If the inn has a basement, I want a picture of Iwata in the wall. I don't think it will be too bad, it's going to be something in the background and not something thrown at your face.

I have no problem with memes as long as they are very subtle and fit with the general theme. Like someone brought up in the funding topic IIRC, something like a picture of a wagon riding off into the sunset above the fireplace. Plenty of GAF folks would get it, but to anyone else it's just a picture decorating the inn.

Can agree on the memes. Not that good over a long time.

Having the guests make idle chatter that is subtle referring to GAF would be fun. Like a guest getting called out on hating a tourney even though he have never seen it, or maybe that's a little too vague and common just all across the internet boards but something like that I mean.

A warrior who wore shining crimson red sat upon the robust and worn stool. He gulped the last of his lager and began to berate to the innkeeper about the latest tournament, despite its importance regarding fame and money, all the while boasting that he had been there and done that. His face had been unshaved, and the eyes upon his head had an innocent colour that had escaped warfare. The armour that enfolded his frame seemed untouched.

"It was all handicapped!" he bragged as he gulped the last of the brew, "the risktakers even granted them shields to protect them from my blows! I'd have taken it all had it not been for the brittle sword they gave me!"

Later discussion was held discerning whether he had even stepped foot within the hallowed circle, let alone the gambling dens underneath the stench of sweat and blood of the arenas.

The inn had become so infamous over this continued story that a certain hour of the day had been designated as the Red Hour. The hour when the man had arrived in a drunken stupor and declared himself critical above all others. The Jester's Hour. It was to be a time when drinks were offered at such a low price that they were inconceivable.

"Gods bless the red liar!" they would cry throughout the small hall as they downed their mugs.

The "I don't know how much you know about x (I am an expert)" and "Y just shot themselves in the foot" would be great.

I'm trying to think of an appropriate way to reference GAF gifs and the whole GAF > Internet > GAF thing. Maybe have a magical animated painting on one of the walls, Harry potter style?

GAF-Internet-GAF could be represented with two people talking and saying something like this:

"Have you heard (some news)?"
"Why yes, that story originated at this very Inn"

We could do a shield like this (sorry about my awful photoshop skills)

Here is the web inXile used in the kicktarter for users to suggest stretch goals: https://www.uservoice.com/

We could make a free account. And it uses a very similar approach to what squiddy said of the votes.
That's exactly what I was thinking of.
Of course, we have plenty of time to brain storm and discuss in this thread beforehand.

When it's time to finalise matters, those that have backed are given a set amount of votes and let loose.
I think that while everyone on Gaf should be free to brain storm, only those that have backed the inn should have a vote.

If it's something that people across the Internet can identify with, isn't that a good thing? That way the place won't seem so insular and disconnected from the average player's experience. Even if they don't get the whole context of the joke being able to appreciate the base will make it seem like a cute easter egg.

The Goose and Fox idea is absolutely brilliant.

I also like the Goose and Fox name! I'm definitely of the opinion that any actual internet / GAF references should be kept to a very subtle minimum. The Tome of Evil Lore lying open on a table, Bish the Barkeep, the GAF logo and colours, that sort of thing.

It'll be better and easier once we get some ideas on lore and world details so we can start coming up with actual ideas for the place. I've been in touch with Avellone recently and he said he's working hard to finish up all that stuff at the moment.

I don't want GAF memes. They would appear to be nothing more than rubbish 5-10 years down the track. We can barely remember what we posted 2 weeks ago, let alone what infamous dealings have happened 5 years ago.

I like the Goose and Fox Inn idea.

Also agree, and definitely like the Goose and Fox. I'd prefer just "The Goose and Fox".

at the very least 'Believe' should be incorporated into this somehow. Other than that I'm not much of a fan of the idea of using Gaf memes either

Thread resurrection. I don't want to keep my incompetence of creating an official thread in a timely fashion to the lack of amazing discussion.

Fire away! Where is your god now?! Trojita is your new god!

As always, this belongs to all of you and I don't want any roadblocks.
So not really sure how to ask this because I really do not care if we get "something" or that I'm mistaken.

But the people who helped funned the inn, do they get something "extra"?
Or am I mistaken for something else?

AGAIN NOT LOOKING FOR ANY FAVORS OR SPECIAL TREATMENT JUST WONDERING

^btw I'll happily throw in some money for the GAF inn if needed. I kinda feel bad for not doing that during the PE kickstarter

As for vague "videogame forum"/GAF references, I like the idea of three guys sitting in a corner arguing bitterly over which is the best weapon to own/use: the sword, the spear, or the axe (or w/e).

If people are saying GAF memes are considered dumb, then we must agree putting NeoGAF members in is just as dumb (especially the ones I dislike). Humorous depictions of people can be just as fleeting.

EDIT: I imagine if you don't tip your server, someone notices and complains out loud. It quickly escalates into a brawl between two sides in the tavern.

Should be arguing about

1. Glaive
2. Arbir
3. Flamberge

First one talks about weapon one, and so on. Small things like that.

I can agree to that but I think that putting in people is a bit more subtle instead of memes and also easier. Having Evilore and Bishoptl as references should be enough, don't have to outright name them that either. Though should be considered having Shagg in there too somewhere to honor him for doing this.

But the people who helped funned the inn, do they get something "extra"?
Or am I mistaken for something else?

I think Shagg mentioned in the Inn thread that he was trying to talk with Obsidian to get a bunch of digital extras to hand out to people (instead of the physical products), don't remember if he made contact though. Not that it matters for me as I would already get it most of it through my pledge.

My two cents:

We can't expect many custom assets to be made for the tavern. Maybe a sign and little more. Speaking of the sign, what did you have in mind? Something like this (apologies for the crude sketch)?

VjTniHn.png

I like the idea of the tavern entrance being locked by a long queue of people, so the only way to get in would be to bypass it. Then, once inside, you could find a hidden minidungeon below (even just a bunch of corridors with skeletons of banned customers and some monsters, with one treasure at the end).

Also, no overt GAF memes, but a few subtle references to GAF or games in NPC dialogue would be alright. I like some of the stuff already mentioned before:
- NPC tells a crazy story, ending with "Believe!"
- Other NPC tells him said story originated in that very tavern
- NPC saying he's ready to ride towards the sunset
- NPC is a bearded muscular guy (not a custom model) drinking beer and ignoring the player
Simple stuff like this. No need to waste much time for inside jokes few would get.

The religious aspect of the lore lends itself well to sneaking a non-jarring 'Believe' reference in, for sure. Like, a small group of people who are there trying to promote their chosen God. "Berath is the gateway to eternal peace - believe! His is the path that leads to the cycle's end - believe!" And the rest of the group echoes "Believe!" Etc.

Edit: Nice sign!

How about having two distinct sections in the bar? One where adventurers gather to talk about adventuring and the other about the world in general along with depressing news.

The Goose and Fox is a great idea.

Very nice sign Jocchan. Why "Goose and Fox" ? Can't think of anything else for the G and F?

Also, I just want to reiterate den of cunts needs to be in there.

We need a drunken Dyack trying to rally support for his cause, demanding to know if people are for or against. Later he can been seen outside telling the queue of people waiting to get in what a shit place the inn is.

Sidequest where you can gain ownership or become a partner of the inn. Upon completion, unlocks the Evilore Achievement.

Oh, and fights need to break out every hour.

I guess it would be nice if you could play games in the GAF inn, because GAF is all about games after all.

So stuff like drinking games, cockfighting, bullbaiting, ...

There should be a quest that involves a big company trying to buy the inn. The innkeeper has refused to sell on several occasions. The company has sent assassins to take care of the owner. The player wakes up in the middle of the night when he hears some shady figures prowling outside his window. They are going for the innkeepers life, the only problem is that you're not the inn keeper. They have the wrong room! You kill them, but the ruccus wakes everyone up. The innkeeper identifies the men as hired muscle for a big company and wants revenge. You are most willing to help.

One of the rewards could be a red mage robe or something like that.

I think the Neogaf logo needs to be somewhere in or outside the Inn. Make it look hand-drawn and using the game's color palette so it doesn't look out of place. It could either be the Inn's signage or some painting on the Inn's walls.

I think the best suggestion yet was to use the GAF logo as a base and then try to paint a fox as the orange part and a goose on the grey/white part so it looks like the fox is attacking the goose. Though that might be a little too much on the nose.

Standing as a bastion against the wild world is the lopsided, ramshackle, round tower known as the Goose And Fox. Stop here weary traveler for a cup of brew and a game of chance.

The main common room should be busy with a different games being played at every table. The Goose And Fox is known around the realms for it's games and its dedicated game players. Potential players come from far and wide to test their skills against the Goose and Fox's best.

In the basement is a taxidermists dream; stuffed creatures and monsters. It is a common stop for budding adventurers hoping to get an edge when exploring the wilds. Evilore, the tavern owner, is known to pay for unusual creature's corpses and may even send heroes on a quest to get an especially rare specimen.

Really love Goose and Fox idea. Also, I remember someone suggested adding A Book of Evil Lore. Loved that one as well.

Yeah Tome of Evilore ..also Bish the barkeep with his ban hammer behind the counter(just restating someone else's idea). Honestly the more references the better. Just don't make them stupidly obvious or out of place.
