Torture of a half-naked female character is such great imagery in a medium already riddled with problems when it comes to gender representation.

This is frankly stupid.

You're right that would never happen to a male character in this series...

Would they leave her shirt on when she is getting electrocuted/tortured? In every fucking torture scene in MGS history, the torturee has been shirtless(sometimes naked). Why the FUCK is this anything else other than our "anti sexualization for women" mentality?

It's not like that was presented as a positive thing in any way, or like there are only women being tortured half-naked in that trailer, or the series as a whole. This is frankly a non-issue.

apparently some people think we should not have female characters in games, i dont see how else to explain it.

Also I would like to hand the stomach cutting scene the award for the grossest thing I've ever seen in a game.

On the one hand it's pretty technically impressive they got that all modeled out in a believable fashion.

On the other hand... eeeeeewwwwww...

God damn, you guys all fell for that bait, huh?

It's not even just about that. It's about all the people whining about Quiet showing some skin, like it all of a sudden devalues everything else in the trailer. It really isn't shit. At all. All of these quasi-feminist bullshit is annoying, mang.

There may be a lot of problems with female representation in Kojima games.

This is not one of them.

Completely out of context. Kojima definitely has a history of bad gender representation, but this is not one of those times.

Heck, bikini bottom and cleavage aside, I don't even think Quiet's outfit is that inappropriate. If you're standing around in the sun all day, you'd probably want to be shirtless too.

Oh, no doubt. For better of for worse, Kojima just topped the scene where Naked Snake gets his eye shot out in MGS3.

Yes, Quiet's design is pretty dumb. The torture? This is MGS, man.

Oooh, nice. "A wise man denied his homeland". Makes total sense.

Yeah, I actually thought the look of the character had some Native American influences, but after remembering hearing about code talkers and then brushing up on them again, I'm pretty certain that's how Code Talker will play into the story.

Uh, ok.

Big Boss has been interrogated/tortured bare-chested. More than once. Why is that not a problem, but when it's a half naked woman it is?

Heck, this happened.

Fucking vulgar(!)

Those guys weren't bikini babes. If she was dressed as an actual soldier and not a fucking bikini babe with Aya Brea pants, then I would be fine with it. It's the complete disconnect between something serious like military torture and a female soldier sitting in a fucking bikini outfit being tortured.

The Boss was a good female character, imo.

This scene in that screenshot and Quiet as a character design are just stupid.

Yes, Quiet's design is pretty dumb. The torture? This is MGS, man.

You are right, but it's mostly the clash between the stupid design and the scene itself that motivates a sort of dissonance for me.

Raiden is completely naked. His genitals are covered with various people's heads and a soda-can through camerawork. He doesn't even have underwear on.

Rag on Quiet's design all you want (it's totally fair), but trying to tie into the in-game torture sequence as some packaged devaluing of women is a pretty foolish thing to do.

Imagine the outrage if Raiden had been female

And actually being naked is a main part of the whole torture process. Torture is all about humiliation. Just look at the Guantanamo torture pics...
This as well. Just remember the pictures from Abu Ghraib. In fact would it probably make the scenes even more realistic if all the people being tortured were stripped naked.

He also made The Boss probably the single greatest female character in gaming.

My problem with the scene is not about nudity. She could be naked in that torture scene and it would be perfectly fine, as long as she was actually equivalently armored/equipped like other soldiers are (before the torture), just like Raiden or Snake were in the prior games.

Don't misunderstand my comments, as I don't want to overblow the whole thing as some large, packaged devaluing of a gender. Just saying that from an outside perspective, along with the history (and current controversies) in the video games industry and culture, this scene would without context add more fuel to the fire.

How about Quiet to be tortured naked afterwards by Ocelot? :p

See, that would be much more appropriate.

From a gameplay perspective this looks to be the best ever MGS. It's great Kojimacseemsvto telling the story via gameplay as well.

Ya'll best hope that no gaming feminist will get in Kojima's ear if you like the female designs in MGS, because that would be the MGS theme debacle all over again.

What are you even on about?

Is this that situation where you know you aren't making sense, but still want to make some kind of point?

Uh .. so this doesn't have anything to do with the torture. If she was dressed in armour before, you wouldn't care about how she looks during the torture? Then why mention the torture?

You can harp on Quiet's design, sure. I've heard arguments both ways. I'd concede the point regarding the torture.

So it's actually about her outfit and not about the torture? Because your initial post made it sound like torture is one of your issues.

My opinion on the outfit itself is kind of mixed. On the one hand it seems like obvious fan service, just to get some sexy lady in there, but on the other hand is she a sniper, so no real need for armor. Then she is also in Afghanistan, which means tons of heat, so it would make sense to wear less. In the end does it actually have a lot of resembles to Rambo's "outfit" in Rambo 3

Kojima doesn't bend his will to the whims of others, unless there are extenuating circumstances like the legal stuff with the MGS theme, Even then I'm not sure if it's out because of legal reasons, if he just doesn't want it in the games anymore, or maybe a combination of both.

Kojima has enough clout to do practically whatever he wants since MGS is Konami's last real franchise.

I'm super impressed with the openness in which they're displaying / including strong political and mature themes.

Many years ago, games dared not go there. I mean, we still have stupid knee jerk drama like the Tomb Raider / Bioshock Infinite stuff, but I genuinely look forward to more deep and mature games. (Of course I don't expect every game & genre to be overly serious).

I'm a little worried about how Kojima handles the racial issues, but we'll see.

Sniper Wolf, EVA

The funny thing is that Eva is really an interesting character in MGS3, and her body and appearance are also one of her assets, you can see in the game that when she is posing as a Russian officer she dresses normally. But she has to seduce Snake, just "in case" :b.

IMO the worst female representation of a female is Naomi in MGS4

EDIT And of course Meryl in MGS4, specially at the end :double facepalm:

Broken Joystick

At least you can talk. Who are you?
Not that we really need much more Eli is Liquid speculation but his description of "A youth who curses his fate" rang a bell in my head so I went back to see if I was right. There's a little mention of "cursed genes" in a speech Liquid gives in Metal Gear Solid 1, the exact line is

Liquid : Yes, twins, but we're not ordinary twins… we're twins linked by cursed genes.

Also, in the room where you fight Psycho Mantis, there are statues/busts with bandages around their heads, which has some similarities to characters we've seen in the trailers. Just a little tidbit.

HIS !? Was EVA a
transsexual?
:p

So sex appeal = bad representation of women in games? Jesus. Both of those characters are smart and powerful.

Some of you have very weird understanding of feminism.

I was just adding to your list mon.
