ArtHands

Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch
There are several reports that the new stocks for red and blue vita has arrived in japan, including on amazon

Wondering whether this will bring vita back up or at least stable .

The restock, budget re-release of several older titles, and golden week should give it a decent bump for the next few weeks...and then a free fall after golden week

especially if a new DQM title got announced for the 3DS.

He is talking about this: https://twitter.com/trademark_bot/statuses/325307814673268736

Square Enix filled a new trademark, and it might be related to DQM2.

I don't see how that would impact Vita sales, something like Persona or Yakuza maybe, but not Dragon Quest.

Yeah that was the case last week too but are there any big releases coming out soon?

No big releases that I know of coming soon, but next week will have a lot of niche titles and a ton of budget reprints. The reprints may have some effect on sales... hard to say. (edit: my bad, the sales of these will be reported two weeks from now)

Either way the 3DS will definitely be in the spotlight over Vita in the next few weeks, seeing as one of its tentpole releases of 2013 just came out. :p

I really don't think a bunch of "greatest hits" release for the Vita is going to do anything especially considering those games mainly aren't great or hits.

I'm surprised that the Wonderswan had more than 2x the SW sales of the Vita in its first six months than the Vita had in its first year.

So 2012 for the 3DS had the most software sales out of any non-DS handheld ever? That's pretty amazing frankly.

I'm surprised that the Wonderswan had more than 2x the SW sales of the Vita in its first six months than the Vita had in its first year.

Well Vita's first year was what... 2 weeks?

Well, it's clear that Sony is trying to replicate the MH craziness on its platform, by pushing third party software that might resemble Capcom game. Problem is, the userbase didn't show really a huge interest in those games. SS might not even reach 200k units, and it was heavily, heavily promoted.

While there was the double pack and digital sales, I feel your point still holds if we switch to 300K.

In my mind the biggest problem Sony has right now in terms of keeping the Vita a living platform is getting a Fall line-up. Unless I'm forgetting something, so far the only "big" (in Vita terms) releases coming up are Toukidan in June and God Eater 2 near the end of Summer.

They need something to follow that up with to inspire confidence that the platform will keep getting at least somewhat notable titles.

To be fair those games were released way before the price cut, so now that Vita's userbase has grown bigger those games may have sold better.

On the other hand I don't know whether those budget reprints will be enough to boost hardware sales dramatically.

I know this prediction is a way off but I predict Vita will sell less software in 2014 than the Wonderswan did in 1999.

No one has talked about it in awhile but last I remember the used market for Vita games isn't exactly lacking in stock.

Laguna is back ?

It's just a prediction... The vita isn't exactly setting the world on fire and it would have to sell 1.45 million software to match the Wonderswan in 1999. Considering it only sold 1.9 million units in 2012 I don't think it's impossible to drop to such a number given that it probably won't have many high profile releases in 2014. Maybe if FFX is 2014 then it'll manage.

Without being effectively discontinued that would be pretty hard to manage.

Not that being effectively discontinued is off the table however.

Less than a million next year? I sort of doubt it. By then the Sony faithful otaku publishers will have moved on from the PSP fully and it'll start getting those types of games most likely. Hell it already has started getting those games.

You don't think that if 2014 has few high profile releases the Vita couldn't drop 450,000 units of software from 2012 even without being discontinued? I feel the 3DS will have huge momentum going into 2014 that could effectively curb-stomp the Vita's software sales even further.
Not to mention the Wii U will probably be selling at least marginally better and the PS4 will be out. If there aren't many high profile releases I could see it happening.

1999 total: 1,450,380 (unless I'm just reading this wrong)

I also feel a good chunk of those Otaku games will make the jump to the 3DS as some already have.

He's predicting less than 1.4. Its possible depending on what series come to the Vita and how many games it gets but its not likely.

If a platform has almost no high profile releases, my personal opinion is that it has been effectively discontinued.

For example, the Xbox 360 is on sale in Japan, but it has not been a viable or seriously supported product for years.

Vita software for 2013 will be somewhere between 2-3 million. Maybe 3+ if something "big" releases.

A direct sequel comes out five months later and does 1.6 million in one country in less than a month. Amazing. Shows what a manga/anime/game trifecta can do at its peak.

If the Vita's big releases for the most part are niche titles that max out in the 50-100k range and it only gets a few of those series its could happen.

Nice update Chris.

Do we know if FFX could be released in time for the holidays? I think it'll get a modest boost from that.

It most likely will be but being an "HD" remake, not having FFX-2 bundled in and the PS3 version being a much better value on a better platform will really hurt this release.

Well yeah, but as Vita standards go it's one of the console's biggest releases for the second half of this year of the line up we know so far. And it may not even make it for the holiday season? Do we know roughly when it's slated?
Maybe I'm overestimating the power of a starved userbase but I feel like FFX and FFX 2 could get a combined sales of 150k on the Vita if they launch during the holidays.

most (if not almost all) vita owners apparently also own a ps3, why would they separate vita games over a combined ps3 version
