings/friends to play with. Some of us grew up enjoying Nintendo classics but I also had 4 brothers to choose from whenever playing a Nintendo game. Thats means constant Smash 64 tournaments, Mario Kart Double Dash, Goldeneye. Those memories stick with you and even today playing Nintendoland with a group of people is just pure fun.
 
Lots of replies here from people who didn't read the OP. OP, you're right: "Nintendo games" is not a genre. But I imagine people who say that really mean either they're not fond of Nintendo's big franchises (ie. Mario, Zelda), or they simply aren't interested in enough games to purchase Nintendo consoles.
 
I bought a Wii shortly after launch, played Red Steel and a handful of other games on it, stored it in my flat for about a year, then gave it away. Don't like the underpowered hardware compared to the competition, didn't like the Wiimote, not interested in the tablet either as a gimmick or for the minor freedom of movement it brings, and none of the games look interesting enough to be "system sellers" to me. Also I grew up with Amiga/PC and only played SNES/Mega Drive with friends, so I have no particular attachment to Zelda, Mario et al. Doesn't mean I wouldn't buy some of those games if they were on PC or 360.

You may not like Mario and Zelda, but saying the entire catalog of Nintendo games are "kiddy" titles is sheer ignorance, not say fanboyism (which is the case mostly).

There's a least one of these franchises that will appeal to someone. I really doubt someone will dislike all of these franchises.
 
I've seen people say they only like Nintendo games, which is far crazier.

Personally I dig a few of their franchises, but find their saccharine sweet presentation tiring. I could never get by with only a Nintendo console.
 
Most of their games are too simple, too easy and they feel like they're made for a much younger crowd. As I got older I didn't appreciate that very much.

I do really like the Fire Emblem series though. So much that I've had to fight off some urges to buy a 3DS for it.
 
I don't think it's a matter of whether the games are good or not. Some people focus more on brands when it comes to all types of media meaning they will automatically shut out anything from Nintendo simply because of what the brand is associated with.

There is a time issue with this. When I say I don't like nintendo games, I mean there has not been one nintendo 3ds game that I have enjoyed to date (PAL btw). This does not mean I do not love SMB3 or all the other old games people seem to be referencing.

Tastes change, but I really think the quality and age focus of their games has dropped too. They don't seem to make games for me anymore, so why would I still like them?

Most of Nintendo's current games has far more depth than any of these "mature" games for "older" people.

Even though I ended up buying every Nintendo system in the past 12 years, pretty early might I add, I'm one of those who's not incredibly attached to Nintendo's core output, i.e. pillars such as the Marios (except Kart), the Zeldas, the Metroids, the Animal Crossings, the Pokemons, etc.

I mean, I'll still buy some of them, and can easily appreciate and recognize their quality, I just don't rush out to buy them day 1/ASAP or get overwhelmed with hype and anticipation. You wouldn't believe how many of the classics I've skipped or haven't played yet, even though I had the systems.

I think it something to do with either the genres, the lack of history between me and their franchises (I didn't grow up with them), or a combonation of both.

For example, I'm a Wii U owner, but NSMB U is still sitting somewhere not being played, same goes for Nintendo Land. I literally purchased it for MH, Bayonetta and W101. That said, I'm a big fan of Nintendo's smaller franchises, such FE, AW, and puzzlers (Pushmo, Crashmo, Picross, Puzzle League, etc).

So the long and short of it: I don't hate their big franchises, they just don't sell me on their systems or hype me to tears.
 
But Nintendo does make other genres without using Mario. Unless franchises that were born from meeting specific genre needs [ex: Fire Emblem and Strategy RPG, Pokemon/Xenoblade for traditional RPGs] don't count. Don't know why they wouldn't though.

Example:

Adventure- Metroid, any of their RPGs
Simulation- Pilotwings, Endless Ocean, Nintendogs, Steel Diver
Arcade Shooter- Starfox, Sin and Punishment
RPG- Pokemon, EarthBound, Xenoblade, The Last Story, Golden Sun
Racing- F-zero, Wave Race
Strategy- Pikmin, Fire Emblem, Advance Wars, Battalion Wars
Sports- licensed NBA/MLB games, Excitebike, 1080, Wii-Series
Puzzle- Hotel Dusk, Trace Memory, Brain Training, Tetris DS, Tetris Attack, Picross

The list goes on and on. Not only does Nintendo offer numerous genres, but in some cases many variations on them. And no, they do not have Mario.

Unless someone is shooter-crazy, it might be plausible that Nintendo's grand total of 2 FPSes [Geist and Metroid Hunters] won't catch that crowd. Nintendo knows it isn't their specialty, but that's okay. Maybe some of these fans will find something else to like.

I guess some people just can't enjoy their output because of the way they are designed, look, play or whatever. It's their personal thing so I can't speak for them.

Again, Nintendo games have a high barrier of entry for someone who is only interested in one or two of their games as they would have to buy a Nintendo console/handheld just to play them.

Then you don't know a lot of Nintendo games.

Nintendo has there hands in so much different genre and themes, that not liking them can be build down to: hardware, narrow interest in specific genres (shooter, simulation, etc.) and specific themes (gore, realism, etc.), which Nintendo doesn't cover, and/or not liking there company philosophy ("Games for everybody","Gameplay before narration", etc.).

Which is weird to me, because Sony and Microsoft pretty much have the same fucking games. At least Nintendo is...unique.

But it's not. All you need to do is go through the "Of Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft; which would the industry miss the least?" thread and you'll see plenty of them.

Other people have said that it's the same as not liking Sony games (I'll get to MS in a minute) and I agree. I just feel like almost no one is saying that about Sony games and yet they are saying them about Nintendo games quite a lot recently.

Regarding MS, I suppose it's a little more understandable since (if you exclude RareWare) their 1st party output is extremely limited compared to the other two of the big three. Either way I'd not be one to say I dislike MS games because I do enjoy Halo and the first Gears of War (along with Banjo Kazooie Nuts N' Bolts and Viva Pinata.)

There was a time when I played exclusively Nintendo consoles (until I was around 13 or so) and since then I have moved on to owning all 3 consoles this past generation as well as a Vita and 3DS (still haven't got a Wii U.) I feel like you're implying people only think Nintendo games are good because those people only reside on Nintendo consoles but that's somewhat ridiculous to me. There are plenty of people who enjoy non-Nintendo games but still feel like Nintendo certainly stands out in many areas of gaming.

edit- I should say Nintendo GAMES, the developers. Nintendo as a overall company, philosophically and everything... they're pretty sketchy and punchable
 
The different taste argument is rubbish; it's more like a reluctance to taste. A good game is a good game, period. It might not be your favourite game, or something you would play super often, but surely there is at least one Nintendo franchise that some individual could enjoy.

Saying you don't like Nintendo is like flat out saying you don't like Pixar movies. Sure, they're not all fantastic, but there are some objectively great ones.

I mean, I would say even though I don't like a ton of Sony's games and the only current MS exclusive I still like is Halo, there are still a couple that I consider to be utterly fantastic. It has nothing to do with taste. Great games have to be acknowledged as great, and they can be enjoyed by anyone if it was actually given a fair chance... and by fair chance I mean play something through all the way.

lol yeah. There are so many better fighters out there than Smash.

People don't have to like something, this includes Nintendo games. It's as simple as that.
 
Now that I see this thread I remember a post here in gaf stating that he would never buy a Nintendo console because it'd too embarrassing to be seen with a kiddy system or something like that :lol

Sad thing is that a lot of people think like that, it's like "oh, no, people will know I like video games!!".
