Minor Wii U system update now live.

Thank you for your contribution. Please contribute again in the future.

It's true though. Nintendo had more hubris coming off of Wii than Sony did with PlayStation 2.

They need a kick in the butt to get things going so that things are at least like the Wii generation.

This may be the issue. I haven't updated yet so I don't know if they've fixed it but previously I saw a marked difference if I let the main menu load for about 20 seconds or so. If I would turn my system on and leave it to grab a drink or something, by the time I got back, whatever I selected would load almost immediately. However, if I clicked on something the second the icon popped up after turning on the system, it'd "stall" or something while the rest of the OS loaded until finally it got to the game and moved forward. It sounds a lot like what's happening with you too. Test it out, try letting the OS load for about 30 seconds and then load a game.

I really hope they fix that soon because it is indeed incredibly annoying. I've gone almost purely digital so I have a ton of stuff on my dashboard as well.

You're definitely on to something. If I let the thing sit for a few minutes, the load times drop to 10-12 seconds. There must be some pre-loading going on. And yeah, I know exactly what you mean by "stall". The splash screen often doesn't come up right away; the system appears to be locked for a few seconds first. If I let it "idle" first, that doesn't seem to happen.

It's true though. Nintendo had more hubris coming off of Wii than Sony did with PlayStation 2.
Whoa whoa whoa, let's not go that far. Sony was completely insufferable back then. With Nintendo there were no "people will get a second job to buy a Wii U" or "xbox 360 = xbox 1.5" comments. Nintendo just completely overestimated the appeal of the Wii U. It might be hubris but I think it's probably more them being completely oblivious to the non-popularity of the Wii in its last two years.

Of course now Sony is amazing and I hope Nintendo takes a lot of cues from them. I just hope they keep online free again next gen.

The only way to win is to have software that works. Sony patches everything too often, Nintendo patches too infrequently.. maybe the software company got it right.

I personally haven't had any lockup problems with the OS. Only time my U locked up was while playing that stupid indie bird game demo.

Delaying an update is not a good sign either... probably the first time Nintendo doesn't master its own hardware. Maybe they just can't achieve greater UI speed and it will take them 2 years to start over a whole new dashboard!

You're welcome. I have many more to make.

Until Nintendo get their heads out of their arses, and wash off some of the thickly spread arrogance that coats every single aspect of their decision making, I hope they suffer utter and complete failure to the point of relegation to nothing more than a freak-show no-one takes seriously anymore. They won't of course. They will double down on their franchises, churn out cheap cash-ins, and trickle out VC games while the eShop is barren to try and keep their fans just hanging on enough for their next franchise. Meanwhile those who wanted more than a Mario and Zelda machine are screwed.

Disclaimer: I am not only a gamer and Wii U owner, but a Nintendo investor and I am fucking pissed off no matter what hat I have on.

Got the update, netflix seems to load faster (that pause that used to happen between main menu screen and red netflix screen didn't happen).

I will try out some games and see if it is the same.

The big update is probably needed for some of the Wii Fit U features. When this got delayed I already had a feeling the summer update would be as well.

I didn't know you were a Wii Fit fan.

Seems like it is the same for the games, it doesn't do the pause thing for me anymore.

Now the real test begins in the coming days, to see if the crashes are gone.

They can't even get OS updates out in a timely manner, leaving it to the last possible moment. Nintendo are truly acting like newcomers to the software industry.

They have become a well deserved joke. I wish all manner of failure for them this gen because it's possibly the only thing that would get them to sort themselves out.

Agree 100%.

I use to be a big Nintendo fan but the past two generations have destoryed a good 20 years of brand loyalty i've felt towards them. Since Iwata came in as CEO i've found the company has become incredibly stagnant, reactive, risk adverse, predictable, and worse of all completely ignorant of their own failings and errors.

My hope now is that Nintendo absolutely bomb and burn, and hard. I'm talking Wii U fails so fucking badly it is indeed another Dreamcast/Saturn. It seems to me Nintendo are so ignorant and arrogant only a failure on this sort of magnetude would result in them pulling their heads out of the sand and waking up to reality.

I can't even stand listening to Iwata anymore. He's full of shit.

Considering I haven't even turned on my Wii U since i beat Lego City Undercover in March, I don't really care about the lack of an update thus far, but it does suck they couldn't get it out before Pikmin 3 and Wonderful 101.

What the fuck?! The Summer update that I have no details about and I already expected to come in September might actually come in September or a few weeks after?! /facepalm Fucking Nintendo it's [insert year here]! I am fuming! Livid!

They will use Wonderful 101 in a video to demonstrate how faster it is to boot the game after the update. "Advertising problem solved, Kamiya" - Iwata (laughs)

There is however a thin line between a big shake-up to turn around, and the complete failure of a company.

The 'summer' update better fix pro controller support for all games.

I agree that Nintendo as a business seems to lag very far behind others. But I'm not sure if you can blame Iwata. How did Nintendo handle these kind of things during the NES, SNES, N64 days?

A lot of people don't realize that programming, especially optimization, is really fucking difficult. You can't just flip a switch.

I think also it's good for us to add more things to summer update.

+Print screen and app for photo , add your photo to miiverse any time.

The 'summer' update will probably also establish this Nintendo Web Framework thing.

@guek Thanks, tried it now. Clicking at another icon at startup I had to wait a little. Not 20 seconds though, about 3-4.

Wow, a potentially system breaking software update gets a minor delay, and all the sourness starts to flow,

Dammit, Nintendo, you should have known! You can't be innovative and successful at the same time without appealing the particular and all important tastes of the "hardcorz gamers". You left out the brown and the shoe-in multiplayer, now you must suffer.

So who's making the OT for the summer update then? The spring update thread was so much fun lol

I just want to be able to turn the gamepad screen off when I'm in playing on my TV in a dark room.

Press home button and controller settings and you can turn it off

The Wii U OS is just horribly slow and prone to lock-ups. This update is desperately needed.
Well then wouldn't you rather they take the time to actually make sure it works rather than rushing something out? All they said before was "Summer" - early October is pushing that a little but not by much.

Oh that's nice. I honestly thought it was a permanent concession to make the OS load faster. Like they were giving us control earlier in the OS loading process then actual completion in order to say they speed up OS load times which hardware limitations make impossible to go any faster.

Glad to see that's not the case.

We definitely need another OT. Loads of fun hyping a update! lol

Not really, the first update fixed the most important speeds.

My system doesn't lock up much anymore at all either.

It's not desperately needed, games are.

I still want the update even though no one even knows what it will be about but it's not some emergency.

Of course it's more than flipping a switch, but when they keep pushing deadlines they've set themselves, and sometimes outright missing them, I think it's fair for people to start asking questions. It's not like they released the Spring update last week and everyone suddenly grew impatient.
