GB/GBC/GBA Collecting Thread

Yea, the GBA was a weird time for Mario platformers. While other companies, and even nintendo, were pumping out new and unique games, they were simply content to just release ports. That's why the release of NSMB DS was such a big deal at the time, because it had been such a long time since a new 2D Mario platformer.
This is true, but there should have been one on GBA first! Waiting all the way until the DS was annoying. And making things worse, after that one (decently good, but quite short) near-launch Wario Land 4 game, that series went away too.

What was an even more baffling decision, IMO, was the order that they released them on the GBA. They decided to release SMB2 US first, which to most, is the weakest of the series. It has a special charm, but if it were me, I would have released SMW or SMB3 first.

But, I really dislike the ports, simply because of how they added voices. Hearing mario saying "Just what I needed!" every time you get a mushroom is annoying to the point that I'd rather play it elsewhere.
Uh, they obviously did SMB2 because SMB Deluxe for GBC had included SMB and SMB For Super Players (most of Mario 2 Japan), so naturally next comes Mario 2 (US). I know that after that they went out of order, but for the first one they did it right. Also, it's a great game. I've always loved it. I didn't mind that re-release, though it was disappointing as I said -- I wanted SMB Deluxe-like feature sets, but none of the Mario Advance games came even close to that. That's one reason why I didn't buy any of them new, and still the only one I have is a Japanese copy of the first Super Mario Advance (that I found cheap locally).

How much do you guys think a mint Guru Logic Champ for GBA is worth? I'm lucky enough to have a few now...

Dunno, but I love that game and would love to own a copy to play and love and hold...how much would be reasonable for you to part with one at? :p

I've have seen loose copies of it for $9.99 on Amazon.jp in the past...

I hadn't really considered SMB2 being released because of Deluxe, but I suppose that's probably true.

Yeah, I didn't buy any of the Mario Advance games during the system's life. Barely-altered ports? Forget it, I want to get new games. I did get, and love, Super Mario Bros. Deluxe for the GBC, but that had lots of new content. The only port I bought for GBA was the NES Classics Zelda 1.

Well, and the bigger problem was that the additions they did make were kind of stupid. Yoshi's Island got some mediocre new levels at the expense of the graphics and music. Super Mario Advance introduced some insanely annoying voices into the game, which nobody can possibly argue added to the experience. Super Mario Advance 4 added... e-reader support. The fuck, Ninty?

It's like why the DS started with remakes of Final Fantasy III and Dragon Quest IV -- FF 1-2 and DQ 1-3 had gotten GBC ports. Okay, the GBA had gotten FF 4-6, but they'd skipped 3, so they went back and filled it in... and GBA hadn't gotten new DQ ports, so they picked up where they had left off.

They also added some red coins to find or something, right? Also Mario Advance 1 has those giant enemies and powerups. But yeah, not much.

But no, I think the biggest problem was that they'd given up on the idea of making more ambitious ports, as Mario Deluxe had been.

That dpad on the clone gbc looks pretty rough...how does it feel?

I'll be honest, it's not very good. Its one of those dpads, where if you press it in, it activates all 4 directions at once. Which can be amusing at times, but its not ideal.

All nintendo dpads have a center pivot point... and this one does too, however the pivot is too short and can't pivot. I fixed this by using a genuine gbc dpad that I salvage from a broken system, and now it works perfect.

Sorry to bump the thread with more useless questions, but I'm trying to figure out exactly what stuff I wanna dive into when I get this thing. I have a new copy of Mario & Luigi that I bought from a friend for like $5 and never opened. How's that game?

I also have a copy of Final Fantasy Tactics Advance I bought from a Circuit City clearance and never opened... I've heard that game's some kinda kiddie shit, but I dunno... is it worth bothering with, or should I horde my copy until it's worth mad skrilla?

And then... Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap. I only played part of it and was kinda blase about it... should I go back to it, or is it a mediocre entry in the series?

All three of those games are considered to be excellent and among the best in the GBA library, can't go wrong with any of them.

They're not the best games ever (I dislike Minish Cap's graphical style and super-low difficulty and small world, Mario & Luigi's graphics and think its game[play is nowhere near as good as the original two Paper Mario games, and also dislike FFTA's story and find its gameplay only okay), but all three are decently good titles well worth playing.

I got my Purple SP in the mail a couple days ago, and it's nice a clean, with no dust behind the screen and all that. Only problem is the battery won't hold a charge. It works fine when plugged in, but it dies within 30 mins when I'm out and about. Also the charging light doesn't light up. I contacted the seller for a replacement, I'll keep you guys updated about what follows.

UPDATE: I got a USB power cable (I charge everything via USB anyway, to avoid voltage differences), and it charges and works perfectly. Looks like the charger that came along with it was a dud. I'm pretty happy with it, and he was pretty keen on making sure I was happy with what I got.

That cassette case idea is nifty. Plus there are kinds of cassette case containers (what else to call them?) to further organize a collection. The only downside I can see is no room for the manual.

I'm guessing you would do that for your loose carts

Oh man, that's a fantastic idea! I have a heap of loose carts, so that would work perfectly.
Though I imagine that printing the covers for them would take a bit of effort, adjusting the contents to fit the taller form factor rather than the more square originals.

[EDIT]
Oh, I read the link, and he's got a template that works nicely. If I can find a whole heap of old cassette covers in good nick, I might just do this myself!

So much easier to find GBA games than DS games. I think gamers had significanlty better tastes during the GBA's lifetime.

I just found Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town on Craigslist, which is a fairly tough game to find.

Meanwhile, I can barely even find bad DS games. I've rarely seen both Legend of Zeldas and the NSMB, all three are considered to be fairly weak parts of their respective series. My point is, all three of those games sold very well, but I haven't seen any of them on Craigslist.

Oh, hey, I just saw the question about Yoshi's Island DS. It was like a week ago, but what hasn't changed in the last week is that that game is a goddamn piece of fucking shit, and the people who made it should be rounded up, shot, and their blood should be used to scrawl a message on the walls of Nintendo HQ, saying "if you ever pull this shit again, you will suffer the same fate." And if Nintendo were to allow this sort of atrocity to happen again with the new Yoshi games, they deserve whatever they get. It is a hate crime against mankind, and in thousands of years when aliens discover our planet, they will find this game and have all the justification they need to destroy every last one of us.

I give it a 5.5/10.

So tried to have faith in used GBA carts and bought Circle of the Moon for cheap from Amazon. It actually seems legit (has the numbers stamped on the front of the cart with the right art). Took a little cleaning since it kept glitching out (never had that happen to me with a GBA game) but seems ok so far. I'll try to post a shot later to get other opinions though...i'm still paranoid lol.

A little out of shape, but legit right?

I've got a copy laying around somewhere but how does this hold up to other Metroidvanias? I'm playing SOTN at the moment (like 186% so almost finished) and am thinking about what to move on to next (already played AoS).

CotM is not as good as SotN (or AoS, if you want to compare it to another Castleroid on the GBA), but it's definitely a better challenge. Great soundtrack in the game too, but it's mostly arrangements of previous Castlevania Music.

I like it a hell of a lot more than HoD.

It has nothing to do with the placement of the circles.

One of the circuit boards has Nintendo printed on it, one doesn't.

I always thought that screenshot was demonstrating both: How the pin connections are all lined up properly at the beginning of the connection leads, while the fake ones are all over the place, plus the fact that the fake ones don't have Nintendo on the board.

Actually, the "circles" are called vias, and they are just as important as the nintendo text. No official nintendo cartdridge is going to have any vias on the cartridge pin connector. Nearly all fakes I've seen, have them.

Heh didnt notice that at first glance. Looking at those fake Pokemon carts I ran into awhile back, they've even got Nintendo printed on the inside, but the labels are obviously fake and the font for the Nintendo is too skinny. That and vias all over the place.

I've decided to pick up some Pokemon games and as a result I fell back in love with my old GBA SP.
I've never gave him enough love and barely had games for it, but it's time to fix that.

It's screen is a bit damaged, and the back side of it is full of scratches, so I thought about buying a replacement shell like this one:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Housing...g_Replacement_Parts_Tools&hash=item5d3d7114e3
It's rather cheap... Does anyone have experience with those? Is is hard to install the new shell (which includes a screen protector btw), does it look as good as the original one?
Also if anyone knows a cheaper place to buy them I'd appreciate it. They were much cheaper on DX.com once, but it's out of stock there now.

Wario Land 2

Ok, so this is one of those GameBoy Color games that started off as a regular GameBoy game, I think? In any case it kind of shows in the graphics. They're not as nice as Wario Land 3, which is easily one of the best looking GBC games out there.

Anyway, this was the first game in the series where (unlike Wario Land 1 and Wario Land VB) you don't wear different hats to get abilities. In this game, the enemies affect Wario in different ways: if you catch on fire, you'll destroy fire blocks, if you eat a caker's cake you become fat and heavy, if you touch a zombie you'll fall through floors, etc.. It's much more interesting than the hat system which feels too much like Mario. You also can't die - you lose coins instead of taking damage, and bosses will throw you out of the boss room so you can try them repeatedly.

Each level contains a secret treasure room. You have to play a mini-game to open the chest, and each time you play it costs you coins that you've collected in the level. The mini-game is always the same, and it's basically an eye reflex test where you're shown a portrait. You then get about a second or two to see 8 portraits and have to match the one that is shown. It can be difficult to catch it in time.

Then at the end of each stage you can earn a puzzle piece. This also requires money and plays like a mini-game where you are shown a 9-piece puzzle of a number between 0-9. The more pieces you choose to show the more money it costs. Both of these mini-games get a bit tiresome after awhile, and it's unfortunate they didn't mix things up more.

The game is linear at first - you play through 25 of the 50 levels and then you can go back and find alternate paths that open an additional 25 stages, including some new bosses. I found it became a bit exhausting to do this, and it's not as fun as exploring the world map in the other games, but in the end I did complete the game 100%.

Unfortunately the alternate endings aren't very good, and the amount of money you have when you beat the game doesn't change anything. I liked how in the first Wario Land, the castle you end up with changes based on how many coins you had collected, but there's nothing like that here. No real reward for getting all the treasures, either but a different splash screen after the ending.

It's not a bad game, and it gets points for introducing so many ideas that would become standard in the series, but I would only recommend it to die-hard Wario fans.

Wario Land 3

What a huge difference from Wario Land 2 to 3! It builds on the premise of enemies affecting Wario in different ways, but it also uses the GameBoy Color's specs much better. This game really looks closer to a 16-bit game than an 8-bit game because there are so many more colors available than the NES.

Anyway, this time the world map returns and there are 25 stages. Wario starts off with limited abilities that must be earned by collecting treasures, so you can't break certain blocks or perform moves like the ground pound straight away. There are 4 treasure chests in each stage, locked with a key of corresponding color. Some treasures will open new stages on the world map or will open pathways to previously blocked treasure chests, plus as you unlock new abilities you'll want to revisit stages several times over the course of the game.

You can beat the game with only about 60 treasures but it's worthwhile to get all 100 because the levels are well designed. The mini-game this time around is a side-scrolling golf game where you smash an enemy over the course (which may have hazards like water, sand bars, or out-of-bounds sections) into the hole. It costs coins to play and opens a gate, which is a requirement to reach certain chests. It's more fun than the ones in Wario Land 2 but again there is a lack of diversity. There are also 8 special coins in each stage, but they don't count for anything special unless you collect all 8 in one go, which is impossible to do until you've unlocked everything - and the reward for doing it is just more of the Golf mini game.

Again, it's a bit disappointing there doesn't seem to be alternate endings but that's not a big deal in this case. In my opinion the GameBoy Color didn't get that many great games but Wario Land 3 is definitely worth picking up. It's not as good as Wario Land 4 or Wario Land: Shake it but it is close behind those and I think if you like puzzle-platformers there is a lot of fun to be had with it. These two games were sitting in my backlog for years and I'm glad I finally cleared them.

Picked up Duck Tales and Mystic Quest (FF Adventure) at a local gamestore today. Duck Tales didn't survive the translation from the NES to GB very well, the sound is AWFUL. Always wanted to go back and play FFA, though.

Beefing up my collection, trying to get the purple version of each handheld. Anyone have a good lead on where to get a Japanese purple Game Boy Micro without paying $Texas for it?

ArcadeShock was clearing out all colors of their import Micros last December for $99, but sadly they're long gone.
The next cheapest alternative is probably getting a second-hard one from Yahoo Japan Auctions. Even after using a forwarding service it still should undercut eBay reseller pricing.

Nice to see some Gameboy love :)

If you are interested, I made a thread with a list of the coolest GBA games a while ago here at GAF:
Official Gameboy Advance Software Thread of Micro Pleasures for Great Pocket Justice.

Turbo is an enhanced version of GBW with 50 new levels I think. It doesn't have a weird intro though. But it has this awesome box/metal tin:
gameboy_wars_turbo_shop.jpg

Apparently there are 9 games from Hudson with that type of tin can box.

Yup, I love those boxes. I just have Bomberman 3 for Gameboy:

Too bad the US version didn't get the 20th Anniversary Mario logo on the back.

I bring it along with me to test games I pick up on Craigslist and people are always surprised to see the Micro. Especially people who were big fans of GBA who are just selling their games for quick money, or they lost interest.
