MS marketing director: "We are going to kill Sony at E3!"

I'm not surprised about that, but I'm surprised they actually said it out loud

So what did you expect him to say.. oh gee golly I just don't know. We might have some good stuff, stop by if you have time....

It's his job to pimp the brand, are people seriously that dense?

I'm more surprised that they, internally, view Sony as the direct competition.

I'm actually very happy to hear that.

The Playstation brand wouldn't exist without the practice of buying up exclusives/studios. It shouldn't be frowned upon when MS uses the same tactics on Sony that Sony used to build themselves up.

Yes it should. Well buying a studio outright is fair play i guess, but offering cash to secure an exclusive should very much be frowned upon, as it adds nothing of value to the (potential) customer, it only detracts value from the competitions (potential) customers.

Frown away.

Erm, isn't it allowed to frown upon it regardless of who is doing it?

I mean, buying exclusivity is pretty much the worst way a company can spend its money from a gamer's perspective, is it not?

Sure; everyone is entitled to their own opinions; but it would be nice for the opinions to be internally consistent most of the time. I think the issue here is that perception is that no one has or had an issue with how Sony conducts it's 3rd party exclusive deals; but everyone can't stand the 'MS moneyhatting'. Certainly seems hypocritical to many folks.

Microsoft's not doing a great job of managing expectations, IMO. You want people to be *surprised* at how well you do, not expecting something big - in any sort of marketing, you want that gap between expectations and what you actually deliver to be a big positive number instead of a small one (or a negative one).

I feel like Microsoft's marketers are essentially wasting their chance at low expectations because they're trying to create positive buzz amid all the current negativity.

- Metal Gear is already announced as a PS4/One product
- Sony is co-developing on Final Fantasy products as I type. Plus, considering SE's financial woes, it would be suicide to grant exclusive rights to MS for anything less than 500M. They would make significantly more than that simply by developing, and releasing FF7 on both platforms.

Okay then i don't see them killing anybody. As i mentioned they have all those major series plus we know they're getting Destiny, Starcraft, ect. Does it cost a billion dollars to make the next Just Dance a kinect exclusive??

Buying up third party exclusives is fine, so long as they're great games and made from the ground up on that console to best make use of its hardware.

The bigger issue is with the anti consumer or pure green orientated stuff Microsoft is quite famous for. Charging people to play online, omitting hard drives in certain models that need them and charging crap tonnes for them, stupendous accessory prices, advertising slewn all over the UI, this new push for DRM and online policies, forced Kinect etc.

I mean, I look at Windows 8, Office, Surface, Windows Phone etc. And most of Microsoft's practises across the board, and simply do not see it as a company I'd ever trust having a monopoly over gaming. They'd surely screw customers over every single way they could. Which actually cannot (imo) be said for Nintendo or Sony, not nearly to the sane degree anyway.

Like I've said before though, if they abandon the DRM, used game and online policies, I'll jump in.

Yeah, moneyhatting timing, features, add-ons or functionality is anti-consumer. Purchasing a studio or title for exclusive production isn't, as it provides additional functionality (ie hardware specific game mechanics and design)

Too true; there is an art at underselling; and MS does not appear to be very good at it lately. They could lay off of the apparent hyperbole. Who knows though; maybe they will end up "killing" Sony (by buying their entertainment devision...lol!!!)

Yes, they all have done and still do that. It's the job of a platform holder to build up a unique library to differentiate, just as it is the job of the platform holder to strategically protect their library from competitors. You can't blame the corporation who offered a contract to a developer/publisher and leave the one making the game as well the one losing the game out.

Nintendo, of course had a monopoly on 3rd parties with the NES that was broken up.
This lasted well into and throughout the SNES days, actually. It's why Sega and NEC had to settle for so many home-programmed conversions of otherwise locked-up titles for most of their console lifespans.

It was Sony with the Playstation that really started the practice. If not just buying an exclusive, then buying the studio that produced the game. People forget that Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, and Wipeout all appeared on the Saturn. The first games anyway.
Right, Sony has a long and pretty brutal history with moneyhats, the first true and serious moneyhatter in the industry. They also gutted/headhunted big teams of the early-mid 90s to build up their internal staff of gamemakers and people with connections, like Park Place Productions, who basically made Madden big. They bought Psygnosis and others, too.

They continued to do it to the Dreamcast (with an EA assist) to push them out. Ironic that it's rumored that EA is siding with MS this round.
Right. Also, they had plenty of exclusives or timed ones, anyway, with Take-Two/Rockstar, with GTA series and others, Konami with Silent Hill/Suikoden/MGS, Square, Enix, Capcom, and much more. There was a strong collusion between Japanese developers and Japanese platforms, something that is much less alive today.

Right. It's hypocritical, for certain.

I think a bunch of Sega fans turned into Sony fans over the years.

More like Sony fans turned into Sega fans.

I remember you could put a knife to a Sony fan's throat and ask them "which is better, Tekken or Virtua Fighter?" They would say Tekken every time. Because that was the "Sony fighter"

I remember that Sony fan explosion at the announcement of Virtua Fighter coming to the Playstation. All of a sudden VF was teh awesome! Yakuza is another Sega series popluar on the Playstation.

A lot of Sega fans jumped to XBOX because of Jet Set Radio:Future, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Shenmue II and GUNVALKYRIE.

The OG XBOX really did feel like the spiritual successor to the Dreamcast at that time.

But that awesome Sega is pretty much gone. They used to drop awesome game after awesome game. Now I'd be happy with a decent game.

I think a bunch of Sega fans turned into Sony fans over the years.

I don't know about that. Maybe.

Sega Dreamcast fans hated the PS2. The super computing BS really made the Dreamcast seem insanely inferior when it was actually quite capable.

Soon after Sega was really on board with Xbox.

So not sure how we are back to Sony again. I guess everyone just hates Microsoft now.

Because they specifically said it was towards games development...

They also said 5 billion transistors, and 300 thousand servers, and that they are global leaders this generation. Ever realize that they can throw out whatever numbers they want to get people to slurp it up and buy their products?

I bet when the dust settles, both Microsoft and Sony will have a couple of notable third party exclusives at their presentations, with MS maybe having 1 or 2 more than Sony. Then both companies will have pretty decent 1st/2nd party showings as well. In the end, it will be about taste because both companies will show some very interesting games and line-ups IMO.

Microsoft is not "killing" anyone. Get over-hyped at your own risk

No no no.

Buying exclusive and/or time released content is fare game!
It's the developer that takes the risk on this. In short: Does the money hat cover any potential lost of income?

Make no mistake, I was pissed with the timed exclusives associated with Fallout/V. But, it didn't force me to purchase the game on the 360.
The DLC eventually came to the PS3; however, by that time I had already platinumed the game and moved on.
The lost was on MS and Bethesda.

All is fair in this. I'm looking forward to June 10th!

Given the similarities in hardware making a timed exclusive for either PS4 or Xbone is leaving a whole stack of money on the table; its not an easy sell.

Especially given MS historic inability to gain any traction whatsoever outside the English speaking world, something that given the Kinect-centricity of the new platform looks more likely to continue than not.

MS strategy is largely predicated on Kinect giving them a key advantage, which is fine if you believe that... unfortunately a lot of countries are yet to be convinced.

I remembered when Microsoft said FFXIII will sell more on the Xbox 360.

I had a good laugh with that.

Google translate shows "Let's kill Sony at E3" for me. "Let's" isn't the same as "We'll".

Surely some Spanish speakers here can confirm how the sentence comes across in their language?

Also worth noting that it's been translated twice - from English to Spanish, and back to English. It likely sounds more arrogant than it is due to the context and tone getting lost in translation.

Read the article in spanish earlier, it translates " we will kill Sony at E3 "

Kind of funny that this is a complete role reversal for this two companies

To be honest, it probably didn't take much back in the day to get a 3rd party exclusive because the PlayStation was pretty much the only console in town. Nintendo zagged off with Nintendo 64 and decided to stick with cartridges (which pissed 3rd parties off). Sega completely botched the release of the Saturn which pissed off retailers and 3rd parties. And by the time the Dreamcast was rolling around most had already lost faith in Sega. PS2 got a lot of 3rd party exclusives by default with little to no money needed in exchange.

I think the rumoured League of Legends as an Xbox One exclusive could be a big score for Microsoft given the games popularity (I don't know anything about the game).

This probably bothers many here on neogaf but I think the industry is healthiest when they go for each others throats. Hope you can deliver ms. You need to.

Man, E3 is going to be fun this year ! My popcorn is ready !!!

Now that arrogance is going to bite them in the ass by everyone, gamers and media, if they don't deliver. I have a feeling they're gonna have some sort of exclusivity with the Metal Gear Franchise... Kojima appearing on their promo video was a surprise.

Hmmm, as a marketing major I don't remember the teacher recommending insulting or threatening the competition as a good tactic, especially when your product is receiving negative press. Go Sony. Go Nintendo. Xbox Go Home

How did the timed exclusive add value to the 360 customer? It didn't. They got the timed exclusive software on the day they were always going to get it. All that money was spent on making a PS3 customer having to wait to play the same game.

It's bullshit from a consumer perspective, and it should very much be frowned upon.

But Tekken is better than Virtua Fighter... What an unusual thing to use to determine if someone is a fanboy lol. It's like calling someone a Microsoft fanboy because they prefer Forza over GT.

GAF continues to amuse.

Pages and pages of "Oh they are being Sony from last gen."

Followed by how much you currently love Sony.

And zero commentary about the obvious logical disconnect between the two.

Even if they reunited the classic Rare team and put out Banjo-Threeie I would still refuse to buy this POS console as long as the console continues to have this forced DRM crap.

And that's saying something.

If MS still has DRM and Sony doesn't and they both announce the same price point.. MS ain't killing squat. I don't care how awesome their games are. They'll just look less shitty than they do right now.

Like going from a 0 out of 10 to a 4 out of 10. Pretty big improvement, but still lame as fuck in the grand scheme of things.

If it has some KB/M option then maybe.

I'd take 3-5 good f2p games over LoL any day. I'm not a big MOBA fan even though I have both LoL and Dota 2 installed right now.
