I'd like to meetup after finals, but my housemates and I are leaving on a road trip on the last day of finals. Maybe some of us can meet up with the Count next week if we aren't all too busy?

And, also, why isn't there an Austin OT yet? The continued life of this thread post-SXSW shows that the demand is there.

Our location and ages will probly play a role. Downtown or central seems to be most convenient unless there's some crazy festival going on. Also, are most of us old enough to drink? :p

Any place with a liqueur license is always a sound choice.

Welp, I kinda forgot to mention a small monthly fighting game tournament in Round Rock, but yeah. That was tonight. Tonight's voted game was Injustice, but that's because I was late. I brought a Skullgirls setup and just played Skullgirls ANYWAY! XD

Anywho, it's the last Thursday of every month from 7P-9P. It's fun.

(if you hadn't figured it out, when I'm posting something vg related, it's probably about Fighting Games)

I hate going to Austin. I enjoy Houston with the crime and the pollution and the construction.

I hate Houston.

Where at?

I can talk to David and see if he'll let us set up at the Game Over Lamar store and play some games. Maybe a Power Stone 2 tournament. We can head to Pinballz down the street afterward with a trunk full of beverages to take advantage of their BYOB policy.

Subscribed to this thread and keeping tabs on what, if any, plans get made. I'm pretty close to Austin so I might be down for a meet-up sometime (depending on wife and baby aggro).

It's so cold >_< From 90 to 40!

I was swimming outside at 1AM last night... woke up this morning and its winter...wtf...Texas is weird...also where is this UFO place everyone is talking about? Im by UT campus and would like to take a bus there

EDIT: Actually where are cool arcades in Austin?

As someone who moved from Minnesota to Austin, it can stay this warm for the rest of the year. When summer comes, I"m going to melt...

Not bad! The undercard seems HUGE though.. bigger than normal. And I haven't even seen the name before of 99% of them. I foresee a lot of getting there at 3 or 4. :lol

The lineup always looks great until they release the schedule and you see a lot of the bands you really wanted to pay for are playing at the same time. :(

No 1 day tickets either? Looks like I'll have to hope for aftershows or Houston stops. :-/

The worst is when bands will count these festival stops as their Austin/Texas stops for that tour, especially when it's years between tours. Last year Jack White played at least 3 shows in Austin within a few months but 1 was ACL another a secret SXSW show and another an ACL TV taping. I think the last time he played Austin before that was with The White Stripes in 2003*. IIRC it was the same deal with Pearl Jam and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs on their In Blitz tour.

*Forgot about Dead Weather/Raconteurs but was mostly thinking about the opportunity to hear his White Stripes material live.

I'm in!!!! Squatting gaf for a months and now i am in!!!!

I may have my hss 0130 done for the meetup. LS-36 (yes 36) and PS-15's. If not then i still have my Namco stick with an LS-33 with a 55 spring. - Frank

Welp. I found out today that when parking downtown, "Public Parking" does NOT mean it's free parking. That's $150 in towing fees that I'm never getting back.

Anywho, there's another monthly fighting game tournament this upcoming Thursday in Round Rock. Again, I'll be there with a Skullgirls setup, so no matter what happens, we're still playing Skullgirls.

So couldn't find a thread more so dedicated to Austin as a whole, so sorry if I missed it and this isn't the right place to ask this. I may be moving to Austin in a few weeks or a few months...depends how quickly I hear back from a few jobs and how things fall in place (currently residing in Dallas, more specifically Lewisville).

Anyone have any suggestions on good apartments/good areas to live? I currently pay about ~1500 total in rent+utilities, but I was hoping to cut that down to around 7-800 rent + whatever the rate is for utilities (250 or so I'd say?) just because I don't need to be living in as nice of a place as I currently do (waste of money - I'd rather buy a house and drop that kind of money on a mortgage tbh).

The potential jobs I have lined up are along or around i35, one is further north closer to Round Rock and the other is pretty much smack dead middle between Round Rock and Austin (if you look at google maps based off of where the city names appear - it's in the middle of those two).

I just turned 24 a few weeks ago and I'd really live to be around people in my age range as the places I've lived over the past few years have been mostly older people and it's harder to meet new people/make new friends/etc. So Austin-GAF, suggestions? Thanks; it'll be much appreciated!

First of all, happy belated birthday. Second, welcome to Austin!

You should have no trouble finding a single bedroom apartment in the 700 sq ft range for $700 - $800 anywhere in Austin as long as you stay away from the numbered streets and outside of downtown. Our apartment is 630 sq ft and we are paying around $1000 a month, rent and utilities combined. We live near Parmer & Anderson Mill, which is in Northwest Austin, almost in Cedar Park.

The major tech companies are clustered around the Duval and Mopac (aka Loop 1) intersection. Lots of singles and d.i.n.k.s. in that area. Things seem to be slowly centering around the "Domain", a large shopping and apartment living complex (actually it's more of a neighborhood now). IBM, National Instruments, and maybe even Samsung are roughly within walking distance. This area would also put you relatively close to the job sites you mentioned, but far enough away from the mess that is I35.

Traffic can be pretty rough everywhere in Austin so you may want to consider living close to where you will work. I wouldn't recommend commuting from one side of the city to the other. I work with a few South Austin residents and they claim hour+ commute times to and from our office in North Austin.

Once you figure out where you are going to move, contact an apartment locator. Austin has had an absurd influx of people over the last 5 or 6 years. Housing development (like roads and infrastructure) has fallen behind and the renters' market has been awkwardly picking up the slack. Finding vacancy may be difficult without an agent.

Apartments are full, so be prepared to hunt.

I advise:
1. Live close to work. Traffic is rapidly getting worse and in a few years will be horrible.
2. Get the top floor, so you have less noise.
3. Choose an apartment in which the top floor *doesn't* have a high rise ceiling. Most apartments have poor insulation and the same AC unit for these high rise ceilings meaning you can come home to an apartment in the 80s even with the AC running all day in August. Fucking sucks.

Also, expect $750 starting rent for a large single bedroom in north Austin right now. Utilities vary. If you take the above advice, you'll probably average $100/month for water/gas/electric combined. If you get a high rise ceiling, expect nearly $200 just for electricity in August.

Thanks for the info and the happy belated birthday; really appreciate it! The thought of moving to Austin excites me greatly - I moved to the DFW area last May after finishing up school (I'm originally from Nebraska). It was an easy move because I have a lot of family here that I could live with, but it's just way too business-like and I guess stuckup/fast paced for me? From everything I hear about Austin it's a much more laid back, relaxed and welcoming environment. Plus the music scene is top notch - which is a big draw for me.

I originally worked in downtown Dallas and had an hour+ commute every morning so I'm used to that. Now I have about a 30 minute commute so traffic doesn't really bother me too much.

I also hear you about the fast-paced growth and lack of infrastructure. I work in Frisco which is also rapidly growing way too fast and it's outgrown the infrastructure so bad it gets ridiculous.

Thanks again for the info, it's really appreciated. Do you know by chance of some websites to look at more info about this "Domain" area or anything? One of my potential employers could be Yodle; is that located anywhere near what you're talking about? I just know its along i35. My degree is in IT so it seems like the perfect place to be really; just trying to find the right match/company to work lol.

Oh lord, Austin traffic. It doesn't help that there are only three real roads that run north and south:

One is an interstate highway (I-35)

One runs straight all the way through downtown (Lamar)

One has all the tech companies nestled along it (Mopac)

Ah well. Leave early, and load your phone/cloud with good podcasts haha.

In other words, I went to Ramen Tatsuya today. The tonkotsu shoyu broth was unbelievably savory, the katsu slider is absurdly good too. I tried my friend's tsukemen dip though, and that shit is amazing. I've gotta get the tsukemen next time.

Austin is pretty laid back, IMO. The traffic drives me nuts (and I grew up in Houston), but everything else seems to move at a slower pace.

I checked out Yodle's location and something around the Domain area wouldn't be bad at all. You could take Parmer out to I35 head South a short distance to your office. Probably wouldn't even need to get onto the freeway. At the end of the day you could continue South to Breaker and take it back to Mopac, making a nice loop.

Here's the Domain's site: http://www.thedomainaustin.com/

It looks like they are owned by Endeavor Real Estate. There are several apartment complexes in that area and further West, so don't take the Domain as the end-all-be-all. It is a shopping center mixed with apartments and fighting with shoppers for parking and access may not be ideal for some.

You might even want to check out the Arboretum area (Jollyville & Duval / Jollyville & Breaker). It's a little further West, but it's a bit more lived in. Even as far out as I am at Anderson Mill & 183 / Anderson Mill & Parmer wouldn't be a bad commute to the section of I35 where Yodle is. All of these areas would have relatively easy access to Round Rock too.

Christ, that reminds me. Aren't they shutting down one or two lanes on Mopac this summer to start construction on toll or HOV lanes?

Ok guys who wants a TV!?! I got a hold of a 32 inch trinitron that i no longer want. Exit Planet Dust sold me his 27 inch trini so i am good. Free to anyone who wants it. The thing is its heavy so a dolly would be preferred. Or bring Hagrid to help out. let me know if anyone. And if this violates a TOS let me know, i dont see anything but i am not sure. PM or respond here. Want to keep it local because really this thing is a beast.

Hey Austin Gaf, finally got an account a week ago after years of lurking. I've only lived in Austin for three years but already love it. I live over off oltorf and wickersham. I'm definitely down to go to the classic games expo in july, going to try to go with my wife and some of my co workers!

Also, another super fun thing we should all consider checking out is the rocrace.com
They don't have a date for it yet for Austin, but it should be coming sometime this year. It's basicly a 5k run with wipeout inspired obstacles along the way. Sounds super fun.

You really shouldn't come here without a job first.

I would also recommend having a job, or at least some kind of social network, but it can be done. I did it with $15k. Took 3 months to find a job and I was freaking the fuck out near the end, but apparently it can take much longer.

Just a shame the games industry has taken such a beating here.

The pool at Shipe opened last night. Word. Now maybe more people will be there for pick up games during the week.

Is $11k and a paid off car enough to move to Austin and get a start there?

You really shouldn't come here without a job first.

I think it's very doable with that amount of savings but be warned that rent is not exactly cheap and you'll eat into that fairly easily. As long as you're diligent about finding a job, that'd be fine IMO.

I always recommend to people to try UTemps for a position. I didn't know about it the first three months I lived here (while I was unsuccessfully looking for a job) but I'm glad I found out eventually. It is a temp service for jobs on campus and if you're willing and are accepted, you can get pretty steady placement. Quite a few of their positions result in a permanent job or at least put you in a position to get one.

I moved here without a job and a brand new car loan to worry about and I'm making it work so far. Met my wife here 2 years ago, married and living together in a decent sized apartment off oltorf. Working 6 days a week making around 13 bucks an hour

Yeah I'm just asking because basically for the last couple decades my grandparents were saving up for my siblings and cousins. My grandma surprised me quite a bit when she said that I would get $10k upon graduating my technical school and she said to use it to help me move. I just don't want to squander that money.

As for types of jobs, I'm receiving an IT education (Microsoft, Cisco, Linux) but I'm totally fine with doing restaurant work too. Just being able to make ends meet and go to a party here or get a game there is enough for me. Working 6 days a week sounds fine to me as well.
