Freedom Wars (Panopticon) - Vita, 2014, "Recovery" Multiplayer Action

It's total overkill, though. As if Sony's blindly throwing darts hoping one of them will stick. But none will, because the real thing is on someone else's dartboard.

So many high-profile games of the same genre (PSO2, SS, Toukiden, GE2, now this) will produce some incredible fatigue, especially considering that these developers make these games with hundreds of hours of gameplay grind in mind. Why not give us a decent JRPG instead?

Gameplay Grind?

It uses Yahoo Maps for multiplayer stuff.

The image that keeps getting posted says "Attack one another, save one another"

Some of the locked 5/30 blocks are somewhat translucent. There's one that talks about over 1,000,000 wanted criminals. Another block says Surveillance. The one next to it says Abudctor. Another says Volunteer.

This is definitely more than just a Hunting game. Nationwide GPS powered multiplayer war?

Interesting idea. Something's up that's for sure.

It looks a lot like Gravity Rush's style to me tbh.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
We'll probably find out more tomorrow when Famitsu leaks. Hopefully there's a developer interview or something.

I have a bad feeling it might be imageepoch. The style looks kinda like BRS PSP but maybe that's just me.

Glad it is a Vita exclusive (?) game.

I cannot say I love the genre but I will most likely give it a shot nonetheless. I do appreciate the art style and usage of colour however.

I mentioned before this was more like PSO. But the Monster Hunter meme is too strong. I actually knew the title strangely enough. I am excited. PSO2 and Freedom Wars in the West please.

Can someone translate these? What does it say?

The "criminals" in this world are those who have committed the crime of simply being alive. Sounds like population control to me. These criminals are then forced into manual labor to reduce their own sentences - they're turned into "volunteers" for the battlefield, where they have to help to capture citizens who are presumably trying to escape. By doing so they hope to gain their own freedom.

Looking through the site, it sounds like the game designed entirely to be a semi-massive multiplayer action game. Everyone plays as a criminal, and there is a support partner who does surveillance for you. Then you form into teams to complete objectives which aims to decrease your sentence, but some of these might involve fighting other teams who are working against you.

Oh and I must say, I think that Panopticon was an infinitely more interesting name for the game.

It is also a remarkably fun word to say aloud. A shame that they appear to have changed it.

Ill play monster hunter 4, Such a shame. Trailer is great, Looks awesome but I am dedicated to monster hunter now, After learning ultimate 3

The whole thing sounds pretty ambitious. PSO2 has had quite a bit of success on the Vita despite being an always online game. I can see this working.

That sounds pretty unique.

Sounds intriguing - and nothing like Monster Hunter.

Panopticon could be the western name.

Well I certainly hope so.

Panopitcon is the name of the prison.

That does indeed make sense for rather obvious reasons however I can't help but feel that it would still make for a far more interesting title for the overall product. Of course in the overall scheme of things the importance of the name pales in comparison to the importance of releasing original and exclusive games on the platform. So I am happy either way really.

Disappointed :(
I expected some gameplay footage, not a slightly modified version of an already released trailer

It mentions yahoo at the bottom right too.
This screen makes me hope it's not a simple monster hunter clone.
It looks great, i hope i can enjoy it, it's a real shame i can't enjoy a game like soul sacrifice where i love everything except the genre, and i'm sure i'm not the only one.

Scej please no more monster hunter clones, no matter how great a game is, people only want monster hunter, even if looks bad(and people will say it looks great!), if you want to give real value to vita give us(and for "us" i mean us and eu people) more jrpgs and other genres that made japan great, japan did not become great thanks to monster hunter games(or moe games imo).

If they want to appeal to the west, they need FPS, sports and action adventures. Fuck JRPGs, there's a ton of 'em playable on the Vita already.

Maybe in japan :( in the west we have atelier, persona, ys(but only in the usa  ) and ffx/x-2, in japan there is trails in the sky and flash, 2 tales of and probably more.
I don't even count great games of other genres confined in japan :(

Japan did not become great trying to appeal to the west imo(infact "westernized" japanese games are just bad or not as good as the others).

Yeah, but lets be honest, if Trails in the Sky sold a million copies in the US we'd be seeing the rest of the series (and a lot more JRPGs). It didn't.

Still, I'd like to see something of an open world RPG. Those seem reasonably popular in Japan and are big in the West.

It looks okay, but I'm still worried about the genre. I don't think I can handle very many more hunting action games.

Panopticism right here. The watched doing the watching.

Concept with the rl maps sounds cool.

Huh, neat! I'm not big on MH games but this one has an intriguing world and I enjoy the setting more. It's nice that it's dark and has conspiracy stuff in it. I thought it might have been a typical RPG based on the trailer, music and characters, but this will do. Especially if they can make it a great game and still focus on the story. It seems like it's the real deal just like Soul Sacrifice.

Vita love me long time!

Keep em coming west!
This looks great

OT;A 12-15yo I'm guessing would love a game like ys celceta? Or am I way off? Like parents randomly buying them a vita game ys in this example. Story, action, anime = yes?

The whole maps and location data thing makes me wonder if the game will have exclusive features for 3G vitas only. Which would suck, since I don't have a 3G Vita :(

Edit: Okay seems like there will be some GPS and NEAR functionality according to 4Gamer and google translate. Up to 8 players multiplayer. Online and ad-hoc supported.

No way, wouldn't worry about that. Some parts might require an internet connection though :S

Edited my post. 4 gamer mentions the use of GPS and NEAR. Of course wi-fi only vitas would still be able to play the game :)

I haven't seen the teaser trailer before, so I was rather excited when I started to watch the trailer a few moments ago. The setting is really interesting, the designs are pretty good too and I really love it that Sony isn't shy of trying to establish new IPs.

And then my excitement was a little ruined when the group faced a giant monster at the end of trailer. So, another multiplayer "MH style" game of slashing overly huge monsters? Hoped for something else, honestly.

Looking at the screenshots now, it's clear that it's not just a MH clone, but it doesn't really change the fact that I feel tired by this style of multiplayer game that Japan currenty loves so much (I'm honestly worried that Monolith's X will also be similar). The GPS thing is really cool, and I'm sure that if utilzed correctly it makes for a pretty interesting experience, but it's probably once again that kind of thing that just doesn't work outside of Japan / densly populated areas.

Oh well. I'll keep my eyes on it.

Good for you? Not understanding why you felt you needed to tell us that.

Didn't feel like a troll to me. This kind of game actually requires so much commitment that after a while is difficult to quit.
I can see that with Ragnarock Odyssey: after investing so much time into it, even though I have Soul Sacrifice, which is 100 times better, I can't put it down. and I find it pretty poor ^^'

BTW: loving almost everything so far, from the MGS-like score to the design, from the theme to the unique touches that seem to pop up in some screens (geo-localization? MMORPG-like?).

It's not really any more or less useful than posts telling us how great it looks. Not sure why more negative posts need to measure up to a higher standard than positive ones. I'm not saying it was a good post, mind you, but not much worse than posts simply saying "Looks good", "Looks bad" or "hurrdurr, I don't care for your post." All of them are equally useless in the scheme of things.

It's also worth to keep in mind there are always different ways to look at games. You can simply look at it from a perspective that is solely fixed on a game's quality and gameplay. But you can also look at it from more of a business/sales focused point of view. His post actually expresses a sentiment that's interesting for a sales discussion: Even though this game, similarly to Soul Sacrifice, tries to do its own thing, many potential costumers still won't pay it the attention it (might) deserves, simply because they are too invested in a game that's not the same but similar enough for a lot of people not to bother with another one of its kind.

The same can be said for the people who play hundreds of hours of CoD multiplayer every year, who just stopped paying attention to other games of the shooter genre. These games might play completely different, but those people "already have CoD".

^ True, if MH was on Vita.

It doesn't really matter. It's a stretch to think that Vita owners aren't also interested in Monster Hunter or don't own other plattforms apart of the Vita. Especially in Japan, where the Vita is regarded as a hardcore platform, while the 3DS is the kind of thing "everyone" owns. The overlap is probably substantial.

Edit: But that's probably all I'm going to say to that matter, I don't really want to derail this topic with a discussion about the demographics of the Vita and the 3DS.

^ It's possible they own both, no doubt, especially in Japan you're right. Sony's doing its best to take back those customers. I can see for people not yet into the series, this game would seem a lot more appealing based on the graphics and story type they're going with. I think it might have a better chance than SS.

Wow interesting :S Shouldn't be compulsary to progress I woudln't think though, makes very little sense especially with the 3G version not being that popular in Japan anyway.
