Well now, this is a pretty darn eventful week for strategy and tabletop, with XCOM, Rivals for Catan and all. Yipes.

For those of you guys who liked Ravenmark: Scourge of Estellion, or folks who just like turn-based strategy wargames in general, I just wanted to let you guys know we've just kicked off the iOS open beta for Ravenmark: Mercenaries. Mercenaries is the asynchronous multiplayer sequel to the original Ravenmark, and its free-to-play model is inspired by a League of Legends style customization system. (read: not pay-to-win!)

The open beta will be about three weeks long, and it's currently only available on the Singapore, New Zealand and Australia App Stores. If you folks in the Americas and Europe wanna get in on the beta... well, I think I can trust Gaffers to be resourceful enough to find a way to play. :D Check it out here

Man the last level of Kingdom Rush Frontiers is kicking my arse!!

I've tried with bags of cash, and also stopping spending at round 10 to save up for when the boss comes but I keep getting smashed...

Anybody got any friendly tips?

We're fairly afraid that there are so many damn gamers in Canada, you guys would outright destroy our servers before we have a chance to calibrate. ;) We're just trying to sort out initial facepalm-worthy hiccups with a small audience for this period. Depending on the download numbers for the 3 territories engaging in the open beta, we *might* open it up to Canada. I'll keep you chaps posted.

I can't get cloud saves working for X-Com on my ipad and iphone. Played the game on iPad, beat a few missions, but when I try to play on iPhone there's no "resume game" option. Help?
You need to manually save to iCloud in the save game menu.

I'm having the same problem. I did the manual save thingy to icloud on my ipad last night, installed X-Com to my phone so I could continue at work on my break but I only get the option to start a new game, am I doing it wrong?

Lots of Necromancers worked for me; add two Dwarven towers with flamers beneath the dude (but not directly beneath) on the two points that jut out. Used Cronan/Beastmaster (L10) as well.

Concetrated on getting a few Necros up at key points, one on each entrance; two directly below dude; then on corners. Added the Dwarf towers. Added more mages/necros for the teleporting dudes. Add Plague to the necros around the centre.

Tip: If necros; go one side heavy; and use your hero on the other side. And make sure you have a few down the path.

Fair enough, fair enough. :p I'll be looking forward to it!

I got Clash of Heroes and selecting units is bit annoying (especially during the tougher battles when you select wrong units), but otherwise plays just fine on iPhone. I just wish it was more optimised for small screen - if the gameplay was suited for vertical play this game would be perfect (an issue I had with 2nd puzzle quest as well).

And I guess I can't pass on the Little Inferno huh? Is HD the version to get?

Both Infinity Blades lost my interest fast. They're nice visual showcases but they're as shallow as an Angry Birds game.

Yep, that dollar spent on it ain't worth it.

OTOH, XCOM wtf. I'm getting screwed out of the other classes - i'm piled up high with snipers now!

I'm happy they keep churning quality "Where's my" games and content, my mother completed all stages in Water and Perry, and does the same with the DLC packs as soon as they're out of the gate. She actually plays everything twice, on iPhone and iPad. When I showed her a Where's my Mickey was released she bought it like a crack fiend. I haven't played it yet but from what I checked it has the usual level of polish and adds new mechanics.

Exactly the same with... um... "my Mum".

"She" would like some more levels for the recent paid packs which came out for Water and Perry though.

lol, yep. I play them too, the stages get challenging quickly and the solutions and use of mechanics are pretty clever. Glad the series got so successful, it's well deserved. It was a nice surprise to see the Mickey one on the App Store, I usually know about these releases on GAF and other sites first but haven't been able to check as much these days.

Infinity Blade 2 is still one of the best original pseudo-AAA games on iOS. The combat get a lot deeper as the opponents level up, calling it shallow is a mark of peasantry. It's definitely repetitive, but so are 90% of iOS games...either you like the core gameplay or you don't.

Just checked the iPad charts and XCom is riding high. Glad to see it.

I can smell the tears of Gaming side from here, how very dare iOS have premium titles that sell well, what if other developers see the gigantic install base as an opportunity? what will they do then???

XCOM runs like absolute arse on my iPhone 4. Fortunately, I bought it to play on my iPad 3 so I'll get by.

Really pleased to see it (apparently) selling well.

I love the reactions in all these iOS controller threads. hilarious.
I really want to drag out some NPD numbers from the last 5 years to show just what sort of effect iOS had on handhelds for perspective, but I just can't be arsed.

I'm pretty sure it explicitly says that devices earlier than the 4S aren't supported, doesn't it?

Speaking of the iPad 3...there were a lot of rumors surrounding the announcement of its successor that the reason for the quick turnaround time was due to processing power needed for forthcoming applications/games (ie. Microsoft Office). This may not be the thread to ask in but was that ever borne out?

Never heard that rumor, sounds like nonsense. More likely Apple wanted to get a new iPad out with the lightning connector.

A handy little trick is that you can zoom in on the battlefield in the iPhone version. It will only show half the screen, so you'll have to keep zooming in/out, but it helps prevent misclicks.

Yeah turn on Minus!
fucking Minus app and its sucky "share link feature"

Proper link:

So I'm having this problem with iCloud as well and I only see the X-Com option like this pic shows on my iPhone with iOS7 but not on my iPad with iOS6... FWIW I'm playing primarily on the mini and want to have the option to pick my game up on iPhone as needed.

Have concluded this is an iOS 7 glitch, I wonder where the save game is coming from though.

I re-produced it by deleting the game and re-installing it:

The date is now 20/06/2013 but otherwise identical.
As you can see the tutorial is in the background.

iOS 7 has the "awesome feature" of telling every app/game the same MAC address for every device. Lots of applications use the MAC address to identify each device (for example for saving online) so all of the will have problems on iOS 7 until they are updated.

I stand by this too. The game has a lot of depth that isn't immediately apparent.

I loved IB and IB2, played both for untold amount of hours. Holding out hope for a IB3 though I feel like if it would ever come it'd be an amalgamation of traditional "IB" gameplay and what Dungeons was attempting to do.

Goddamn, I got addicted to that Scallywags game. I'm on my 5th character and I finally have made some serious progress, although she's on only one heart.

So downgrading to iOS6 WOULD FIX the problem? I might not do that, just want to know that that is in fact the issue.

3-4 Hours into XCom and loving it, lost one team of soldiers which not going to lie was completely gutting. Just after I started getting used to them. Oh and a changed one of my soldiers race to black and he died in the next mission, typical xD.

Game runs so well on my iPad 4.

After i've had my fill with this, will move onto Knights of the Old Rep.

I read that you can't change the color of your squad's armor in the iOS version of XCom. Preorder cancelled.

Ravenmark:Mercenaries seems really promising.
First 15 minutes are awesome.
Planning to spend the night on this.

Has anyone picked up Home? Not sure if I should get it for PC or IOS

I played it last year on PC and liked it. It's short but meant to be played numerous times to understand the story. It's a creepy adventure game that is focused on exploration and item gathering with, if I'm remembering right, a few puzzles here and there.

Sadly, yes. You also don't have as many extra armor/hair options as on consoles. :( really a bummer as I use colors to help differentiate my soldiers.

It's still a hell of a game, though. Game is definitely rougher looking than consoles, both in textures and frame rate dips, but the core gameplay adapts really well to iOS. My main problem with playing on iPhone is that the zoom levels aren't great; there are two preset zoom levels, and I want some kind of happy medium between them.
