2,000 is huge ... sympathy to all involved.

Is there a way to reverse this gif?

In recent weeks, EA has aligned all elements of its organizational structure behind priorities in new technologies and mobile. This has led to some difficult decisions to reduce the workforce in some locations.

Damn. If I was working at Bioware/Criterion or any non mobile focused studio I'd start looking for work elsewhere

Hope everyone there lands on their feet. EA head honchos may be a bunch of grade a assholes but they have some talented people working for them.

I wonder where The Old Republic fits into the company's new strategic direction. I'd think that F2P makes it viable.

So far they haven't been touching those studios (well, on BioWare, the core Edmonton/Montreal ones) since they're part of their AAAA strategy.

Like EA Montreal largely closed, but BioWare Montreal is the part of it that still exists.

Sounds like Black Box, Danger Close and Montreal are pretty much RIP then.
Yeah most of those have been dissolved already.

What remains of Black Box is working on PopCap's FPS game or are part of the Frostbite Vancouver team.

Danger Close I covered earlier, and Montreal presumably had staff shifted to BioWare Montreal and straight laid off.

I seem to remember a few years ago they went through similarly massive layoffs to streamline operations. Did they restaff up since then or is this trimming even more?

Hope it doesn't affect DICE because I'm one of the noobs there... I'd be screwed for sure.

On the plus side DICE has been expanding lately, so it wouldn't make any sense to do layoffs now.

if you're with DICE now and havent heard anything, i guess you're safe.

No fan of Gies, but don't please lie about stuff he says. Or the context in which it's being said. Or anyone, for that matter.

Visceral? I could see them being a target after DS3 "underperformed".

Well, Visceral went from Melbourne/Los Angeles/Redwood Shores/Montreal/Shanghai to Redwood Shores/Shanghai already, so I'm not sure how much more reduction they intend to do.

I think they might be working on EA's new alternating shooter franchise at the RWS studio, and Shanghai doesn't really make sense for layoffs.

PopCap is making an FPS? Seriously? Why am I just hearing this. I don't even know what to think about that.

THE GEIS TWEET IS UNRELATED AND OLD.

But yeah, this is terrible news for everyone involved. I can't imagine what they must be going through right now.

I stated it numerous times, over and over, the industry was stuck in a bubble and now it's bursting, and the major contraction is coming (I.E. crash). I won't even go into the details of why I believe it, but unlike bubbles of other industries, the video game bubbles was one the companies burst on their own.

Jesse Cox says 2000 people laid off...

https://twitter.com/JesseCox

"This just in: EA set to lay off 2,000 employees?!"

"EA laying off 2000 people - my source? I am the source :p Expect the news to hit the net soon."

"Notices were given this morning."

"Here ya go: Press Release http://www.ea.com/news/ea-organizational-update …
no numbers included, but trust me, 2000 lay offs is accurate"

Make of it what you will

2000? Holy shit that´s a huge number. That´s awful, hopefully all the effected get job asap.

It´s a 1000 people apparently. Still a huge number and it´s awful.
