Starlight Inception official trailer

Looks serviceable, but not much else. Flight physics look pretty bad, or more accurately, non existent. Art direction is meh, but if the missions are good and the story doesn't make my brain bleed then I'll give it a whirl.

Wait what is this? Never heard of it and the fact that it's coming to something other than PC is intriguing.

It was a Kickstarter last year.

It raised only $158,000, so I think people should keep their expectations in check when it comes to the graphics. It's not gonna be a AAA game in terms of looks, but hopefully it should play well, since the guy making it used to work at LucasArts (he didn't work on Xwing/Tie Fighter, but still, he probably played them a lot)

I supported this on Kickstarter - looks kind of generic and after watching the trailer, I'm not filled with confidence.

Still the more space based games that get made, the better.

They said on the youtube page that the flight physics are still being worked on, so I'm hopeful that will be tuned up. Right now it seems like the ships only turn on one axis. There's very little roll or pitch in those dogfight clips. Still, it's a space sim on Vita and a PSN version is coming as well. I'm still happy to have kickstarted it.

I didn't back this (because I don't back anything), but definitely interested in a Vita version. That HUD is going to need a lot of work to be viable on Vita though.

I would imagine because the game cost $158,000 (minus KS fees, so like $140,000) to make.

That is not a small sum of money you know.

Game looks interesting, I'll probably check it out on Vita when it launches. I'm glad we are getting somewhat of a resurgence in this genre lately!

It's being made for less than 7 shitty Anita pseudodocumentary movies.

Will buy two copies just to support the dev and genre.

I kickstarted this specifically because I wanted to play it on my Vita. Yeah the flight model looks really stiff at the mo but as the devs say they are still working on the physics so all I can do is trust that they'll pull it off.

Keen on this one.

Well it's not 5 million dollars. Having a team of developers working on this sort of game AND pushing it out within a year is quite the feat for that amount of money. And that it's also coming out on the PS3 and Vita is really nice. Most space games take 5 years to make and are only released on Steam.

No, it's extremely small sum of money to make a modern 3D game.

I would be ecstatic to have a $150,000 budget for my (3D) game. As I'm sure these developers were.

These kinds of games are right up my alley (if done well) and as I already said I'll be checking it out when it releases. I just don't like the idea that people in this thread portraying a negative opinion can be shouted down because of the games budget, if you're really championing this game then do so on its merits as an experience.

Yes you would be as a single person, but hire 20 guys with salaries. Buy Sony Devkits and have a deadline of 12 months and see how far you get with that money :D

Besides looking at those Kickstarter cost breakdowns, i bet they got something like 100,000$ at the end to spend.

My current team is three people not one, and we're entirely self funded so I've got some idea of how money is spent. I didn't claim it was a 20+ person budget, but that doesn't mean it's not a reasonable sum of money to make a game with. It's the amount of money the development team asked for to make the game after all so I hope it's a reasonable sum!

Really didn't think my comment was controversial enough to warrant these responses. It's an interesting game in a somewhat dead genre which makes it doubly interesting, but there's no reason to jump on anybody who doesn't find it compelling (Which again, is NOT me!).

In Project Update 28 on Kickstarter, it's stated that Escape Hatch has matched the Kickstarter funds at a ratio of 2.5:1 with its own money. That would bring the budget to $553,000 (not accounting for Kickstarter and Amazon fees, failed pledges, and physical rewards).

Allright :) should've said that in the first comment you know, to base your opinion on that. Now we just thought you were some guy in a basement doing a platformer on Gamemaker! :D

Well it's a game that will be small priced PSN/steam/whatever else release. So it doen't need to compete with retail $40-60 titles.

And as far as indie games go this seems to be in top 1% production quality wise (number of indie games where you can't even change resolution stopped being funny months ago).

Plus it's triple platform release with 2 consoles - that must be escalating costs.

Vita?!

Nice. That looks promising indeed. I'm hoping with the PS4 on the horizon the Vita will get a 3DS style resurgence. Funny how a kickstarter could be the game to tempt me to get a Vita :)

Looks stiff and like a iOS game. This sounds cynical but the only reason it got funded back then is because it was the first space sim to get on Kickstarter. I was already skeptical back then. Well I guess they made the most out of their budget.

It looks good enough I think from a visual standpoint. It is going to be a downloadable game priced around $15, and it's setting is very grand so I wasn't expecting much there. I am more concerned with how well it runs, how it plays, and what type of hooks they have for this game. Personally can't wait to play this on the Vita. Looking forward to it.

Looks good. Kickstarter it mainly because i want to play it on my Vita. Looking forward to giving it a go. I have to admit, this isn't usually my sort of thing, but still looks interesting.

I don't think it looks that good, the flight animation seems really stiff and janky and the shooting looks weak. It just makes me wish Sidhe had finished making their Project Space game even more. This is what a space shooter should look like:

If the devs could achieve something like that I'd be interested. Maybe they should contact Mario and get some tips.

They're still working on the physics engine apparently.

I'll give it another look when they have that in place, then. I'm willing to give it a shot as I love this genre and have been hoping for a good comeback since the days of X-Wing Alliance, Conflict Freespace 2 and so on.

After watching the trailer, I still can't tell...can you fly from space the entire way down to the surface of one of the planets? Or are there specific "space mission" and "planet mission" types?

I would buy the game based off the ability to just explore to be honest....

Also, it reminds me of late 90s PC games with the physics as of now.

Here's a comment from Escape Hatch regarding this:
Garry Gaber said:
Hi Taylan - Good catch! Yes, one of the coolest features of the game is that you can seamlessly fly from space down to the surface of a planet / moon and back up again...

Sounds better than I thought.

Looks good. If the Vita version is native resolution, I'll buy it for a nice change of pace. Don't get many (any) space flight games on hand helds.
