Media Create Sales: Week 21, 2013 (May 20 - May 26)

I know, but what else would you add for a new IP? I think expectations and marketing would be the biggest points of reference, maybe for the first part instead of being part of an existing series, being part of a popular genre, sort of like what happened with God Eater during the PSP, but not quite right now with SS.

Definitely agree with this.

I added SMT there to also show a lower selling series, I could have included Etrian Odyssey, Atelier, Neptunia and it would just show Persona in the middle, but very far from the big hitters.

Also FF currently is no where as big as DQ or Pokemon, when these 2 sell twice or more than FF, are they still in the same category? Huge and super huge? What about Tales then, it is bigger than Persona, but if Persona is big, then Tales is super big?

I'm just trying to say that using the term big deliberately while changing the goal posts just seems foolish.

you're right that Pokemon > DQ > FF > Tales and etc. but wouldn't you just say exactly that? Pokemon is bigger than DQ, FF, and etc. Because Pokemon is bigger, does that make DQ no longer big? Since FF is bigger than Tales, does that mean Tales is not a big? Relative to FF sure, but based on marketing push, expectations, and etc. it is a big series.

The Tales of Innocence R has been outsold by Persona 4: Golden, what does that mean? Tales series is definitely bigger than the Persona series, but that doesn't mean it is a big game for the Vita compared to Persona.

I just don't agree with the idea of making thresholds for series as what exactly determines what is big or not. I'm not exactly sure what I think determines whether a game big or not, but I feel it is relative to how important a game is to a platform.

I agree that expecting a game to sell to 66% of the install base is crazy, but you are forgetting what I think was Sony's intention with SS, for the game to become a system seller, not just a game for the established install base. They wanted the game to keep selling considerably well on a weekly basis while moving systems, but it has failed to do that.

You're right, Sony's intention with SS was to become a system seller. It did sell quite a number of systems in the short run. I still would say Soul Sacrifice is a big/major game for the Vita that failed.

You aren't really giving me any evidence in that post. Ok, Japan is a portable country, but what evidence is there besides the PS4 integration that makes you think Sony has any more cards to play?

Mainly Square-Enix. I see FFX and X-2 doing well, and I can see more FF Vita games happening in the future.

Only 6 more weeks of diminishing Wii U sales until Pikmin 3 is released!

Mpl90

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
You know what's a bit shocking? The new Shin Megami Tensei in a long time not being that distant from the last main KH chapter, debut wise :lol

Mon Hun is a HD port. I don't think anyone was (sensibly) predicting that it would set the world on fire.

It's easy to say that now, but back when it, and DQX, were announced, people pretty much expected total domination. It was also a much better HD port than the HD MH port the PS3 got.

According to Garaph:
Code:
Pikmin 502,996
Pikmin 2 470,933

What were the numbers for Wario games?

I've made this point before, but it isn't NSMB U versus 3D Mario- its NSMB U versus (potentially) 3D Mario, Mario Kart, Wind Waker, and possibly other first party games all hitting pretty close to one another.

I might be wrong, but I think Zelda WW HD is gonna disappoint folks.

The best, and best selling, Zelda of all time is OOT. It sold 1.1 mil on N64 and 500k on the 3DS. WW sold 740K on GC and if ratios remain similar, WW HD will sell 336K on WiiU, but the WiiU is no 3DS.

Wii, sure. DS, no. Launch aligned, as recently as one or two months ago, MK7 was ahead.

People really neglect Mario Legs.

I am interested in seeing such charts (MK and NSMB) comparing Wii, WiiU, 3DS, DS sales of each, if some kind soul can provide them.

The Wii U is in trouble right now but not sure how anyone can say the Vita has a chance to revivie itself but the Wii u doesnt?

Not really sure how anyone can come to that conclusion right now!!

At the recent retailer's meeting Sony already stated SS has gone way beyond their expectations..
I'm not sure whether they really meant it or not, but I guess they really didn't fund that game much I can understand they're happy with the number.

There haven't been any steady flow of 3rd party so far and in the foreseeable future, why will they come for no reason now?

I guess this would depend on the definition of steady...and yeah, in hindsight, the introduction of new platforms may chop the waters a bit. I'll still stand by my assertion that the Vita won't necessarily be for lack of software, because some devs have found unexpected success on the platform.

Oh, that's interesting. I thought they would have preferred much bigger legs. It did sell well though.

Vita's been meeting Sony's expectations for a while now (of course not in projected sales). Sony's expectations are crap. Though it probably made a healthy profit, just likely not much in the grand scale of things.

If wish Sony had the balls earlier on to say yes it is a flop and this what we're going to do about. May have managed to make something of turn around rather than pretty much ditch the system.

Yet? You're making the assumption that big titles are coming to Vita and Sony or other first parties are, I don't know, hiding them.

Wii U has already got 3-4 games announced which will outsell anything in Vita's past or forseeable future.

Mon Hun is a HD port. I don't think anyone was (sensibly) predicting that it would set the world on fire.

NSMBU has a roughly two-thirds attach rate. It's a big title to own for the system, but it's plain that it isn't a title to propel system sales.

Well, I just want to point out that, yes it's likely, there are unannounced games underdevelopment. For example, Panopticon or "Freedom wars" just recently got announced but it was hidden for quite time since development was 69 percent complete.

More likely for SE to completely ditch handheld systems and go iOS only for portable games.

Kaku-San-Sei Million Arthur shows SE knows how to bring functional mobile ports to Vita at least. This title in particular is far less offensive than say... FF Airborne Brigade.

I'm surprised they haven't tried to get some of their arcade titles on consoles or handhelds.
Lord of Vermillion or Gunslinger Stratos seem like they'd be fun to play on the go.

Oh, that's interesting. I thought they would have preferred much bigger legs. It did sell well though.

Realistically, a game done by rather b-tier dev, have gruesome setting and on an extremely niche platform selling 200K and beyond is quite good, even though it's one of the most popular gerne in Japan. Inafune later admitted that the whole concept of the game was turned down by Sony countless times, until it finally got approved.
One of the reasons for SS being received (rather) well in Japan is that it was regarded as a surprise, that Marvelous AQL - Inafune combination could actually make a decent game.

I think the moment Nintendo decided to do price drop for 3DS despite of going red was the timing Sony decided not to put too much resource in handheld area (yes it is before the Vita release).
Sony may have dared to compete head-to-head with 3DS if PS4 is not around the corner IMO, but who knows :(

Some of the console numbers are up from last week which was expected. SMTIV did good out the gate, Valhalla Nights (presumably) was responsible for the slight PSV bump and Revelations didn’t do jack for Wii U. Nothing super surprising this week other than the Wii U going down again.

As far as Soul Sacrifice, it did good for what it was set out to do. I'm" not going to say if Sony thought it would be a system seller because I don't think I've ever heard them outright say it and I'm" not going to make assumptions or implications on that front. However, looking at what sells in Japan and then looking at Soul Sacrifice you pretty much knew that SS wasn't going to move vast amounts of hardware, not bad enough that it was new IP to begin with.

Sad but true.

I can't help but wonder: how much will the Wii U will rise above the Vita's SS numbers?

Even if Pikmin 3 ends up being incredible, what is the best case scenario? I mean Mario Galaxy only sold ~900k, right?

Glad to see SMT4 rocking on the 3DS.

I know the Wii U will get some really nice titles but damn, it's going to be painful too see its performance over the next few weeks.

Also, Marvelous stated they already shipped/sold 65,000 copies of VK3 including download sales. This is very interesting, since (while might not be the case for every Vita release of course) it would mean Vita digital sft sales are quite significant (almost 40% in this particular case).

Link: http://www.siliconera.com/2013/05/27/marvelous-aql-move-65000-copies-of-valhalla-knights-3/

Anyway, glad to see Vita going slightly up (although I was hoping for 13K+). Perhaps VK3 could even reach 100K LTD including digital. Although it will be hard to know unless Marvelous tells us.

About Persona 5, I think it could be Vita or PS4. Hope we know soon enough.

Just watch P5 be released on the
PS2

I'd buy it *shrug*

Good sales for SMT. Not quite the 200k number that was thrown around but obviously still good.

I wish Atlus would announce P5 already so the platform debate can stop. But let's get real. It's going to be a PS3 game, maybe with a 360 version or with a slight chance of it being on Vita instead. Vita version depends on if they think some extra JP sales would do better for them than "Western appeal" with a 360 version (PS3 version would have more appeal anyway). Of course they could be thinking to release a portable version down the road instead.

Catherine is on PS3 and 360.
P4A is on PS3 and 360.
Persona 5 will be on [...] and [...]

You can fill the gaps on your own.

EDIT:I am so tired of this debate.Yet I can't stop participating every single time... :p

Great number for SMT IV. Really above what I thought the game was going to do, and it definitely shows that mainline Shin Megami Tensei is still alive and well.

I find them interesting and comment from week to week in this har discussion forum. Just funny how shitty WiiU news always transmogrifies into hahaaa Vita soundbytes.

The reverse situation of course being that Capcom probably wishes it had made a Vita Revelaitons port rather than a WiiU one. Thats the sort of problem that isn't going to go away because tons of people pick up 3D Mario and Mario Kart and Mario Punchy Punch.
Both platforms are flopping hard, that's what begs the constant comparison. And yes, I think we're all fully aware Wii U's end of that is what draws you gleefully to these threads. That's partially why you so aggressively pulling the fanboy card is worth pointing out (on a poster whose commentary that isn't even that out there even really). Fight the good fight somewhere else.

Was that in doubt? Honest question, I never thought SMT IV could sell much less than Nocturne. It's not like Persona has vampirized it, if only it may help to get people interested into the main line. My only concern with it is that it looked quite cheap in the first images, but I think it has grown up on me, really looking for buying it.

I'm also tired of the Persona platform debate, I just hope Atlus announce it soon. I would really love a quality jump to Catherine type graphics but I'm confident it will be a quality game no matter the platform or the graphics, so just bring it on.

Interesting.

As good as the game looked it was still taking a risk with its setting and visual approach. Its also silly to think that just because you throw money into a game and its in a popular genre that it will do well. I'm sure Sony had realistic expectations.

SS didn't light the charts on fire but its a great start for a new IP that definitely has the potential to grow if handled properly.

This is the way I see it too. If Vita had launched at same time as 3DS it would have been a real brawl, and no one would have backed down. Instead, Nintendo must have been in a panic with a poorly selling platform about to face stiff competition. After Nintendo's move, Sony must have reevaluated and put Vita on a slow fuse. The Vita is the PS4 best buddy partly because it helped cause resources to be drained from Wii-U. (Or.. Sony is not so well-coordinated company and things just happen at random.)

Credit to Nintendo for making bold moves when 3DS needed it, instead of trying to figure out the minimum they could get away with, and then failing - it's almost like their stock options needed bold moves to get above water:

04./02. [3DS] Friend Collection: New Life # <ETC> (Nintendo) {2013.04.18} (¥4.800) - 59.876 / 984.984 (-5%)

Safe to say that this will be one of Nintendo's mainstay franchises for a long time. It'll be interesting to see what they do with this in the future.

Yes because no one predicted SMTIV to do this well here. In fact some of the earlier predictions were extremely low. Sub-Strange Journey numbers. Many of us also doubted it would cross 200k, so yeah these are good figures relative to the expectations here.

Aha, thanks. I consider myself an absolute disaster for predictions so I don't use to participate, I guess that it would have been fun doing it in this case (pretty easy to say after it happening! haha).

I'm really glad it did well, Megaten for life.

Good Lord at dat Wii-U! When does Pikmin 3 drop in Japan? Not a damn thing is changing till then and even still, the bump would be temporary. Also love the P5 platform speculation. I would be mad if it released on the 3DS and I own one, lol.
