Sony PS4 does not require an internet connection. Ever. Seriously. Listen. Read.

Sony not enforcing it is weak IMO and its not saying, hey we are against it just as much as the fans are. They should enforce this otherwise in 2-3 years time all publishers will have DRM, it´s just a matter of time before they fuck us over as all other companies are doing.

I hear what you're saying.....

At the end of the day Sony aren't going to tell publishers no restrictions on our system. They are a publisher too. Publishers will continue to try and make more money themselves and the only thing they will listen to is a reduction in sales.

If the system is allowing publishers to decide then we as consumers can at least send a message by not buying their games.

I do think the best answer would be to leave it as it is now for used/lending and publishers do a deal with game retailers that keeps the consumers completely out of it. I'm not confident that will be the case though, or if it's feasible.

Honestly everyone I've spoken to in person about it has laughed it off to, I know a lot of guys and girls who play video games, most of them die hard Xbox fans, and so far no one wants it.
I understand the reason many on here want to not have the Xbox One and PS4 utilise any form of DRM, but we have to remember that we aren't the majority. You are talking to people who play video games probably regularly, and have a good understanding of what is happening. The people who don't have this knowledge are the ones purchasing the consoles with no care in the world about what is happening behind the scenes.

Don't get me wrong, the movement that GAF has caused is incredible to see, but it only trended for 3 hours or so and the public didn't really bat an eyelid at it. This will be the driving force behind both consoles, because we all know just "gamers" like ourselves will never be able to keep a console alive. Sony and Microsoft need the public, its their life force.

I can play my Xbox One just fine 99,99% of time. Wouldn't you say it's going "offline competely"?

No, you will not be able to play games as you need to be connected to activate them. So, will you be able to play games offline? Nope. However, you will be able to do so on PS4.

You're right most of the non hardcore wouldn't even be thinking about this. Until they come to trade or sell their game. Then they kick off.

The biggest question for me would be whether they then kick off big time or moan, bend over and carry on?

I think a massive Kinect 2.0 fail and server crashes are going to give the Xbone a hyooge backlash....WAY before the used games shenanigans gets them.

The fact that they put the Kinect in an anechoic room speaks volumes about how the voice control works.

Yep, all of GAF had a good chuckle. Lemme know when GAFFERS alone keep a console alive and a companies net income in the black. Because, like always, they're the driving force of the industry.

Who do you think buys every console but the Wii in the first 12-18 months? People who are like GAFFERS plain and simple. Who do you think carried the 360 for the first few years? That is right the core games and it trickles down from there. If MS wants to ignore GAFFERS they better well get the casual market off the bat or it will be the WII:U all over again. If they can get the casual market to buy into a 399.99 machine more power to them. I don't see it working very well in todays market place.

In my opinion, Sony/MS/Publishers should make a slow, progressive and customer-friendly approach if they want a share of the used games market. And the foundation of said approach is (or should be) digital games, not DRM.

The industry should focus on making downloadable games a good deal. Make them appealing to gamers. Make the digital game a better CHOICE when compared to the disc version, but don't force people to buy it. The disc game should still be an option, since the world is not ready yet (due to various reasons) to a "digital game only" approach.

In theory, there are many ways that this could be done. They could make the digital game cheaper (and I think that's feasible, considering the lower production cost of the digital format), or make it available a couple of weeks sooner than the disc version. Or even make bundles with DLC or Playstation plus/Xbox live gold.

I know this is a long shot but, in my opinion, it's a possible solution to the used game "problem". At least it's better than DRM.

Who actually believes that those TV features are going to drive sales for the new Xbox at launch? Everyone knows the hardcore gamers go out and buy consoles at launch. So what better way to introduce your new console to the world than TV FEATURES!

It makes absolutely no sense to do what they did, and I cannot understand how anyone can defend that decision.

I can't believe people are actually saying that DRM is good.

If used games is that bad, then take it up with gamestop and retailers and leave us the fuck alone.

Sure games cost a lot to make (once again not our fault) but that doesn't give them to right to fuck us. Yeah Books and CDs don't cost as much to make, but guess what...THEY AREN'T 60 FUCKING DOLLARS either.

This is why people get called corporate shills around here....you are basically sticking up for them over basic customer rights and unless you are employed by a publisher or are a developer yourself...it makes no sense to me why someone will do that.

i get that they should get some of the profit from used...but we shouldn't be the ones they get it from nor should that mean they get to step on our ability to privately resell.

You cannot put digital rights on physical items

I agree that is what every other form of media has done. There is huge incentive to go digital for music but if I refuse can still get old school copy. Same with books and movies they all try and make digital appealing but still keep around physical copies. I agree with you make digital versions more worth while and maybe people will buy them. But keep the physical copy there for those who are collectors or don't have good internet. Gaming publishers are doing the opposite by making digital version complete shit and are trying to kill the physical version to make the digital version the only option.

The Xbone will most likely sell more unless the general public completely ignores the TV features, regardless of how good the PS4 is.

In the US? maybe. Worldwide? No.

The Xbox 360 has already been outsold (or matched, depending on whose numbers you believe) by the PS3, despite the PS3 launching a year later, being significantly more expensive, and harder for developers to code for.

The PS4 has none of those drawbacks, plus a power advantage the PS3 didn't have. Microsoft has a VERY difficult task to outsell sony next gen.

Yep, I believe the real backlash will start when the masses witness first hand what the anti-used game DRM policy does to the used game market.

I still don't understand why people are against an always on system.

I turn my PC on and it is immediately connected to the internet. IT IS ALWAYS ON!

I can count the number of times on one hand that my internet connection has gone down this past year.

The games that I play most are always on! (Dota, LOL, Diablo 3, POE, TF2...)

Why would I be concerned with a system that is always on???

Jesus people...get with the future...it is coming!!! OMG!!! Hide your kids!!!

I think people are jumping into conclusions when it comes to no internet required = no DRM.

Sony games might not have used game DRM, (they already said they wouldn't) but third parties can easily require you to connect to the internet to register the game before you play it for the first time.

Yeah, sort of like an online pass, but required to play the game at all and not just MP.

I don't think it will happen because that stuff can already happen on current systems, and yet we don't see it.

And did your PC refuse to load any applications when your internet was down? No it didn't.

What I don't understand is why the consumer should be willing to make compromises for MS. What are they getting in return for signing in every 24 hours? Absolutely nothing. There is absolutely no benefit to the consumer with this system. None. Zero. Nada.

Because always online means every game you buy (cough rent cough) for 60 bucks will have an expiration date.

When the servers get shut down - lets say after 8 years - your games collection for an always online/24 online check console get useless. They will stop working.

And yet you can still play your PC games completely offline if you want (provided they're not MMORPGs or persistent online worlds of any kind), and the power to control the reliability of the internet in your area is STILL out of the hands of the console manufacturers. You're talking out of one side of your mouth - a selfish one, as it turns out - as just because it is not impacting you at the moment, you feel everyone must be on that same page. It's ridiculous.

Let's hope all our questions are answered the 10th.

As it stands, I'm considering buying the PS4 though. Xbone doesn't really stand a chance at the moment. Everyone has said it but I'll repeat it: the games will make or break these consoles, imo. All the crappy features of the Xbone could evaporate—for me at least—with the slightest mention of great gaming titles.

I don't see anything "blindingly obvious" maybe Blindingly bias both are starting at zero and both have a chance to compete (except japan)

You are aware of Sony having the upper hand in europe too, right?

Why would europe switch over with all this negative buzz going around. I don't see it either.

MS has to show a ton of killer exclusives to pull that off imo.

It's not that I mind it being always on. It is the fact that if/when it cannot connect, I cannot enjoy the games that I own.

My PS3 gets way more play time than the Xbox, and that's mostly due to it's amazing bluray experience, but we don't cut them down for pushing that of course... Bluray was only formed to make a better game play experience, right? Has nothing to do with pushing shit onto people to make more money, right? Yeah, just a larger physical storage medium when there's an absolute shit ton of better options out there. But you all accepted it and love Sony for it. OK.
This made me curious, can you mention some of the alternatives to Bluray that offers about the same size for storage and is just as cheap to produce? Which alternatives are better? Personally i cant think of any. Not DVD because that offers a lot smaller storage space, and games are just getting bigger and bigger when it comes to the storage size. Digital download only was not a realistic senario for a console back in 2005. Digital download also isnt a physical medium, so its not really comparable in that regards. What a lot of options are available?

Bluray was the next evolution of DVD, both when it comes to games and movies. Its also about future proof when it comes for consoles.

Sweet Billy? Is that you? YOU can count on one hand the amount of times that the internet has gone down. That is purely anecdotal. I, for instance, have had my internet go out numerous times this year. Not everyone lives in a place where wi-fi is stable.

the day that MS pulls the plug on it's Xbone servers, is the day that your console becomes one giant brick. And your games become coasters.

I have an old Sega Genesis hooked up to my TV. No DRM, no need to be connected online. Still works

Easy. When I went on deployment, I put Steam in offline mode and continued to play my games while deployed. I had no Internet access for 6 months. A game console that requires an online connection is not capable of being played by "the troops". The only game console that is American is the only one that doesn't support the troops.

I always hate when people complain about juniors. But damn. What's with them lately. The great E3 threads are at risk if there's really some nefarious shit going on.

And yeah, some people seemingly want this DRM-future of their own free will. Thats probably more disturbing.

Don't forget how multiple publishers already turn multiplayer off for old games. Now with the Xbone they'll finally be able to turn off the single player too.

JaseC

gave away the keys to the kingdom.
Which is why the PS4 allowing them to self-publish is important. They can publish that version themselves and make sure there's no DRM on it (with whatever retail presence they can afford), while the 360 is published by someone else and includes Microsoft's DRM.

Sony allowing self-publishing applies to digital games, not retail games (where there have never been such restrictions). I strongly doubt anything has changed since the X360 release of TW2 in regard to CDPR having the resources for retail distribution. Even Valve partners with EA for the retail distribution of its titles (though you won't find any EA branding on the materials).

I agree it is a concern that your game may not work after 8 years. It is not anything new for multiplayer servers to get shutdown by developers though...this happens all the time.

The single player aspect of your console game should continue to work forever and it is a big question mark concerning the xbox...

However, i doubt it is microsofts intention to screw their customers over and not allow them to play the games they purchased. They probably fully intend to keep the sever (registration) or whatever up forever....

Once again....these are big ifs and it looks like (at this point), sony is not going to have any type of online check. (we will see)

You can't defend it and not only that half of those features and companies they show on screen aren't available for the rest of the world only the US. The TV features are fine if they are there but they aren't gonna move the system alone.

I'm perplexed by this reasoning. If you are against the DRM and used game restrictions it shouldn't matter if Microsoft's 15 exclusives are the best games ever.

It's bias to think that MS will sell more globally. All you have to do it look at the evidence this gen.

PS3 launched later at a higher price, and yet it's equal or surpassed the 360 in sales WW. Now both consoles are launching at the same time, with likely similar pricing. PS4 has the power advantage. XBO TV features are only going to be available in the US for the time being, and they are implementing controversial internet required DRM. All that evidence should lead ANYONE to believe that the PS4 will likely outperform the XBO WW.

I don't know and I hope we never know. What I have been told for months is that they hadn't committed to using this system, they were arguing the merits internally. OMGWTFBBQ, another trusted leaker around here, said he heard that EA signed the exclusivity deal (presumably Mirrors edge 2 and respawn's game + early DLC) because MS would agree to anti-used DRM and Sony was not ready to. Sony saw the reaction that MS got in the aftermath of the xb1 reveal and that was pushing them even more towards dropping their system. Which is why I made the thread... to get people online to tweet directly to people like yoshida to give them a little pat on the back in the right direction.

It does sound confusing and unfriendly, especially if you can't use it on a friends system. I honestly don't understand how it works. But they designed it to be offline from the start because they are a far more worldwide console than MS and have penetration in countries with shitty internet.

Hmm
Very interesting..

Microsoft came off a complete failure in the original xbox, the xbox 1.5 one year head start didn't do anything didn't create any "mindshare" either. they also ran into the RROD issue which was a billion dollar loss as well as bad PR. the Xbox 360 sales didn't really turn up until the slim revision same with the ps3. controversy sells
