Description
Peel back the masque, and look upon the face of terror.

An age of darkness has fallen as vampires rule over mankind, and only the half-vampire hunters can herald the dawn. You are the hunter, stalking your bloodthirsty prey to deliver humanity from the deathless clutches of tyranny. The hunt is on.

Come face-to-face with vampires as you star in this immersive action RPG. Take a photo or use an existing one to see yourself in action against the vampires, or mix and match facial features, hairstyles, and skin tones to create a character all your own. Connect online to recruit friendly faces to join you on the hunt.

The world of BLOODMASQUE comes alive as intuitive controls and dynamic combat highlight an audiovisual experience that will leave you breathless.

BACKSTORY
A dark night looms for mankind at the close of the nineteenth century in vampire-ruled Paris. You are a vampire hunter—half human, half vampire—stalking your prey in the streets, fighting insidious oppression, and thwarting the diabolical designs of the vampire regime.

FACE-TO-FACE WITH THE VAMPIRES
Use a photo of your face to create your virtual hunter. Add pleased and angry expressions to see your hunter react in cinematic scenes and combat. Privacy settings allow you to reveal your true face only to those you trust, or customize your character without using a photo with the game’s built-in face creator.

*Please refrain from using offensive or copyrighted images. For more information on prohibited materials, please refer to the User Agreement.

ANSWERING THE CALL
Recruit hunters other players have made as comrades in combat, and fight evil alongside the familiar faces of your friends.

SIMPLE CONTROLS, DYNAMIC IMPACT
BLOODMASQUE was designed with the touch screen in mind. Intuitive controls let you tap to attack and swipe to dodge as you savor the thrills of pulse-pounding vampire battles.

LAVISH PRODUCTION VALUES
BLOODMASQUE makes the most of iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch hardware to deliver the spectacular visuals and sublime orchestral arrangements players expect from Square Enix.

PLAYTHROUGH AND IN-APP PURCHASES
Skilled players should be able to play through the game’s main story in 12 hours or so (approximately 20 hours if played to full completion). The game is balanced so that in-app purchases are not required in order to experience the game’s full story. Challenging trials featuring vampires of fearsome power await beyond the ending.

BATTERY LIFE
BLOODMASQUE has been optimized for performance, and may consume battery life relatively quickly. Be sure your device is powered up prior to play.

SIZE
In order to deliver its signature high-end graphics, BLOODMASQUE requires 1.2 GB of free space on your device. Customers are encouraged to download via iTunes on a Mac or PC, or over Wi-Fi with the iOS device plugged into power.

SUPPORTED DEVICES
Compatible with iPhone 4S or above, iPod touch (5th generation) or above, and iPad 2 or above.
So, I'm actually really excited for this since it seems to be SE Japan's biggest mobile game that's not a port/remake of another in quite some time. The game's already out in some countries, so I'm really curious to know about impressions of people here, if anybody already bought it.

Yep.

Also, SE tax continues.

This seems pretty reasonable given the apparent quality of the game, which is... a lot higher than most other iOS games. The closest thing I can think of is Infinity Blade II and it launched at the same price.
It's also way cheaper than most other SE games on iOS.

Well, I finished watching the gameplay video posted by TA, though I skipped around a bit.
It looks very pretty, probably one of, if not the prettiest iOS game I've seen. Definitely up there with IB/IBII. The blob shadows really bother me though. The gameplay still looks like an IB clone with tapping instead of slashing, hopefully they later introduce something so it's not the same all the time. The social hooks seem a bit odd, but I'm glad they're not forcing you to put your face on it or linking your Facebook account.
I'm still really excited and I can't wait to play this on my iPad when it releases in a few hours.

I'm still irritated they canceled the console version of this. Missed opportunity.

I really feel unlike, I always want more Vampire Themed Games, and nowadays there are next to non, which really sucks, damn it Square, did you really need to turn this into a IOS game !!!, Sigh.

I was so excited when I saw this way back

Indeed, I quite liked that one shot and was curious to see what we were going to get.. It was the hat mostly. I just really liked that hat.

Looks like Square Enix is in financial trouble. They posted a 13.7 Billion loss (yen) last fiscal year which is about 136.9 million USD.

They expect to post a profit next year despite forecasting revenue to be below last year's, indicating that they will focus on mobile games which have a lower gross margin (They also specifically mention in their financial briefing that focusing on smartphone games will be part of their strategy to become profitable again).

They messed up the legend btw. MMOs should be light brown, not pink.

So in relation to the topic, Square Enix is getting "worse" because they're struggling financially and are choosing to make games for the most profitable platform at the moment (smart devices).

People here seem to refuse to accept that mobile gaming is a thing despite the lack of physical buttons, plus everyone hates SE so it's only natural for this to happen.

Anyway, the game's out in the majority of the world by now, has anyone bought it yet?
I feel like I'm the only person looking forward to this thing ):.

picked it up. Seems to be just infinity blade with a bit more story and other stuff. the photo face thing is obviously the highlight here, and i can see some of the gameplay getting repetitive, but it does seem like there is a bunch to do.

It is quite odd the controls are the opposite of infinity blade in which you tap to attack, swipe to evade.

There also doesn't seem to be nearly as complex parry system as IB.

Only early on though, vampires seem pretty simple in attacks.

Okay, I bought the game and I've played around for some hours.
The storyline is pretty simple, basically a "pure" vampire was born at some point and then they took over the world, treating humans as lesser beings. Then, after a while, a new breed was born, the half-humans/vampires, and they created a guild that's trying to liberate the world from vampire rule. There's a lot more to it but that's the gist of it.

There's a map of Paris from where you can select different spots to visit, and in these spots you can walk around and explore the city. In these explorable fields there's NPCs and items to be found, as you'd expect in an RPG, but they're also populated by other vampire hunters i.e. other people who're playing the game. If you approach them you can make a "bloodbond", which is basically adding them to your "friend list".
All that comes into play in the battle system, because when you go on a hunt/mission, you gotta make a party. The game retrieves a list of random players that are more or less around the same level as you are so you can bring them to battle with you, and if you bonded with someone there's a higher chance of them appearing in said list.
After choosing your partners you go and battle the vampires in a very Infinity Blade-y fashion (tap to attack, swipe to dodge, dodging at the right time leaves the enemy open to your attacks) where generally you start out fighting the vampire's human form, and after depleting their HP born, they're reborn as a stronger, evil-er true vampire, and after depleting that HP gauge you finally kill them by putting a stake through their heart. Before starting a mission you select which stake to use, it can be either a gold, silver or wood stake, and each one yields a better chance of getting rarer items from a mission. You have an infinite supply of wood stakes, which give you the worst items, but to get the silver and gold ones you gotta purchase them with either real money via IAP or the game's currency. The game also has a "clan" system, each clan is basically an element and exploiting the enemy's clan's weakness can help a lot during battles, luckily you can switch your own clan at will and level each up to be used when the time is right.
Battles are timed, generally you're given 3 minutes to complete it, and if time runs out you gotta either start the whole battle over and lose whatever items you earned, or add more time using premium items. The same thing happens if you die, you either lose all and start over the battle or you use a premium item to give you a second chance.

On Paris' map you can see which spots have quests for you to take, there's missions, which are the ones that advance the storyline, and hunts, which are just side quests. Generally the game flow goes like this:
finish story mission -> new items on the shop and new quests pop up -> choose to undertake story mission -> cutscenes -> vampire battle -> finish story mission
I'm not too far into the game but I already find it repetitive.
Graphically the game is gorgeous, playing on an iPad mini and it runs at anywhere from 30 to 60 FPS, it's not locked. I imagine on a new iPad or an iPhone 5 it must run at 60 FPS all the time.
The music is nice, and the art direction is superb; you can tell the dev team spent a lot of time trying to recreate that European city feel.

All in all, I'm a bit disappointed because of how repetitive the game is, and also the difficulty level is a bit odd, I seem to either have a lot of trouble with the enemies or kill them really easily, though that may also be because I'm not very good at these... action-y games. I'll continue playing and see how it turns out.

Fake edit: I forgot to mention some things that I thought were very peculiar:
-The game has a share button like the one you find on iOS or OSX 10.8 for everything, you can tweet a screenshot of the game at almost any point with it.
-The control method for fields is super odd, you can tap anywhere on the screen and move your finger around to change the camera's position, but to move you gotta tap and hold in the direction you wanna go, takes a bit to get used to.

Finally, screenshots!

Do note that while this game is $7, it is quite 'social game'y. It does seem to be connecting to the servers every time you do anything.

So yeah, if you have a wifi ipad, don't expect to play this on the road.

You can't blame people for wanting button controls.

Oh yeah, it seems you need an internet connection to play at all times. I just noticed that, weird.

Another thing I forgot to mention was that I tried putting my face in the game but it never worked out quite as well as the pictures in the app description.

So tempted to grab this. I reckon I'll crack before the night is over.

I love this part of the description, not sure why. It's frank and reasonable.

If people want to play this sort of thing on a handheld with buttons, they should buy a Vita. If that platform had a decent install base, you'd be seeing this ported.

Square just started supporting PS Mobile, so it could happen eventually.
