Of course not, but are you seriously expecting the casual gamer to nickel and dime into this?
Buy a character for 5 dollars, that you might or might not like, out of a roster of X amount of characters! \o/

And as far as current knowledge goes, unlike actual f2p games, you can't just unlock the characters by investing time into playing the game a lot. You HAVE to buy them.

Depends on how smart they are with the pricing model and such.

They could make every fighter like a dollar. Or have free weekends or let you try out characters for free a certain number of times etc.

Without more information it's hard to say if this is a good idea or not.

Best Buy has $60 retail SKU setup on their site. I would assume that means there are two options for players to play this game:

1) FTP w/ 1 character and option to buy more
2) Full $60 purchase with all launch characters available, DLC later with more characters

If this is the case I don't see a problem here.

We also have a pre-order for Minecraft for the same price. It means nothing.

It's A MOBA model. My point is that's how you should do it for a fighting game. The DOTA model is awesome but it's only going to work for DOTA. Valve is in a unique position where they can afford to not charge for characters.

World of Tanks is doing the same. It's riskier, sure, but it's fucking Microsoft we're talking about, not some unknown indie dev.

Yeah, without any details it's hard to criticize or praise it at the moment. I'm hearing from Twitter that they'll probably support a F2P and retail version so who knows at this point.

Yeah, I don't know enough about World of Tanks to comment on that. I'm sure it works in certain situations but I think the only way it would work for fighters is if you lean HEAVY on the character customization. Tekken for example would probably do OK with it.

Microsoft manage to mess up the one thing they did right for gamers??
Tekken and DoA are doing it now. But I see where you're coming from, being MS I wouldn't be surprised each fighter is 10 bucks and you need to pay for stages separately.

Is this a joke? A fighter that has been wanting a comeback from fans for years, and its a F2P digital game? Wow. I'm speechless.

Microsoft... what is wrong with you?

So many dumb decisions that need reversed. You finally give us KI... then you pull this bull with it? Amazing.

I never realized how much that actress resembled Keanu there.

There should be a base four or five free characters to cover the major archetypes.

*Jack of all trades/Ryu
*Rushdown/Magneto or Makoto
*Keepaway/Peacock or Rachel
*Zoning/Dhalsim or Parasoul
*Grappler/Zangief or Potemkin

Everyone else they can charge for with the occasional free weekend for a character so people can get acquainted and hyped about the others.

Parasoul is a zoning character?

She rushdown dawg.

F2P fighters ISN'T a bad concept, but one fighter from the get-go is. Like someone earlier said, having then all in training mode would be the best decision and then decide from there.

Long-awaited sequel to rubbish game series by game developer with poor track record.

Looks awful in every regard. The trailer is awful. The f2p aspect was probably implemented because no-one would buy this otherwise, right?

It's called making a game as cheaply as possible.

It only exists so MS can say they are delivering the game the fans have asked for. They clearly do not believe in the IP and do not want to take any financial risk on it whatsoever.

The idea of going f2p is that it allows them to wring the maximum amount of cash from the small number of enthusiasts who want this game no matter what.

No, Mike Z intended for her to be more zoning/keepaway, but her rushdown tools are good and fun enough that people play her to get in. I would know since I've been following the game for years and have heard Mike complain about it. :lol

Why would people seriously think that, if Double Helix were taking this game and showing it to the competitive scene, it would only be F2P? Do you know how much a shot in the foot it is to have even an exclusive fighting game? You're splitting the fanbase. The game will have problems even making it to tournaments because "Always Connected". It's clear that they're trying to do more with the game.

I think that KI will be both F2P and Full Retail. It's the only logical thing to do, because MS needs titles to be ready at launch, and force-feeding small bits of the game to new owners of the Xboned just seems stupid.

Actually, consider this: What if all Xboned games had a F2P model as replacement of an actual game demo? You'll have the full game downloaded, and have a good portion of it ready to play compared to a regular demo.

As in regard to who's actually developing KI, I really believe that something happened at DH for the better. MS is quite stingy with their IPs after the flop that was Crackdown 2, as is Rare. Hopefully in the future knowing more of Rare's involvement, and what the hell DH was doing after Battleship can actually be a good thing.

Do people just look at LoL and say, we can do that too?

This is such a no brainer. Get alternate costumes that consist of like 5 pieces. Every match has a chance to drop a piece for any character. Winner of the match has a higher chance to win a piece.

Have a tournament section where you fight up against 7 other players. To enter the tournament, you have to put up a piece of a costume. Winner gets the spoils.

Have a mode where you and your opponent can put up pieces in 1 on 1 combat.

Allow trading.

All Rare has to do is make sure the costumes don't alter the model enough that the hitboxes aren't appropriate for the character anymore.

$5 per costume, all characters from the start.

If they are going to limit the number of characters, give us 3 with a training mode that has all the characters.

Yep, I was thinking about Tekken too. Or Virtua Fighter. People love customizations in those games, to the point that it becomes difficult to identify the characters in tournament vids :p it's hard to tell if KI could do the same. Being an old fighter, fans are used to the characters having only 1 outfit. But it was the same for SF4 and Capcom still sold the DLC costumes.

Welp. That's that. After all the DRM bullshit I was holding out hope mainly to see what they would do with the Rare titles. Not only did they not show any, they give KI, one of my favorite arcade games of the 90s the shit treatment. PS4 pre-ordered.

Do all this....but with a good fighting game that people will actually train to be competitive at, instead of one made by the Silent Hill Homecoming/Steel Battalion Kinect team on a system that costs $500

Seems like a stupid idea for it to be f2p only. My guess is that there is a retail SKU as well with all the characters unlocked. I mean mad catz is making a tournament stick for this.

The point is they don't want to spend money on developing a whole game in case it turns out to be a bomba. So they will make it and sell it piece by piece. When people stop buying the DLC the development will stop faster than you can say "C-C-C-C-Combo breaker".

It's indicative of a publisher that doesn't believe there is a sizeable market for this game. Double Helix is probably the cheapest dev MS could find.

People are saying this is a good thing, so players only buy the characters they want. Who wants a fighter with only 2 or 4 fighters? I remember when Skullgirls came out how a lot of people in the FGC complained that this budget title only had 8 characters, but now we shouldn't complain about having to buy all other characters? So, when you buy a character, will you be able to fight other characters, or do you need to buy said characters first before you can fight against them?

It'll probably just be an easy way of entry, and not a came-neutering measure. Microsoft apparently had to jump through hoops to get to use the name "Killer Instinct" again, so I bout they'd make such obvious oversights as making it impossible for people to try out other characters, or making online play ONLY VS the characters you purchased.

DOA5U and Tekken Whateveritscalled already have taken measures against this. Why wouldn't this.

Anybody thinking this is a measure for the consumer to save money is a it naive to say the least, as MS has every intention to make this more profitable than the current situation. Get ready to pay $ 5.00 per character, and $2.50 for a stage or so. Buy all available characters and stages and then tell me you saved money compared to buying a complete game now.

Or just get ready for it to be a new delivery method to... the same amount of content you get with anything.

People keep assuming the worse, but who'se to say this game couldn't be XBO's version of Steam's Team Fortress 2? Every game that comes out could have useless trinkets that tie back to this, and it could be a dumping ground for promoting XBO exclusives by tossing them into this game. You could have people paying full price for games they won't even play, just to get items for the F2P monster in the corner.

Besides, would you really want to have the situation that everyones copy is different? Some might buy all characters, others might only buy half the cast, where some people might only buy two. Great to play with friends: " You want to play some KI? I only have 3 characters, though..."

You can bet the base game file will be the same for everyone, just like the Compatibility updates do currently for Mortal Kombat, or SFIV series.

Even if they did restrict characters to accounts, you'd most likely be able to sign into your own account to play the characters you own. I doubt they'd do this though.

Serious Question: Why does everyone act like a "buy it all" or "season pass" option won't exist for a F2P console game?

For me, one of the things I loved about original Xbox, was that there were a plethora of playable demos available when I got the system; some of them were even meaty! That Lost Planet MP demo lasted me as long as some actual games.

This being positioned as a "Free To Play" has the same feel to me; It'll be something to play, especially if you only could purchase 1 game after the multi-hundred dollar purchase of the console + controllers + subscription time itself.

Horrible.

I just hope Capcom don't get any fucking bright ideas from this. Not that it would change anything online, 80% of people pick Ryu/Ken any way. zzzzzzz

gonna be 5$ per character, can already see it.

if you want the full roster you'll probably end up paying more then if the game came out complete at retail.

It's good to see some thought put into it all, rather than the usual over-reactions that assume the worse in EVERYTHING from moment 1.

I'd be happy with many XBO games having a F2P model, it... really is what demos are. And if every game was to break it's SP and MP into separate potions, and let you pay for either both as a retail-price game, or each as separate, it might even offset the current DRM just a bit. (Pay 30 each for self and best friend to get multiplayer for a game on day one, rather than needing to each get the game for 60 on another platform.)

OP is wrong. The devs were on IGN playing live and stated repeatedly that the DEMO uses F2P model (which is actually pretty cool)l. The demo is the full game with only Jago and buyable characters. There is a full retail version as well and the game is a launch title.

Also will be at EVO revealing a new character.

Thread title change (lol).

Gamespot stream confirmed that it's offering both a full version and a 'demo' version where you get one character and the entire SP campaign and can trial (I think) new characters before you buy.

Looked pretty neat in the gameplay footage.

To reiterate, it's offering a full version that includes all the content and a 'demo' version that only offers one with the option to buy more.
