FRIDAYTON MK II: 5.5 million bears and salmon create unholy allliance to sack SONY HQ

This is what probably happened. Sonys OS runs fine on .5 gb of ram, they get wind of MS with 8gb and 3gb for the OS, they double their RAM and increase the OS footprint to compete feature wise with MS and give devs some extra ram to work with.

Why is every OS taking up so much RAM now? The PS3 and 360 OSes barely use any RAM and they work well enough.

My biggest issue is this. I have no problem with 5.5gb free. That is plenty. I have a big problem with 2.5gb of OS bloat. It screams of reserving space for functions I dont care about.

I want something small, responsive and slick. No realtime app switch, No media apps. Ill even live without recording and streaming footage. I want powerful hardware for the sole purpose of playing games. If I wanted an all in one device, id build a HTPC or use a tablet.

If this is true count me out day one. I will still buy a PS4, but at a much lower price.

Of the 2.5 confirmed reserved for the OS, 1.0 of that is probably "backup" for possible future enhancements. Sony got bit in the ass with not having enough to spare on PS3, and not being able to implement cross-game-chat... we only got cross-game-text.

Oh, Brad.

Yup.

So I just tweeted to Geis and this is what he responded.

LOL
Reposting this because then this is true:
Gies is also alleged in his recent twitter posts that DF knew about the 8GB way before anyone.

To me there are two conclusions: DF didn't and Gies is lying. DF knew and failed to report on a credible rumor, so they failed their readers.

They post all kinds of random bullshit without doing any checking, so why not the 8GB RAM increase?

These buddy-buddies in the games industry don't even understand the implications of their statements.

Ermm... Edge reported the 8GB of RAM, NOT DigitalFoundry. Are they stupid?

http://www.edge-online.com/news/playstation-4-revealed/2/

Yeah, I challenged him on that. Over a week after Edge published that Digital Foundry did a Durango vs Orbis spec comparison article in which they were pretty emphatic about the PS4 only having 4GB. And in their post reveal spec analysis article Leadbetter described the 8GB of GDDR5 as a "pleasant surprise". Arthur maintains Digital Foundry had an independent source and just didn't publish.

Firstly the difference between PS2 and Xbox was very significant.

Secondly having 50% more GPU compute cores is still quite significant.

Still, no one in their right mind could state that the PS4, with the same CPU, 50% better GPU, and nearly the same RAM allotment (though faster) would offer 2-3x the theoretical performance increase like we saw in 2001.

WOW! NeoGAF never disappoints :) However, 5 GB is still enough, not what intended first, not fulfilling SonyGAF's dreams, but still enough for excellent games :) Like 1 GB is enough for excellent games.

Who knows? With that much fast RAM available, though, I could imagine things being ultra snappy. Constantly have the most commonly used applications loaded in the memory so you can boot them up instantaneously. It should make for a vastly superior user experience than on the 360 or PS3.

Come the fuck on.
If GDDR5 helped OS speed then why does Xbox use DDR3? Along with all PCs? cos it makes no technical sense to.

Its a limitation of current dev kits, its the only thing that makes the slightest sense. Sony would keep their mouths shut until the better kits come out and shitty sites like DF couldn't spin it into an anti-ps4 story.
Hopefully this gives them cause to finally clarify.

I guess I don't really get what on earth they'd be doing that justifies claiming so much of the system's resources.
Off the top of my head, it seems like a move to secure the ability to add functionality. I also expect a good degree of multitasking,

Going by Sonys current trend of developer input, it's probably the empirically agreed amount.

Though seriously, people jumping to the conclusion of OS bloat or whatever, at least wait till people can actually test it.

So if aegis is so sure why hasn't he published the story on polygon yet?

and email all his friends @ microsoft and say LOOK WHAT I DID ? :) !! Do you guys like my story lol, so when are you hiring?

I'd say there are quite a few who are pissed at this, but the vast majority just seems to be baffled at the decision of doubling down on the ram to make game development easier and then use almost all of it on the OS. Seems kind of a weird decision.

Fair enough. The way I see it, if it's not because of the dev kits as suggested already, it could simply be that the OS is performing a lot of tasks which would otherwise need to be built in by devs themselves, like recording movies and social features. Some of that stuff is probably optional depending on the game, hence the "1GB of flexible memory" comments.

It should be pretty interesting to see where this goes either way, I don't have a horse in this race but I love a bit of drama.

I'm just gonna let Gaf ride this out.. the hysteria is distracting me from tasks I need to complete today.

My input though, there is more RAM available to developers than what has ever been on consoles before, and the potential for freeing up more space is very real.

If people are actually upset at this news, in light of the overall value proposition that the PS4 is offering, not sure what can be said to change that.

One thing is sure. Both Xbone and PS4 will be outdated crap in 3 years....which is probably a good thing because I want 5 year cycle back.

Compared to mid range PCs specs are already ok, in 3 years those consoles better be 129 usd or something like that. Old tech is old tech. If they needed that much for OS. Why didn't they put separate 4gb for it and boosted price 50 bucks? In the long run it would be a big winner.

Don't get me wrong I believe they need that much ram for OS ans apps but if they knew that, why did they waited? why did they originally go with 4gb?
It seems like they honestly didn't know what they needed up to a few months ago. imo

We should keep in mind that multi-platform titles probably would not have used more than 5GB in the first place, because it's harder to utilize additional RAM. This is not the case with bandwidth and processor power.

It's not even news yet. Until it's confirmed, it's just speculation. That's the crazy part.
