The 8GB announcement took virtually everybody by surprise.

So, it's no stretch to assume virtually all games shown in playable form were using 4GB as the target.

Yes. I think you are right. The mind boggles thinking about games that are to come at the end of PS4 lifetime. We will marvel at the graphics and laugh at how basic the launch games looked.

I think the mods should change the title so it says "PS4: The Dark Sorcerer - Quantic Dream's Full Tech Demo video released.

With "full tech demo released" in the title it makes it sound like they released the code for it to run on systems (which don't exist yet.. heh)

Some interesting notes:

  • Running at 1080p @ 30 FPS, textures are native to 1080p resolution, framerate was not optimized
  • 1st generation of QD's PS4 development cycle
  • They did not use PS4 tools, they used their PS3 development pipelines (same as Beyond) and just used high fidelity assets
  • Only 4GB of dat GDDR5 is being used
  • The set is 1 million polygons
  • The lighting is dynamic as is the shift between the film lighting and the studio lighting, which they are able to shift back and forth within 1 single frame

At the end they move the camera around the set and change between the two different lighting situation. Really impressive.

So I ended Day2 watching the extended Demo of this in Sonys booth. The buzz was non existant, the line was small, and I was curious. Before getting things going the Quantic Dream dev went on and on how there are no tricks, this is running in engine in 3D realtime with no video overlays. I was still quite skeptical. They showed everything from the press conference and then the demo went on for another five minutes. Another actor shows up in a devil costume, many more goblins appear. I kept thinking to myself this just can be. The character in the devil outfit looks absolutely real. I admit I was #TeamCG so I have been burned before. And this is supposedly real time no less. When it was over. He started to describe how many polys there were per character. And how many shaders. Blah blah. But then he started to change the lighting with the controller. To move the camera around in full 3D. Zoom in and out to see amazing details like the characters eyes. He started turning shaders on and off. Then he went into wireframe mode to show off the models. He had them do different animations like pushups to show off the cloth simulations for the clothes and hair. Because we were the last show of the day he had plenty of time to go through it in detail.

I could not compute. It was real. This is the single most impressive realtime 3D graphics demo I have ever seen in my life. I have been to many E3's and even SIGGRAPH. Never has my jaw hit the floor so hard. I put my face right up to the huge hidef tv screen to look more closely at the end. Still looked real. There can be no debate here people. #TEAMCG is happening and in real time on PS4. And it is not Kojima that is delivering. It is Quantic dream. This really deserves alot more attention than it is getting. Especially after what happened with the TeamCG vs TeamReal debate. If you are at E3, you must goto the Sony booth and wait in line for the Quantic Dream demo to see it for yourself. I asked them to release the demo on PSN store when PS4 comes out. The last argument is that this is just a demo, and what can the game look like. They were very confident that the game will look like this or better. The Quantic Dream guy listed how they made this in 6 months using tools from the Beyond pipeline. And that it was not even using the full memory of PS4. He also pointed to their pedigree, and I have to admit, Beyond looks better than many next gen games at E3.

#TEAMCG has been vindicated! Discuss.

Man, this is spectacular stuff...

But but pc users tell me ps4 just use a notebook processor... seriously, this just... wow. I can't imagine what ND will do on ps4.

Can't wait to be playing this and my parents will walk in and ask me "what movie are you watching?" Me: "It's not a movie, it's a game." 0_O

great things to come. great things indeed.

I'm not sure what I'm looking at. Are the characters controllable? or is it just a CGI video where you can move the camera around as much as you like?
Reading what people have had to say about how powerful the PS4 is on here, I thought it was just around mid-level PC in terms of power. But no PC game has graphics in-game that even come close to this, so it has to be lies, doesn't it?

Here's the kicker, QD isn't even the most talented studio in terms of tech from Sony's side.

I disagree. Even Heavy Rain was top looking PS3 game.

They have big boost because they can work on closed locations unlike many other games. That alone will give you better effect than many Sony studios will achieve.

It's like GT and Forza games their specific gamedesign allow them to be simply better looking than any FPS or any other gengre.

Technically yes it is true but game design is much more important to final look than tech used. It is also same reason why open world games always will look worse than any other type of game.

I'm that sure light system or facial animation are just artistic matter. Technically QD has done a lot of interesting things.

I don't see anything even close to Beyond on ps3 to be honest. Graphically it's just insane for the ps3 hardware

Thats not really a game like Uncharted or Infamous or Killzone
QD games are developed as movies with interactive parts that leads you into the QTE experiences.

Seriously this QTE thing is getting old. QTE or nothing like control system in Heavy Rain.

Big reason why people love QTE in God of War and hate them everywhere else is how they are used. God of War QTE system gives you meaningful actions that often correspond to what you character is doing in comparison to how you use controls. Wit other games it is mostly just press A to awesome like Ryse shitty QTEs.
Heavy Rain and even Fahrenheit belongs to entirely different QTE system than even GoW.
When you open fridge in Heavy Rain your move emulate that of opening actual fridge. Sure it is hard at start but later it is predictable to point where you do not think about how you are doing it.
What this system shares between those games is on screen icons. How it is completed and used is entirely different thing and i hate when someone uses " QTE fest" without actually trying to understand mechanics used in first place.

This is true, but I think the more open areas look pretty good as well. Of course this is still tiny compared to The Last of Us or Uncharted in terms of level size, but they definitely can make things look pretty beyond a single room or house :p

Beyond is interesting, because it has some pretty big areas you can freely explore. For example the horse section is apparently completely open and player controllable:

For the record, this is Quantic Dream first PS3 demo:

And their latest game:

Imagine what the PS4 will do in 5 years oO

I remember when people were doubting they could pull that off too... Seems like people would learn their lesson by now. Doubting the technical ability of Naughty Dog, Sony Santa Monica, and Quantic Dream are sucker's bets.

Now please show us in-game shots where the gamer is in complete control. There is a stark contrast to those screens and actual gameplay.

Note that the Beyond screenshots are not direct feed, taken from YouTube compressed ingame footage. Heavy Rain is direct feed. Also keep in mind that Beyond just entered Beta and all the screenshots are from the alpha version.

That being said, the screenshot of Beyond from Metalmurphy is definitely a bullshot. The game uses the same character models, but the display resolution is not that high.

Who are the voice actors in this? The sorcerer is obviously Patrick Stewart, but who are the other two guys?

Okay. I didn't catch that. Thanks for the info.
The director is David Gasman, who plays a role in every Quantic Dream game since 1999. Can do various accents. Also voices Rayman.

The Demon is modelled after and played by Christian Erickson, who also plays a part in every game they make. He actually was the host in MegaRace, Lance Boyle:

Cool, apparently Christian Erickson also voiced a character in one of my favorite games, Dark Messiah of Might and Magic (yes, I liked it).

The sorcerer even introduces himself in the tech-demo, it's not Patrick Stewart, it's David Gant

The goblin is Carl Payne of Martin fame.

Director, and the demon? Don't know.

The guy who played the demon Christian Erickson has been in a lot of games even heavy rain

The Inside Track
Gamersyde is still looking for it apparently. Quantic Dream is going to release making of material soon, I expect a direct feed version along with it.

Our PR contact at Sony was surprised it wasn't released like the other videos, but so far it doesn't look like there is any plan to do anything but that youtube version.

You are from Gamersyde aren't you? Damnit! They even uploaded the Kara tech demo to the PSN Store eventually, so I'm staying hopeful...
