FRIDAYTON MK II: 5.5 million bears and salmon create unholy allliance to sack SONY HQ

That's... odd. How much did they cut the PS3 OS' footprint though? Maybe they can cut it down some by 2014?

I mean, 5.5 is still good, so I'm not devastated or anything, but I just find this confusing. Why so much?

On the bright side, at least it'll always be snappy and functional.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

Please tell me everything you know about OS design.

The 360's runs better than the PS3's (despite how ad infested it is) while having a smaller memory footprint. The Xbox One has 3 OSes to juggle and uses 3GB of its memory, but what the hell is demanding more than that on the PS4?

This throws games under the bus for, what? Better social media performance?

someone tweet yoshida....

1-2gb is fine...but 3.5gb? wtf.....consoles no need to run vm or some crap...

Where is 3.5 coming from anyways? 8-5.5= 2.5.
The game side has 4.5GB dedicated to it, while the OS has 3.5GB reserved. The OS side can be lowered down to 2.5GB so the gaming side can use 5.5GB, but doing so takes some work.

Sony's internal docs say that 4.5GB is the baseline amount of guaranteed memory available for game-makers (note the memory usage of the Killzone: Shadow Fall demo) and most likely what the lion's share of launch titles will be using. However, other sources close to Sony indicate that developers can request up to an additional gigabyte of "flexible memory", and use it to boost elements of the game - but only if the background OS can spare it. We're told that incorporating this isn't trivial, and it may well be that to begin with only first-party developers target its usage.

The one GB of wiggle room has to be for the 15 minutes of recording cache, doesn't it? So 2.5GB OS, and the. One for either the game to use or recording the game if the developers don't run the game in 'big' memory mode?
Dont think so. PS4 has a dedicated chip for this video recording and even if RAM is needed it would only be a small amount. If this article is true I wonder what cuases this increase in reserved RAM.

I think we can chalk this up to incomplete SDK docs and your typical media rush to publish the story ASAP. The reality is Microsoft has confrimed OS memory usage and Sony has not.

I lean towards it being hard to believe they double the memory to everyones surprise because developers asked them too. And then took up 3.5 of the memory and reserved it for the OS.

Also there has been countless qoutes from developers saying they dont even know how to fill 8 gigs of memory at this point and keep down loading times. Maybe the reality is most developers are using a lost less memory and sony is simply stating expect only 4.5 avaible for now.

The reserved amount will change as time goes by. They will optimize the OS to use less memory. It has been done before.

Like I stated earlier its not that easy.. The OS itself probably doesn't use more than 1GB of that memory, most of the memory reserved is for external Apps. The further down the road they get the harder it is to take away memory from a reserved space, since Developers are counting on that memory for their apps.

Can someone that is using a PC right now with a bunch of apps running and the OS state how much ram its using, total. For everything.

Im using 2.24gigs at work right now and thats with a fair bit of stuff running on it.

Cerny: System for developers

Adam: dev told us if you don't have 8GB of Ram you're dead.

Sony adds an additional 4GB of ram to equal 8GB's and

Gives devs 512mb of 4GBytes.

Turn the fucking thing into an app machine.

All that goodwill of its about games are out the window.

The definition of over reaction.

I'm not going to quote another post like this again.

And I bet the games are only using ~1GB of RAM?

Yeah, nothing to see here folks.

They are using the resources available, yes.

well if its true, its very suprising, since from the beginning PS 4 only had 2 gigs of DDR5. Even with 4 GB thats 75% of the OS and allmost 50% now, i knew that sony wanted a bit extra for the OS when they added the extra 4 GB, but i didnt think they would go over 2.

I'm not in the camp that thinks that Sony needs to chase OS feature-parity with MS to stay in the game this coming gen. Sure, fundamentally useful stuff like cross-game voice chat would be nice, but IMO MS tends to chase a lot of bloat and I'd rather Sony not follow suit. I think they're capable of matching the features worth matching with a much smaller footprint.

And besides, isn't part of the reason why MS has such a large RAM partition reserved for the OS to begin with partially because of Kinect 2.0? So why does Sony need to try and match those numbers when the PS Eye isn't part of the default kit?

Probably why 1GB is flexible in order to reduce the footprint.

The Crimson Kid

what are you waiting for
It's silly to treat this as fact yet. Not only is this an extremely bold claim from an anonymous source coming from a site that has a spotty record as of late with their next-gen spec reporting, the original tweet said they were delaying the article and getting a comment from Sony for the article, yet we have no comment from Sony.

It's telling that none of the other big gaming news sites are running with this.

If Sony really is going to comment soon, then wait for them to comment. Until then, chill the eff out.

Probably to make all the features they mentioned instantaneous. The Vita has a crazy fast OS, if they are aiming for that speed, then I can understand.

Seems okay to me.

Still much better RAM than the X1, this does not come close to levelling the playing field.

I have a feeling that the gap won't be that huge... but then again RAM was everything last gen.

Its official now. PS4 lost the race.
Xbox can use its infinite power of the cloud to increase all users ram by an infinite.

If true, this will not end well. That's pretty messed up.

Not surprised. It's in line with the Xbone's 3-ish gigs reserved for OS that we've heard (or heard rumors?) about

Yeah, I was coming in to say something similar about them reserving it for Cross-game chat and the like. Seems like a smart move in case they need the RAM increase in the OS later on.

Did you even read the article? The increase in RAM gave Sony the opportunity to improve the speed and features of the OS. "The console's leap from 4GB to 8GB has seemingly opened the door for Sony to be much more ambitious about what tasks the PlayStation 4 performs in the background and in parallel with gameplay."

What ?? Me ?? Read the article ?
lol, no. It was just a joke, i'm just enjoying the meltdowns.

People worry too much, it would still be a crazy amount of ram

nowhere near 3.5 gb. waiting for a confirmation or something.

I only doubt Eurogamer because they've been missing the mark when it comes to PS4, and if they miss this one then IMO their credibility really comes to question.

If Sony really is reserving 3.5 GB GDDR5 for OS purposes, then holy moly. Honestly it dampens my excitement for the console that is supposed to be all about games first, and very well might make me cancel my pre order and just wait it out. Differences between consoles hardware wise gets more nebulous, so I'll rather save the money and see what happens.

Note Killzone tech demo is on PS4@4GB...
