Wii U System Update Details

The best part for me is the background installations/update downloads and the downloads continuing after the system is off.

I didn't see that one coming.

The PS3 allows you to automatically download updates(it probably does games as well but I've never tried it) while your console if off if you have PS+.

Lol why would they charge for something like that? Do they need extra servers for standby download or what?

Very nice update.

Besides faster load times, my favorite thing is being able to boot right to Wii mode. As of now my Wii U is mostly being used for Wii functionality so the added convenience is a plus.

Well, since no one else wants to make the thread about this...

In yesterday's Nintendo Direct, it was announced the following improvements and features will be added to Wii U following the system update next week:

  • Loading times will be improved when switching between software or when returning to the Wii U menu.

[*]The ability to copy and move data between USB drives will be added.
  • The Wii U will automatically install new software that you have downloaded in the background while playing a game.
  • Software updates will automatically be downloaded (even without starting the software).
  • You can immediately access Wii Mode while the Wii U is starting up if you hold the B button.

[*]The Wii U will continue downloading and installing software even if the system is turned off.
  • The Wii U Virtual Console will be added the day after the update.

Does this mean I can take saves to other Wii U consoles yet?

The continually downloading thing is going to help in making sure it doesn't feel severely dated by the time the PS4 and 720 come out because that is going to be a big part of their always on features. Hopefully it isn't like PS+ where it turns the console on at a scheduled hour every day. Could be though since i'm not aware of the Wii U being an "always on" console in the first place.

How about an SD card menu on the main Wii U menu so I don't have to boot into Wii mode to play my VC games?

I think the update will be Tuesday and VC comes Weds, seems like the 30 cent VC games have been coming on Weds, then Thursday will be the regular Nintendo download stuff which Rayman online is coming then. But thats just my guess

How do you not care about the speed when switching and launching stuff from the home menu? This is one of the biggest issues the system has, and a helluva a lot of people agree.

Because ultimately it doesn't bother me at all. A couple of seconds here and there is something I can live with. Not being able to know when my friends log on without hitting a button is annoying as hell. My level of toleration for this is pretty high.

Not saying that people don't have a right to complain about it, but it's just not something that is even on my radar.

Nice Nintendo, keep adding those features so once I get a Wii U I won't have to worry at all, also, release a new Metroid.

Awesome update. Maybe Nintendo can SLOWLY turn this Titanic afloat with good stuff like this. It's ALMOST as good as any current gen OS.

Wants the largest console games publisher to avoid Nintendo's platforms.

Unlikely. The FS is encrypted individually for each machine.

The WiiU will most likely follow in the Wii WiiConnect24 trails - the ARM portion together with the internal flash and networking will be able to function while everything else is powered off.

A proper account system
Improve their servers speed
Cross play/buy(lol) with 3DS
Improve the system stability
Second Wii U gamepad support

:p

Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if a few of those things actually happened in the summer update.

This too.

I didn't see that one coming.

Really? They already talked about buying from the eShop away from home via your smartphone or 3DS, you didn't think they'd expect you to leave the console on while you're gone so the download will start when you buy it away from home, did you? This function is merely laying the groundwork for that.

Never had much issue outside of switching to the system settings, but I'll take the auto install and continuous downloading for sure.

So it will essentially be....always online?

run! The sky is falling.

can't wait for this update. Will make my user experience infinitely better.
Ha, the Wii was as well. It was even called Connect 24. If only we can get that update that allows you to only play online...

Good news with the automatic install for updates.

Another thing I'd like to see is a function to completely shut off the GamePad in Wii U games, not just the screen. It still drains the battery somewhat even though the screen is off.

Solid features there. I'll be glad to have them once I get around to picking one of these up for Bayonetta 2.

If it were me, they'd kill off the Wara Wara Plaza from the startup. Make it a subset of Miiverse, and make Miiverse the initial boot to service.

Considering how they want to update Miiverse to include launch game icons, jump to level, jump to lobby etc functions, it just doesn't make sense to make Miiverse a secondary app.

Wara Wara could remain as a welcome screen to Miiverse.

At least give me the option to boot to what I want: Miiverse-Wara Wara-Disk

Now: let me buy things via a web-based eShop on my computer and let it download to my Wii U while I'm not at home and everything is fine

For the next update I hope they get rid of the home dashboard and merge all the app icons in the bottom part of the home menu so it works the same as in the 3DS.

I hope it includes other improvements, particularly Multi-audio output. I want to use HDMI for video and red/white rca cables for audio like I do on 360 and PS3. (old hdtv)

I don't think it does.

I want the console to switch on the TV via HDMI but I think they won't add it since "you can switch on the TV with the gamepad". But that is still unnecessary long winded fiddling with menus (push TV, touch switch source, move through long list of sources, confirm, push TV again to make the menu go away again) and most often I don't even play with the gamepad but with the remote and CC.

We should probably raise these requests in Miiverse.

Maturity, bitches.
Anyways this going by this update, I think the summer one would have a Miiverse update to accommodate the 3DS and smartphone Miiverses and add even more features to online/community/friend-messaging.
They update Miiverse all the time. Anything Miiverse related in a major update would be system related rather than app related.

The instant boot into Wii Mode is a nice feature to have. Played and finished Last Story last weekend and going to go back to Xenoblade so I'll be taking advantage of that.

What about the people with no internet in their house?

They are screwed with firmware 1.0?

Please understand.

Games usually include the latest update (or at least the most recent they need in order to work) like it happens on the Wii and I presume 360 and PS3 as well.

They should update their servers. Kirby's taking me six minutes to download on a 50mb/s connection, file size is 37mb.
There are no servers they could update, Nintendo uses Akamai. And Akamai sometimes decides to connect you to a slow mirror for some reason. Pausing and resuming the downloads seems to fix this sometimes.

The Wii U was fast enough before this update, IMHO. I never had any problems whit the loading times of the OS. The interface is sp elaborated that you save time, even if the loading times are a little bit longer.

I don't really have a problem with it either. Doesn't mean it cant get faster though!

Personally, I can't wait for this update - the feature to download updates while the console is in standby is great - no more patching Dragon Quest X when I'd rather be playing! Brilliant!
