Gameindustry.biz article on Wii U: Death by SunhiLegend (post 346)

This " People just pick on Nintendo" mentality is fucking ridiculous

It's not a mentality it's a fact. The industry saw the amazing news coming from Nintendo Direct today (new Sonic the Hedgehog game) and realised the Wii U was on its way to a resurgence the likes of which the industry has never seen. So they released this editorial through the Gameindustry arm of their anti-Nintendo empire to ensure Wii U will never recovers.

I mean that's just obvious.

Because it's a Nintendo exclusive now, so it makes sense to hate it.

You are 100% correct - I remember the thread we had yesterday about Sonic being right on par with the likes of Mario!

Unlike Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony won't allow that to happen.

They won't flop. but nothing's going to change the current market conditions. It's a reason company folks are praying MS and Sony can "save their industry" and showing guarded optimism, but fans on forums are proclaiming they will kick ass and take names. Enthusiastic fans of course want this to happen and even make up/discount current available data to make sure their point sticks.

Eeeeeeehhhhh I never said people only picked on Nintendo.

Not having reading comprehension is fucking ridiculous.

Yeah, everyone talks about how mediocre Colors and Generations were, right?

Yes but at that time Wii U will have its fair share of awesome games, and I don't what the hilarity will be about anymore.

Depends on if PS4/720 take off like rockets or not. This Holiday will be a major bellwether for the industry in general, not just Nintendo.

Nintendo is certainly fighting a tide though. This press coverage and sales has been horrific, although this article comes off more like the ranting of a fanboy on a bender than any kind of real journalistic effort.

They'll start slow but attract audiences willing to purchase games. That's the difference. I imagine 720 and PS4 will struggle to get much above 100k a month for lots of 2014 but their software sales will not be as atrocious as Wii U.

I know for a fact that some major North American retailers already discontinued Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate for the Wii U. I haven't seen blow-out prices on it yet, but when the launch copies are gone, they will not be ordering restock. It might become a collector's item.

I feel there's a 50/50 chance between a 3DS-type-phoenix-from-the-ashes resurgence, and a console that's effectively dead in 3 years.

Either way, Nintendo will probably survive this, and I don't regret my purchase. But too bad for WiiU owners that like EA games, I guess.

I agree it is 50/50. Sonic isn't a huge deal but it is still a million seller and more games is good news. Exclusive games even if they may be niche is very good news. The more exclusives and deals Nintendo can keep and pick up the better their chances to get sales up to good numbers.

Yeah you are right.

Just look at Sony doing EVERYTHING to save the Vita!

Because the Vita to Sony really matters as much as the Wii-U to Nintendo? Let's get real here, the console and handheld markets are completely different, comparisons between handhelds and consoles are pointless.

Edit: And of course the Vita is all but dead, but why beat a dead horse?

So Nintendo going third party would be good or bad for the industry?

I personally feel like it would be bad. I hope they can turn things around.

The media isn't "picking on Nintendo" because of some inscrutable bias, but it does feel at times like they're almost scolding the company whenever it actually does try to promote the Wii U and give it games as if it's some kind of pointless endeavor.

thank god Nintendo is getting their asses kicked. I want them to embrace the new HD generation. Its time we got a console from Nintendo that can be compared to the stats of the PS4. Bring it nintendo or die slowly

Well you should read back what you said, expect that from a ten year old

Good for me. Irrelevant to the industry. The industry has passed Nintendo. They contribute nothing to the future direction.

Come on WiiU!!!!!

Nintendo did A TON of errors, both with the Wii U and other plattforms, and its fair to criticize them point that out, but there is a long way from there to the total ignorance and hatred behind this and a lot of other "editorials" about Nintendo. And today even Sega got to join in on the fun :)

I think its mostly out of frustration. No one wants nintendo to fail although it outwardly appears that Nintendo is trying its best to do just that.

Nintendo's alienation of me has been a long process starting with their insistence to stick with cartridges when the rest of the industry was moving to CD's(which also coincidently started their third party animosity towards them) and its been a slow downward death from then on.

As someone whose two favorite game publishers/developers were Nintendo and Sega for a loooooong time, using the latter as a reference, it'd be horrific for Nintendo. I mean, you'd probably see Mario/Zelda/Pokemon forever and ever, but anything else? Those games would cease to exist the moment the news hit the internet in my mind.

Love my Wii U and excited for games coming later in the year, but I also can't disagree with much in the article. People who loves Nintendo might not like what the guy is saying, but I could understand potential consumers feeling this way about the Wii U.

Ah ah, this journalist has to discuss with Yves Guillemot about the "sales power" of Sonic. I mean, Sonic is in the top 20 franchises of this past generation on consoles according to Ubi. This is not a "little" seller.

Who talked about "facts" here ?

And the 'industry writers' come out to spit vinegar after another Nintendo Direct.

Not getting Nintendo sponsored catered dinners and vacation weekends makes things real clear.

No wonder Nintendo is speaking directly to the consumer.

I hope the writers talking big game on how PS4 and next box are going to breathe new life into this industry are right otherwise they will be eating serious humble pie in a year.

What I find most amazing is that after 2 E3's of the majority of GAF and analysts saying the same thing, Nintendo still moved ahead.

What's the appeal of the GamePad? What's the killer app?
The GamePad is going to add a lot of cost.
If this is $300, how is it going to compete with the similarly-powered XBox360 and PS3?
If it's low in power, why will third-parties commit to it? Especially once the new consoles are out?
The late ports do not mean anything and will not move units.
People are getting tired of NSMB. It won't move units.
Nintendo Land is way more complicated than Wii Sports and not as intuitive.
Who's the target market here?
Why is this using the same brand as the Wii? The Wii has been dead for two years!
When are the games coming?

I've noticed this, too, for another reason. Maybe Nintendo get scolded because most people in the media are still affectionate toward the company, as if it were their child. Sony and Microsoft are mainly met with acknowledgement, contempt or scorn, depending on the situation, as if they were mere acquaintances.

That's factually untrue and you know it.

The industry can't help but violently contract if the WiiU dies on the vine and the other two systems don't come out of the gate much stronger then their predecessors, like Ps2 level strong.

Well, you should learn to read, I expect a ten years old to read better than you.

I was talking about the fact that is an exclusive.
The only people that like exclusives are the ones that own the console it will be exclusive for.

I am a Wii and Wii U owner, but I see no lies in this article.
All Nintendo has promised for E3 is more Mario/Smash Bros/Zelda - nothing to capture the interest outside of the already converted.
Publisher disinterest such as with EA reflects consumer disinterest - there is no confidence in the product anymore.
The only thing Nintendo can do is moneyhat a load of third party support, to remove the barrier of ambivalence from those parties, and hope to god their first party offerings captures the Wii audience again. Very tough battle ahead - and this ignores the huge ass elephant in the room that is the PS4/720.

Is there any possibility WiiU won't be Nintendos Dreamcast?

Some people here are hilarious. Like the WiiU is going to magically go off at one point..... It will have GameCube numbers at best.

What is Nintendo contributing? In what way will 720 and PS4 be influenced by anything Nintendo has done since Wii? What is Nintendo's contribution to society?

Nintendo still exists after the Gamecube happened, don't they?

See this is what I mean. It doesn't matter if it was or wasn't. Reality is it was released today. So again, the reasons don't matter when reality is right there. to me it's just some guy writing a ranty article after a Direct about everything BUT the direct, with the exception of a diss to Sonic lol.
