Media Create Sales: Week 25, 2013 (Jun 17 - Jun 23)

What's the deal with the prices, why are all the PSV and PSP games more expensive than TLOU?

As far as I know, game pricing is more variable in Japan. Publishers individually choose the best price point for their games instead of releasing 90% of the stuff at 60$.

Where are you getting these numbers from and how up to date are they? Uncharted 3 will probably break 200K when combined with the best release which I assume will be releasing later this year.

TLOU opening is more impressive than Uncharted 3 because Uncharted 3 had one more day of sale (Uncharted 3 released 11/02, week ended 11/06), TLOU is a new IP, Uncharted 3 released in the Fall. Let's hope TLOU hold is better than U3 though but I doubt it will be.

Wii U... :-(

Pie and Beans

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
Famitsu paints a picture that the WiiU is absolutely terminal at this point. Its not got that extended audience sell, it wont have the hardcore appeal PS3/PS4 lives/will live shakily on with, and its not a handheld which is what Vita's saving grace is I guess.

When Pikmin comes out and doesnt do much of anything, its all the way into December for any truly fruitful sales off the back of a Mario and thats just too long for the thing to be on the market and be deemed an absolute failure by every consumer. That stink wont ever go away.

You could absolutely be right, but this strikes me as a bit too speculative.

From GEIMIN.NET. The figures I posted are updated as of December 30, 2012 (Media Create sales: 2012 Top 1000).

Its a self fulfilling prophecy though. Not only do consumers see WiiU lose more and more retail space and hear the "lol fail" rumblings and feel no great desire or excitement for the product, but in turn developers watch the thing post an entire year of market sales that are beyond embarrassing and lead them to not want to touch it. By December, Mario manages to shift.... however many units and maybe then other devs jump on board which gives us games in what... 2015/16?

Theres frankly no way out of this cycle.

ok- my real quibble is you reducing the lineup in Japan to Mario in December. They actually have a lot of 1st party stuff lined up. Now, whether those can spur real momentum is another question..

Had no idea TLoU would sell like this in Japan. It'll probably have a massive 70%+ drop-off next week but still, over 100k in its debut week. Guess I'm out of the loop.

Wii U 5.3k on MC and 4.3k on Famitsu. Average of 4.8k, sub 5k. That's just horrific.

Famitsu Sales: Week 25, 2013 (Jun 17 - Jun 23)

| WIU | 4.236

According to Famitsu's tracking, that's an all-time low for the system.

I really hope the system can rise above 10K sales (Famitsu) before the holiday season.

It'd be a tragedy if Pikmin 3 / New Super Luigi U / Ryu ga Gotoku 1&2 HD can't jumpstart the system to non-abysmal levels.

Is the Vita bump related to any new colours being offered?

I though I saw an ad floating around here for an orange version being released in Japan.

Say things dont pick up that much even when games are released could Nintendo pull the plug in 12 - 18 months?

If Mario Kart 8 + Smash Bros. U + Mario 3D World + DK: Tropical Freeze + Wii Fit U + Wii Party U + Zelda U truly cannot elevate the platform to at least GameCube levels, I don't think Nintendo will have a choice.

Those are Nintendo's strongest console IPs. That said, we won't see any Wii U cancellation before 2015...when the full spectrum of Nintendo's strongest IPs are given a chance to rejuvenate the console.

Probably the next DQ remake will be announced for this Holiday season, too.

These are the first ones I remember.

Probably seems to be a bit optimistic. Is there anything left they could remake bar Dragon Quest 8? DQ8 is a PS2 game, so there would not be much room for improvement...

I imagine once games like Pikmin 3, Smash Bros., etc. start releasing for it, it will sell well but until then, Wii U is more dead than the Vita. :(

Sales are bound to pick up, but it remains to be seen to what degree. Obviously the relative success or failure of the PS4 will have an impact. It'll be an exciting christmas!

Oh come on

We had the same shit with the Vita, grow some thicker skin brother Dave
Huh? I was just saying it's crazy that we've gone from expectations of domination to abject failure. Just shows that nothing can be taken for granted in the wild world of sales.

Well Famitsu scores are ridiculous themselves. If it isn't a 36 or higher, someone didn't give Famitsu enough money or something. The scores used to mean something.

Why was the 3DS selling like hot cakes last year but not this?

There is almost a 50% drop YOY.

9/8/8/9 is a mediocre review? Not sure what you are referring to.
Toukiden (PSV) – 9/8/8/9 [34/40]

I just don't consider it up to Famitsu standards. But we all know how much of a sell-out they are so i guess we shouldn't trust their score.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!

Dragon Quest Monsters 2.

I doubt it. They'll wring every ounce of profitability they can out of it, and let 3DS sustain them in the market, with the profits for the first party titles they do get out helping it along. Similar angle to the one they used for Gamecube/GBA.

Everything moved out of summer to avoid Mon Hun. Mon Hun got delayed. There's a vacuum in the 3DS schedule as a result.

What software there has been is doing well, though.

Jan numbers will be fun, but Feb might be orgasmic.

ps4 can't come soon enough. 3ds is the new psp, which was the new ds, which was the new ps2.

I think the PS4 will struggle out of the gates in JP. There's NOTHING announced for it at launch that will make people wanna buy it. FFXV, MGSV are both 2014, KH3 is 2015 at the earliest, all are multiplatform titles with MGSV also being on PS3. GT6, LR, DS2 are for PS3. No niche or mid sized games announced for PS4. Dark Souls 2 and GT6 are rumored to be cross gen like MGSV, but that runs into the same problem the vita has with a lot of mp titles.

Right now, there's no PS4 exclusive game that appeals to the Japanese audience, all games that appeal to them are mp titles. There are no games announced at launch that appeal to the JP audience, all games that appeal to them are 2014 and beyond titles.

I think Sony is doing well by delaying the launch of the PS4 in Japan, to be honest.

I think when they actually start releasing games at a steadier pace the baseline may be raised to something like 10k before the holiday season which is better than now but is still terrible. I'm curious what their release schedule is for 2014. They have Mario Kart, Yoshis Yarn, X, Bayo 2, Wii Fit and Smash. If they could get a steady release lineup after Mario for the holidays they could make some strides to improving the systems outlook. Granted it will only be improving it from colossal disaster to a huge dissapointment.

All charts launch-aligned. All data from Famitsu.
Weekly numbers presented in logarithmic base 1,000 for clarity. In that case, zero units are represented by one unit.

Note, since this draws only from the top 30 it does not represent smaller titles.
e.g., software sales of zero are assumed if the console has no games in the top 30.

Tally of the number of titles for that platform in the top 30 for each week.
Certain weeks may have titles that aren't represented. These are the PS3's 7th and 25th, and the Wii's 4th and 23rd.

Feel free to criticize or point out mistakes.

I think they both have had 3 so far - gut feeling. Maybe the Wii-U will end up with 2 more in the following weeks.

Wii U at risk of falling below the PSP, come the hell on Nintendo put something out there even if you just have to throw up-rendered collections for now until you can get the gates open. You have THE library to tap into, not even tapping into close partners.
USE it.
