FRIDAYTON MK II: 5.5 million bears and salmon create unholy allliance to sack SONY HQ

If this is true. I am cancelling my pre-order.

Not joking.

the 8gb of gddr5 was the killer app. Now they threw it out for 15 min. of fucking constant youtube recordings.

Yeah, similar for me running skype, thunderbird, visual studio, firefox, phone app, winamp, and all my background stuff and that eats about 2.4. What the devil would they need 3.5 for?!

And I'm using 6GB, with 8.5GB cached and 1.5GB remaining.

What does that tell you, other than that posting your RAM usage is pointless?

This doesn't make any fucking sense at all, in any way shape or form.
I can understand Windows RT framework, Metro, Kinect motion and audio decoding data, and the all the TV stuff taking up 3 gigs, fine, but i can't imagine WTF could ever take up 3.5gigs in the PS4.

If this is revealed to be bullshit, then i'm up for banning DigitalFoundry, because this is about as inflammatory as it gets.

It's not that surprising to me. Sony needs that extra RAM for insurance purposes. This entire generation they've been trying to play catch up to Microsoft and the lack of extra RAM has held them back from reaching feature parity with things like cross-game chat. They don't want another repeat of that.

5.5GB is still plenty, especially for the first couple years of the systems life. We're still going to see some stunning games. And who knows, maybe Sony will end up opening up some of that reserved space for dev's in the future. It happened on the PS3 after all.

Weren't they waiting for an official statement before running this article based on what that Eurogamer Spain guy said yesterday? I'm confused.

Someone translate this now. This means something

343 is a multiple of 7. 7 is the initially rumored amount of RAM available for developers. Halo lore is filled with references to 7. Halo is a well known First Person Shooter IP. You know what's also a well known FPS IP?

HALF LIFE 3 COMING TO PS4.

This seems like a good thing, it will force lazy devs to optimize and create their code in an honorable manner (ie, to the metal) vs just pumping out big blobs of data all over the place, using excess energy and resources in the process.

I love you so much for this. You are the greatest of us all.

The KZ3 slides were realitive to the Feburary build, which was developed for a 4GB of RAM system in mind.

Of course not. The postmortem said clearly "Our aim for announcement event was to run on PS4 hardware, 1080p, solid 30FPS, no cheats", and the demo used up 1536MB system memory, 128MB system memory, and 3072MB video memory. So if that's true, they apparently were developing on a system with more than 4GB ram.

I want a powerful console that can be tapped to the metal.

Not a fucking sloppy media box, that cant do anything proper, beyond posting tossy viral messages on facebook.

i dont care.

I hope steam box or an other pc company puts together a sleek and powerful pc inabox and steam roll these suckers.

If im going to buy a jack of all trade. i might as well do it proper.

multitasking what? all the shit MS got bagged on from the get go. bank on it. sony will be playing catch up. sony 180 on game focused console turned media box.

Now you're just being dumb. The Vita's memory allows it to do multitasking functions. As for the rest of your post, you need to stop.

I can't even facepalm enough. Every Playstation has been a multimedia device. My ultimate PC is a multimedia device just like my PS3/360/3DS/Vita. I'm not getting in a war of words when you bring your D game and toss around terms like Sony 180. Go troll someone else.

Somebody page Jonathan Blow and ask him how is he using 5 GB already for his game when the 'for sure' limit is only 4.5? Is that extra .5 speculated flex ram he is using easy to access?

They said that unlike "no comment" they got an official reply this time. Perhaps that's the confirmation they needed to prior to publishing the article.

That's....I just....

You do realize that very high-end gaming PC's playing the most visually demanding stuff only get up over 3 gigs of RAM usage if they're running multiple displays at high resolutions, right? And the PS4 won't be pushing multiple displays.

Having 5.5 gigs of GDDR5 available is still a huge coup for any gaming console. The mid-field gpu in the PS4 is going to show its age long before the video memory becomes an issue.

That's what I am waiting on. Seems odd they jumped at this when a statement was supposedly coming from Sony. Now, if they're wrong about this...

PS3 reserves more memory for its OS features than Xbox 360 does.

IMO, lots of things is not finalized now and things could change.

2.5GB for OS
1gb for cache [used by both, OS has priority]
4.5 for games

Im hoping for gradual reduction of OS partition size, same as with PSP/PS3. OS partition needs to be 1GB smaller.

How much ram does the WiiU OS allocate ?
I heard it is slow as hell. Any Nintendo fans willing to gloat ?!

WiiU has a 2GB unified ram pool, 1GB is claimed by the OS. However, its slowness has nothing to do with the OS ram size.

I have to be sure there's something to be worth getting disappointed about here. Plus if the OS is suddenly using an insane amount of RAM, what are we getting in that exchange? 15 mins is not a good excuse and wouldn't explain that massive RAM usage.

Looks like everybody is rolling with around 50% reserved RAM this time. I'm going to guess none of the 3 wanted to be caught with their pants down re: post-launch featuresets. Sony had to give up on features for PS3 due to a lack of available RAM.

From a programmer perspective, it sounds like we were very close to a more interesting situation RAM wise, if Sony had gone with 4GB total.

This thread is moving too fast for me to be able to find it, but, has *anyone* asked someone yet? Has Eurogamer asked Sony? Anyone here ask someone (Sony or dev who's working on a PS4 game) on Twitter?

Do we really still have only one source on this? How has no one said anything yet?

Anybody feel this is reactionary to MS? Like, hey they're using 3gigs of memory for the OS, maybe we could do the same and nobody would mind?
