As a Bethesda fanboy, what are my options?

I'm sorry if this question comes off as ignorant/stupid. I have a very, very limited understanding of how video game publisher exclusives/favoritism works. Here is my question:

I currently have a PS3. I've put more time into my Bethesda titles than all of my other games combined (hell I've probably put more time into Skyrim alone than all my other non-Bethesda titles combined). I love my PS3, but having to wait for DLC for these titles has been driving me crazy. The worse was with Skyrim, between not knowing whether I would get any DLC and having to wait a long ass time for the DLC that was confirmed.

So I guess my question is this: If I nowadays primarily look forward to Bethesda titles, what will my options be next gen if I want to be sure to get all Bethesda DLC, preferably without outrageous waiting times? Will Bethesda likely release DLC last on PS4 next gen as well? Is there any way of knowing?

I don't have the money to be buying both the PS4 and the xbone. If it wasn't for this single issue, I think the PS4 would be an easy choice.

If you like Bethesda games your best bet is getting a PC. (Especially) their games are so much better there it isn't even funny.

With consoles it's impossible to know if Bethesda is cooking up some kind of exclusivity deal with MS or Sony. So you might want to wait for something like that to show up if that is indeed the case.

if you're a bethesda fanboy, I'd really consider going for a gaming PC imo. considering Bethesda love releasing broken games, you're getting better performance, mod support, community fixes, etc.

With Bethesda games your best option is the PC. Honestly you get to mod the games, it has better load times, nicer graphics and a slew of other positives... such as getting the games on awesome discount sales.

If you do not want to go the route of the PC then you just need to pick the console you like the most and hope for the best. This last generation MS seemed to have the jump on content releases first with timed exclusives. No one can guarantee that will be the same this time around.

PC may have a small wait for DLC but that is nicely offset by the fact that you can use mods.

I didn't even think of that. My friends tell me the Steam workshop for Skyrim is absolutely amazing. Starting to sound like a PC might be the best option for me.

It really depends on the money spent by Sony or Microsoft. I could see timed DLC going either way this gen. Might want to wait to e3 2014 to decide if that matters a lot to you.

Absolutely. Not just Skyrim but go back to Fallout 3, New Vegas and Morrowind to name a few. Each one of them a new games with an endless selection of PC mods.

Yeah, the workshop is VERY nice for people (like me) who don't want to get into the nitty-gritty of modding (at least not often). You literally click and select the mods you want at can enact/disable them any time, and auto checks for updates.

It doesn't matter what platform you choose because Bethesda will always release buggy games.

I put over 20 hours into FO:NV on the PS3 only to have my saves stop working. Everyone said to play it on the PC but the same thing happened to me on there.

If you're thinking next-gen consoles only (not PC), I'd go PS4 based on the evidence so far. Looks like there's some kind of Assassin's Creed style co-marketing deal going down - Online was featured at Sony's E3 show, and Skyrim is being heavily promoted in the site that links to their new ad (as well as being in the ad itself). Of course, it could be more complex - an Elder Scrolls favouritism on PlayStation and a Fallout deal on Xbox, which would match previous Fallout 4 rumours/rumblings - but the fact is we simply don't know yet.

At least on PC there's an army of modders to pick up where the developers left off. Morally dubious? Absolutely but at least that's how you get those games playable.

Don't even need a crazy computer. I was able to play Skyrim on my laptop (Core i5, 4GB Ram, Intel HD 3000) and it ran fine on medium settings.

I primarily played on a faster desktop, but tried it out on my laptop while on the go and it was perfectly playable.

there are fixes on PC though. you're relying on Bethesda's patching on consoles, which means you basically know you're buying a broken product.

I agree with the above posters that PC is the way to go for Bethesda games.

If that's not possible for you financially, then I think you'll still be fine to go with PS4. A lot of Bethesda's issues with PS3, both in terms of stability and timing of DLC releases were related to the fact that it was a difficult platform for them to code for. That shouldn't be an issue with PS4.

If you really love Bethesda, you should probably get a PC.

Still, I don't think you have to worry about late DLC on PS4. I think the main reason Bethesda were down on the PS3 is because it was harder to develop for and had a more complicated RAM set-up than the 360.

The roles seem to be reversed regarding that for next gen.

Wow must have rough playing Skyrim on ps3. First the game wouldn't work after like 30-40 hours then they wouldn't release any dlc for a long ass time. I would just build a gaming pc if I were you. When they release the next TES game, you won't have to worry about your game being broke after playing it for a few hours and then having to wait weeks for them to fix it.

PC will be the place to go, especially because of mod community support.

But if you are going consoles, PS4 seems like a safe bet: significantly more powerful than the One, has a significantly easier to developer for x86 architecture that makes porting around from PC/One extremely easy. And this time around Bethesda seems keen on supporting it, with Elder Scrolls Online making its E3 2013 Debut at Sony's press conference. and it'll have the console BETA for the system first before the other platform.

It is pretty clear that Sony has a much better relationship with Bethesda this go around than last gen, so unless Microsoft takes some more exclusivity windows for DLC, I think you'll be fine. Unfortunately there's no way to predict that until one of their games gets closer to release... but at least with Elder Scrolls Online, it seems the roles may even be reversed this time.

And if you are not picky or are much of a micromanager, some mods are bundled so you literally can download and activate a textures/effects/music/sound/all-in-one experience if you don't feel the desire to pick from here and there. And, while it's been a while since using the workshop, the rating system was a good enough guide for me to filter the genuinely great stuff from the average efforts.

..Didn't think of that. Will the PS4 see Bethesda's DLC efforts first? That would be really interesting.

It sounds like you're asking about consoles, so I'm not going to be completely unhelpful and suggest PC.

I think you can be safe going with Playstation this time around, though. Bethesda's problems with DLC on the PS3 were largely due to developing on the difficult architecture of the platform and Sony have completely remedied that situation this time around.

So basically, dont worry about this when deciding on which console to get. Consider it a non-issue and base your decision on other factors. The only thing that would affect DLC timing would be if one or the other buys exclusivity for a period of time, which usually isn't ever more than a month.

First post says it all. If you want to play it safe and better, go PC console wise I"m not even sure Ms or Sony...Sony or MS has some type of deal in the works with them

Why not wait until Bethesda at least announces a new game? I guarantee you'll have time to buy/build a device to play it on in the time between previews and release.

Is there any possibility that the Steam workshop would ever come to the PS4? I've seen some degree of integration between the PS3 and Steam in the past (I think when I bought Portal 2 it required I sign into Steam on my PS3, and I got a copy of the game for on Steam for PC even though I bought it for PS3...?)

Bethesda fanboy on a ps3, ha!

Yeah it has been brutal playing several of the Bethesda titles at release. I think FO:NV was the most rough actually. I picked it up the day it was released and I had to hard reset about once every 45 mins. Which lead to me having to save constantly, and saving took forever which really made it hard to get fully immersed.

If I could play something like Skyrim or FO:NV with no bugs and minimal load times I think I'd probably never leave my room.

I tried to fix it with mods and nothing ever worked. Believe me I loved the 20 hours of NV that I got to play but I will never attempt to play the game again.

Just wait for them to announce their next game, I'm sure one of the 1st parties will want DLC timed exclusivity & once you know that your decision will be easy.

This gen? Still PC for best bet if you can go that way. You know all that DLC? Imagine even more of it and all for free! Yes, that's right "for free". And the paid DLC too of course. Andy the chance (if you're a bit more patient than you sound) to get their stuff for cheap during a Steam sale.

If not, I'm gonna suggest PS4 (which is going to seem odd as Beth have been Xbox centric for two gens) but consider:

  • They actually appeared with Sony on stage this E3 unless I'm mistaken so I reckon this gen they're going to confuse us by cuddling up to Sony (maybe they're afraid of bad Karma and realise they need to make up for Skyrim on PS3)
  • Unless "The Cloud" really is the shits for open world games the higher specs of PS4 should be better for open world than base spec XBone
  • It's really starting to look like PS4 is going to be the lead this gen

That's how I see it right now anyway. Being honest I just couldn't recommend the XBone as things stand so to be fair take that into consideration - I just can't get behind what seem to be MS core polices for the device.

Seriously, if you love Bethesda games PC is the easiest choice you can make. The game will look significantly better, you will get significantly more content and you will get significantly more options on game customization. All for free, most all before DLC comes out. Just recently there was an entirely new, complete campaign released for New Vegas.

If you haven't played Bethesda games on PC with a healthy number of mods you have an entirely new game to play.

Try Morrowind while you wait for their next gen titles, it will run pretty well on most PCs now and the mods completely change the game. Then I think the choice will become infinitely clearer to you.

Not a bad idea.

I have Morrowind on Steam. What are the most have mods for it? What is the best graphics mod for it?

Is there a Steam workshop for it?
