Media Create Sales: Week 21, 2013 (May 20 - May 26)

Vita has a definite chance to revive itself.

Wii U, with each passing week is losing any chance of reviving itself. I think people are waiting for Nintendo to pull a 3DS (combo of game onslaught + price drop) before buying.
Joke post?

Nintendo hasn't released their major games yet. Unless Sony can secure Monster Hunter 5 as an exclusive, the Vita is done.

Wants the largest console games publisher to avoid Nintendo's platforms.
Yes, but setting aside the moribund and essentially DOA 360 for a moment.

The question then becomes - why is the Wii U, as a new system, only managing an attach rate of 0.9% to the aged installed base of the PS3 (1.1%).

Is it concurrent ownership of the 3DS? I imagine a lot of people with PS3s in Japan also own 3DSs.
Sorry, I was referring to the average attach rate. The individual attach rate for any given title could vary based on what-has-you factors - franchise/genre demographics, pros and cos of the different SKUs, etc. If you're seeking for a generalized statement though, clearly ps3 is still in full swing in Japan, whereas WiiU is in the process of proving itself as a viable platform. Still, it'd be curious to see a case where the SKUs are skewed more toward the traditional nintendo demographics - say, a hypothetical Sonic multi-SKU could paint the opposite picture to what RE:R portrays.

Exactly. Wii U has much more chances, because Nintendo games.

On the other side, Vita has....nothing. Where is Vita versions of Monster Hunter, Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Metal Gear Solid...?

With an amazing stacked lineup like this I'm sure Vita will be back to 15k in no time

05/30 Japan Haiyore! Nyaruko-San: Nafushigatai Game no You na Mono
NextRev: Hisho Kentei Shiken
Suugaku Rikiou: Chuukyuu Naka-2-Level
Suugaku Rikiou: Joukyuu Naka-3-Level
Suugaku Rikiou: Shokyuu Naka-1-Level
06/06 Japan Ratchet & Clank: Ginga Sentai QForce
06/20 Japan FIFA 13: World Class Soccer (EA Best Hits)
Kami Jigen Idol Neptune PP
Winning Post 7 2013
06/27 Japan Memories Off 6 Complete
Memories Off: Yubikiri no Kioku
NextRev: Care Manager Shiken
Sangoku Hime 2: Tenka Hatou - Saki no Keishousha
Toukiden
07/25 Japan Dragon's Crown
NextRev: Care Manager Eiken
XBLAZE Code: Embryo

But hey at least its not this:
06/06 Japan Rabbids Land
06/19 Japan New Super Luigi U
06/27 Japan F1 Race Stars: Powered Up Edition
Injustice: Kamigami no Gekitotsu
07/13 Japan New Super Luigi U
Pikmin 3
07/18 Japan Sniper Elite V2
07/25 Japan LEGO City Undercover
08/08 Japan Ryu ga Gotoku 1&2 HD for Wii U
08/24 Japan The Wonderful 101

Even though Pikmin 3 will likely outsell everything on the Vita list. Nintendo was at least smart enough to release NSLU at retail I gues.

What are you talking about? Vita has almost every PS4 game coming to its platform :p.

Pretty hilarious(sad?) that WiiU sell less even with Revelations hitting. Too bad 360 version sold even less lol.

That it's even comparable is mystifying.

Precisely how. it had a 50k price cut and it's at 10k a week in sales. Sony predicts less than 5million for the next fiscal year. Outside of a miracle game, I'd probably say it's dead Jim. Unless support magically explodes there's nothing on the horizon that can push it anymore. You'll get the occasional bump due to games but it's really just fading into obscurity right now,

Wii u still has it's trial fire check list before I can consider it the same though it's definitely heading there without a major change in course.

Vita will be two years old at the end of the year. It shouldn't take over 2, less than 3 years to revive a dead handheld console. That is madness, nothing will revive Vita. Maybe if it got all heavy hitters exclusively on vita but no.

God damn I am sure a Vita version would have sold better. Whats stopping the WiiU from slowly descending. Surely it would have stabilised right now, as correct me if I am wrong, wasn't the PSV's lowest sales due to it being the weeks leading up to a price cut. So with no price cut in sight or games can this reach even lower lows?

Nope, it was just a really bad week. The weeks before the price cut weren't that bad. You're thinking of the 3DS.
Looking at the Wii U sales I won't be surprised if it goes below 3k, it hasn't stabilised yet and it's still free falling.

Japan is a highly portable country now, plus I imagine Sony will introduce new models as they did with the PSP. Software is at least being made for the Vita. I can't say the same for Wii U outside of Sonic and old ports.

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
Even with a game release WiiU continues to slide. How long of a "this console is dead" narrative does it take to permanently seal the fate of such a box? I'd say we're at it currently.

People will be on the fucking edge of their seats to see just how much 3D Mario boosts sales in... October? November?

With SMT finally released, maybe Atlus can deliver the Persona 5 news theyve been cradling for FIVE GODDAM YEARS.

So New Super Mario Bros. U isn't a major game?

Nintendoland was also never intended to be a major game either despite them creating the various games around the system's USP's! No sir.

Wait, the system that is nearly twice as old has a better chance of reviving itself than the one that just came out and has an awesome line-up of stuff coming soon while the other one has ...?

Wow, amazing numbers for SMT4. Very impressed.

Awesome lineup? For the Wii U?

No, mate.

Vita hasn't had any big games released on it yet either. WiiU is looking more favourable for a recovery due to is future game line up.

Yet? You're making the assumption that big titles are coming to Vita and Sony or other first parties are, I don't know, hiding them.

Wii U has already got 3-4 games announced which will outsell anything in Vita's past or forseeable future.
So New Super Mario Bros. U and Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate aren't major games?

Mon Hun is a HD port. I don't think anyone was (sensibly) predicting that it would set the world on fire.

NSMBU has a roughly two-thirds attach rate. It's a big title to own for the system, but it's plain that it isn't a title to propel system sales.

Total - 700.381

This week Dragon's Dogma crossed 700.000 units. It seems that selling a million copies wasn't as doable as Hideaki Itsuno thought, but nonetheless really great sales figures.

Soul Sacrifice, Persona 4 Golden, and Project Diva f aren't big games? Tearaway isn't going to do jack all in Japan, sorry.

No, not at all.

Amazing and well deserved. Hopefully Deep Down (if it is Dragons Dogma 2) can cross the million mark. Its great to see new IP's do well.

Exactly.

Historically NSMB sells better in Japan than 3D Mario. I see little reason to think it will move units in Japan that NSMBU could not.

I have a sneaky suspicion that the Mario Kart well is going to dry up soon, though that's nothing more than a pessimistic gut feeling. I have no basis for that.

I can't get over what a failure the Wii U is.. everywhere. The 3DS didn't get this bad, did it? I feel like it bottomed out at like 6-7k..

Nintendo needs E3 to be here tomorrow. Fuck waiting, they should move up their announcements.

I've made this point before, but it isn't NSMB U versus 3D Mario- its NSMB U versus (potentially) 3D Mario, Mario Kart, Wind Waker, and possibly other first party games all hitting pretty close to one another.

Well, MK7 sold much less than MKDS and MKWii...

edit: whoops, and I even had the graphs here. nvm

People are putting far, far too much emphasis on Revelaitons HD. It's a HD port of a game which didn't do all that well on Nintendo's actually popular hardware. Why on earth would anyone look at it as a significant factor?

Don't get me wrong, I've long since lost faith in Nintendo to bring Wii U to real market relevance, but if Nintendo are in fact preparing an onslaught of titles in the latter half of the year, it's best to wait until then rather than with the absolutely nothing of relevance since launch.

Well, MK7 sold much less than MKDS and MKWii...

Wii, sure. DS, no. Launch aligned, as recently as one or two months ago, MK7 was ahead.

People really neglect Mario Legs.

For the record regarding the Wii U's upcoming line up, I think W101 and Bayo2 will only provide minor blips to sales, and stuff like SMT x FE will be like Tales of Vesperia 360; a temporary boost that will not have lasting impact. Same with X.

3DS' low prior to the announcement of the price cut was a bit below 20K. It did 16K in the week that included the announcement of the price cut, and ~6K in the week in between the price cut being announced and its going into effect.

I agree- you are discussing more of the niche stuff though to be honest.

...Seriously?

Way to not include the actual big sellers coming. Platinum games won't sell, stop the presses.

So does anyone see RE:R HD outselling RE:R in the end?

3DS version sales according to Garaph and the last date it was updated.

Code:
Resident Evil: Revelations 283,235 2012-12-24

To be fair, MHTriG sold a lot of copies on the 3DS, I'm guessing that's why many people skipped on the WiiU version

True, the appeal of MH is local multiplayer for Japan.

So what exactly determines whether a game is big or not?

A combination of historical sales data for previous versions on the series, publisher expectations and also retailers, marketing push.

Persona is the biggest of the 3 games indeed, but how do we consider the Persona series compared to other rpg series (SMT, Tales, FF, DQ, Pokemon)?

Was Sony expecting SS to be a million seller, to reach 500k? If so, then indeed it was intended to be a big game that just fell flat on its face.

Regarding Resi Rev, I think it's not surprising that it wasn't too successful on Wii U. How many Resident Evil Fans have a Wii U but no 3DS? Probably not too many. Also, as a Resident Evil fan in Japan you have to have a PS3 (Resi 5, Resi 6), so I would not have thought that it's a system seller at all for Wii U. Still, sales are bad and Wii U's system sales are horrible.

I guess Nintendo is glad they get to add RE to the list of games available. But, if they had somehow gotten it exclusive, it would per force have sold systems, with such a fanbase not having the system already.

I always think there must be some strong incentives provided for SQEX to move Kingdom Hearts around so much; almost every time you get a chance to play a new episode you need to buy a new system. They be passing out KH episodes like condoms at a school.

I could be wrong, and if so someone please correct, but typically attach rates on newer systems tend to be higher and attach rates tend to decrease as system installed bases increase beyond a certain point.

So the relative sales of the PS3 and Wii U are more interesting really; the former has a higher attach rate for the title.

I think recent system sales matter too, not just LTD. People who bought a system recently are responsible for much of the software sales.

Yeah, you're right. I just saw the numbers and didn't think about the legs MKDS and MKWii had. Currently it's tracking below MKWii but who knows, might overtake it like the MKDS did.

I don't think RE:R Unveiled Edition will beat RE:R Vanilla. It will probably crawl up to 200k and probably that's about it.
